  • Showground Curse Lifted Against Nix

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers cemented their hold on 6th place & the last final series place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix, for a first win at the Sydney Showground.

Wellington looked like they were still in the warmup early in the game, and the Wanderers took advantage for Nico Martinez to open the scoring. Scott Neville & Mitch Nichols kept the ball alive with a back & forth, Neville had to slide in with a challenge, fortunately it rolled across the penalty area to Martinez who shot first time on his right foot sending the ball into the bottom corner.

The visitors had a decent half hour following the goal but they copped a goal from Wanderers legend Brendon Santalab. Nichols broke down the left wing, strode in towards goal before providing Santalab with a simple pass at the edge of the penalty area. Santalab cut the ball back on his left foot then blasted his shot through the hands of Moss for.

After half-time Santalab had his brace, and became the Wanderers outright leading scorer, Jack Clisby's cross to the far post was found by Martinez, he took a touch then lofted the ball back into the 6 yard box, Santalab attacked the ball, slamming a header for the Wanderers 3rd goal.

Gui Finkler gave Wellington a glimmer of hope with a 76th minute free kick, Aspro was lucky not to have given away a penalty with another example of holding at a set piece, Finkler didn't need to be on the penalty spot, beaten Janjetovic with his sublime technique. The two goal deficit proved too much, as Wellington's effort fizzled out without making too much trouble for the Wanderers defence.

Western Sydney face Melbourne City in a key match as they head into the final series, and will need a comprehensive victory to give their supporters real hope that they can go all the way to the Grand Final.

Pheonix look out they are losing players for the Jets game then the rest is against teams in the top 5. I think the Jets would be the biggest threat

A point up at the Jets in a few weeks would be sufficient for us, they will have to beat us and all the pressure will be on them, 6 points ahead and our goal diff is better than theirs also I think which at this stage of the season can be like an extra point.

Should be a good game up at Newcastle on 1st April, I think the Jets will come at us and will be a very open game, which would suit the Jets more.

Newcastle look cooked so it needs to our 3 points just before we play Melb Victory at full strength.

We need a follow up 3 points this week against Vi$ion City who got their Brandan sympathy emotions out. Plus no Cahill so less aerial threat.

Call me harsh but I don't completely buy into this 'schoolnight' excuse. Far more educational than some of the crap on TV at similar times and kids do need to get out !! I see that at whatever time we play there are excuses....schoolnight....too late....too hot...Friday traffic.....even Saturday nights finish late and there's all those hooligans around !! It's not just us as all A League clubs are suffering similarly. Admittedly Spotless is the pits but fortunately there's plenty of noise from the stalwarts who turn up. It does piss me off however that games always start 10-15 minutes later than the advertised time.

Depends on the kid and the family. I'll happily give you my 14-month old when he's had minimal sleep and out of routine ;)

Now the weather has cooled off, the later kick offs aren't needed. They're just to please Foxtel so they can get more live content across all of their channels. The NRL and AFL, even though they have their own channels, have priority. Then we'll have the Supercars and F1 (which bring in higher viewing numbers than the A-League) into the mix.

Can see why families are put off though. For many getting to SOP is another 30+ minutes of travel (depending on circumstances). Game finishes around 9PM, home could be anywhere from 10PM-Midnight. Kids need routine as much as sleep. Now, if you say "we're going to only a few home games that have a late kick off", you're going to select the marquee fixtures (i.e. derbies). Also, they're usually on a Saturday, kids can catch up on sleep on Sundays.

Do you discuss refereeing decisions with your 14 month old at half time? :P

He's usually in bed, so no. Mrs Gazmon has to take the brunt of my whinging and whining. ;)

The only part I was disappointed with was the RBB's refusal to celebrate the goalscorers name. I know I didn't hear it. Other than that they put in a good effort. If there is a problem with the club, that shouldn't be a part of it. Glad to finally get a win at soulless. That is all.

Refusal? You make this sound like the RBB is protesting the club.

In reality, we couldn't hear the announcer at all. I think I may have heard the announcer a bit for the 3rd goal but they always do it too early anyway when everyone is still celebrating.

So we just sang Santa's personal song instead.

I couldn't hear the announcer either and I was upstairs at the other end. To be honest I was so far away from the action I thought that Santa had scored the first one and not Martinez !!

It's almost like the whole team lifts when Dimas isn't playing.

Fair game he's welcomed a new child into his family, but it was a blessing for the team IMO.

Baccus and Antonis have to stick and start next season and Nico needs money thrown at him to stay.

Another great 90 mins in the RBB even if we were in lower capacity, much fun and big win.

Can't hear anything when you're making a whole lot of noise :xnod:

Only watching the replay do you hear it.

When Dimas plays and the play goes via him we look hesitant, look backwards or side ways instead of forwards, everything slows down to a walking place and a cheap turnover in a dangerous area often occurs.

Dimas is a better player than he has shown this season, the ability remains, just lost his way it seems, and his dead ball hitting is just ******* atrocious.

The Baccus/Antonis combination is currently giving us what we had with Dimas/Andreu last season (until Andreu faded). We're probably a better chance of securing Antonis next year than Martinez but getting both would be a great start.

Hi All Happy here again :)

Ya know I am so happy about the win on Sunday night , I am happy that those that turned up 7800 of us ,maybe 7750 I think there were about 50 at the most of the mob from Bondi over in the corner.

But what I was really happy about was the way we won that game so here is my thoughts but I think it might be close to Popa's thoughts also.

So We had a game on Wednesday night we had an 11 hour flight home Thursday night but we did have a good rest leading up to that in the previous week.

We through on the best team we can put on the park and , right boys lets go after them hard for 20 minutes and see what we can achieve, if we get a lead then lets sit back and leave Santa on the halfway line ,(don't overwork him)and see if we can get them on the break , and lets exploit there wide areas.

We can do this all day with our quality at the back and Baccus and Antonis helping out Jumpie and Nichols you pick up the middle of the park and move the ball quickly to the wings as clisby and Neville come through from the back.

If we can do this we can let them wear themselves out with possession and we look after yourself and attack quick and hard on the break.

Well if popa was thinking this as a plan he is a legend and I think he was !!!!!

    I am Happy

What kind of sheltered life would be led if you don't even know your kebab order? It should be tattooed onto your chest.

How can you even call them a friend?

Unless there are religious/allergy/moral issues, what justification is there? Small town, sheltered existance, fear of wrapped bread?

    WTF is wrong with people?

It's a close call that needs to be constantly evaluated.

I thought there was a tick box on the membership application that said:

In application for Western Sydney Wanderers membership, you are required to have completed at least one of the following:

    • Beef kebab
    • Chicken kebab
    • Mix kebab
    • Halal Snack Pack

Must have slipped through the cracks.

As far as I know, I've never had a kebab in my life. Based on recent posts, what I thought was a kebab isn't so I don't even know what a kebab is.

    Pops.....seriously :nono:

    :P

To be honest, I have Edinburgh down as a bloke who goes out and shoots his own rabbits and believes war time rationing is still all the go  :D  ;)  :P Maybe a bit of bread and dripping as a bed time treat, or a bit of liver or tripe....

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
