Simon Cox Flop In The Box Costs Wanderers In Melbourne

    mack

Melbourne City and the Western Sydney Wanderers drew 1-1 tonight in a scrappy contest where Tate Russell was involved at both ends of the park and where Simon Cox should have won the game late on as he failed to finish off an open net tap-in.

The Wanderers started well, taking the lead in the 21st minute. Mitch Duke started the move with a raking cross field ball to Tate Russell, the fullback's first time touch found Nicolai Muller, who took one touch then played Russel into the penalty area. Russell set himself for a strike, and he found the near post open, beating Tom Glover with a shot that was low enough to avoid being palmed away but high enough to prevent the keeper saving with the legs.

Melbourne City equalised 10 minutes later from the penalty spot. Russell in the action again, after a deflection forced a good save from Lopar, the young fullback was second to the ball against Craig Noone who tapped it around then fell to the ground dramatically after a very soft collision. Jamie Maclaren took the penalty, blasting it low and down the middle as Lopar dived to his left, unable to stop the shot.

Simon Cox should have won the game late in the 2nd half. Melbourne City's defenders got in an awful mess, with Curtis Good being played a hospital backpass that bounced in an awkward fashion, Curtis Good made a mess of his headed backpass, letting Cox pounce on the loose ball and nutmeg the keeper, who managed to slow down the shot with a slight deflection off the inside of his leg.

As the ball rolled toward the line it looked certain that Cox would complete the job, instead he inexplicably failed to knock the ball home, allowing Good to recover with a slide tackle that kept the ball from crossing the line. It was an abysmal, lazy failure from an expensive marquee striker, and one that cost his team from securing all three points.

City seemed content to take the draw, with neither team making much from the remaining 20 minutes of the match with it ending in 1-1 draw. The 1 point was hardly helpful for either team, as Sydney FC remain 10 points clear of Melbourne City at the top of the ladder while the Wanderers remain 2 points out of the top 6 with Adelaide & Western United fighting it out for the last finals berth.

Assuming that the A-League continues under the Coronavirus pandemic, the Wanderers will "host" the final Sydney Derby of the season in a behind closed doors contest scheduled for Saturday Match 21st.

That was the worst match I have watched this season. Standard was appalling from both sides.

The Cox miss completely sums up our season, and indeed, the past 4 seasons. Absolutely no desire to poke a given away. Absolutely unforgivable miss. The desire and intent from our players is non existent. Another 2 points pissed away. Do these players, besides Duke, even give a shite about the passion of us fans and the desire and love we have for us who pride ourselves about being Westies?

I think not. They are shaming us, not making us proud.

I'm hanging in there and will continue to do so, but geez, I'm so sick of the rubbish that continues to be dished up week after week.

Marcus was right. Our league is rubbish, and his former team continues to prove him right.

Wow again. That'll go down in one of those video compilations laughing at the A-League.

    And so it ******* should.

Played ok in the second half otherwise though

We've played ok in lots of 2nd halves. Not getting the points and still being purely shite is the issue.

    You're our Mr Glass-Half-Full, WB.

Sad to see you so upset.  :grouphug:

<sigh> I think we deserve better than some of the players apathy. I thought Muller was not interested today. Walked a lot of the game and never chased, expected the perfect ball at his feet.

Tate Russell though worked all game. I’m happy for his great goal. And I thought the new boy Carluccio tried hard ( turns out I went to school with his dad, :)).

Cox, well I thought he was feisty but what a brain snap to miss that goal.

He was very humble and quite sweet in his interview post game, repeatedly referring to himself as one of "the young boys", and celebrating that some of them are getting better for being given chances to play.

Easy to lose sight of the fact that a number of them are actually just that.

Was hoping for “Cox Blocked” as a thread title but “Cox Flop in the Box” is inspired.

I think Mack borrowed that from me. See match day thread.  Coincidence maybe, but that's OK.

    Geez that was dire

Just got back to the hotel from the stadium. What a dire match.

How City are second beats me.

Kate didn’t have a great game, I think.

The whole game just went down the gutter and everyone just was not up for it.

To have 4 of our starters out, playing City with their seagulls, I thought it was a big improvement from last week. The young kid did well.

Russell didn't have a great first half but scored a exceptional team goal. The second half was a big improvement from Tate.

I couldn’t be more angry with Simon...

However if we look at this in perspective, we grabbed a point against second place missing 4 starters.

    Okay, next week

    What a soft cox

Shwegler got his 9th yellow, right? So he misses next game or does he have to get 10?

8th yellow so he's suspended for the Derby if it goes ahead. Really stupid card to get as well.

Ah, I didn't know you only had to get 8.

Our goal was amazing. The young kids showed potential. For a game of Football a lot of the ball wasn't played with the feet. Inept play is contagious. We're gunner get smashed next Derby. We're at a rebuilding stage. New coach new players new stadium. We've kinda been in that zone since Papa Popa and Chairman Gorman left.

Last weeks result compounds this result but still ok with the draw this team is 2nd and we are 8th.

Russell I am a massive fan of his and yet again showed what he is capable of with his goal. We always complain about technique in Aus players but this guy has it in spades every touch that he made for that goal was incredible. However he still has tendency to shut off and do some weird passes. The penalty and first 5 mins of the game are examples of this. I think this all comes down to inconsistent game time for him. Which raises the question should we have Kamau at RWB or push him forward and have Russell in the starting 11?

You are kidding yourself if that was the worst match you have seen this season, we have played much worse, opposition have played much worse, there has been much worse footballing standard than that.  Tthere was some pretty good stuff played by both teams.  Go watch it again without the atmosphere of a funeral, the drab commentary from Theo and whoever the other one was (**** knows how they a gig in the commentary box, they makes the Kiwi duo sound like Martin Tyler and Jon Champion), the referee was also appalling and she struggles doing W League games so **** knows how she gets a gig in the A League beside the fact she suits the FFA agenda.  The players and teams themselves werent too bad. You do realise City are in 2nd coming off a dominant win over in Perth, we had 2 kids making their HAL debut, Tass who hasnt started for months, Russel with his 2nd statrt, O'Dougherty just back after a year off, no Bacchus, DG, Kamau, Yeboah or Zielgler (whom regardless of quality they were actually in our starting XI).  Go bring in a quarter of the team from the youth team of any A League Club, tell them to play firsts away against a team in form on second place and see what happens.  The actual fact that second half we had real chances to win the game ()and should of) speaks volumes for these young guys.

I know a lot of you here don't like Russel but IMO he's one of the best prospects in all of the HAL. He's way more skillful than Grant but the mullet gets regular/all game time. Do the same with Tass and Tate and watch them flourish in the space of 1 year beyond baby Baccus levels.

A shining light last seaon in a relatively poor squad I thought. You can make the same case for Grozos and Adam as well. As junior squad members is it up to them to rescue senior players and their f-ups.?

It was a great pass from Russell  to Duke that won us the derby.

I thought the worst match this season was the WSW v Brisbane 0 - 0 early in the season...absolute turgid dogshyte.

    • So....it's 8.15. I've been up since 4.46 - because I went to bed about 10 - exhausted.  I'm showered, and breakfasted, I sent off 7 emails before 6AM this morning, and am about to start a Team meeting with colleagues. I do want my old life back, but I fully appreciate that I am so much more fortunate than so many others around the world at this time.   Hope you home schoolers …. and others... all have a happy day!
