  • Sotirio Secures 1st WSW Win In 2019

    mack

A comfortable 2-0 win with goals from Tarek Elrich and Jaushua Sotirio for the Western Sydney Wanderers has condemned the Central Coast Mariners to a nearly inevitable wooden spoon, and seen the Wanderers head back up the A-League ladder after their clash at Homebush tonight.

Oriol Riera 15 minutes in had a free header inside the penalty area that he nodded down strongly, Mariners keeper Ben Kennedy going down smartly to save on his left. That header became the best chance of the half for either team until the opening goal. There was precious little goal mouth action, neither side showing any major amount of intensity, class on the ball was non-existent, the Mariners couldn't convert their corners and the Wanderers attackers weren't putting in good runs.

Despite the lack of quality & intensity, the Wanderers broke the deadlock as stoppage time began. Tarek Elrich took a throw in 35 yards from goal on the left sideline, was given the ball back by Kamau then took a touch before launching a speculative cross deep into the 6 yard box, neither Riera or Sotirio could get on the end of the ball, both Mariners central defenders were taken out of the play by the attacking runs, and Ben Kennedy could only watch as the ball bounced off the far post and nestled into the back of the net.

The teams trotted off for half-time seemingly nonplussed by the scoreline, the home fans mild cheers reverberated softly around the ground. If ever a dismal game deserved a dismal goal, this was it.

Matthew Millar had a good chance in the 55th minute, a failure to clear the ball by Vedran Janjetovic results in Connor Pain getting the ball in the penalty area, he chipped the ball over the top for Millar, but his jumping strike bounced off the turf and was palmed away by Janjetovic.

The Wanderers took a death grip on the game after the second drinks break in the 75th minute, the play resumed and Western Sydney were on the attack, Roly Bonevacia striding down the left flank, cutting in toward the middle then piercing the Mariners defensive line with a perfect through ball. Jaushua Sotirio, the clear man of the match for the evening cemented his good game by bursting onto the ball and passing it around the onrushing Kennedy into the side netting for a 2-0 lead.

That second goal broke the spirt of the Mariners, the game petered to it's conclusion, and the main talking point for the Wanderers will be a groin injury suffered early on by Kwame Yeboah. The Mariners were awful as per usual this season, and the home side will need to lift their quality if they are going to win more games before the season is over. Western Sydney head to Adelaide for their match on Saturday night.

Sotirio reminds me of that kid that everyone had in their U6 team who used to play football on a Saturday and League on a Sunday. Two left feet but he’d just run all day, go in hard and put in an absolute shift haha. His effort off the ball is clearly what managers keep seeing in him.

Am I the only one that still cringes when Sotirio scores because it means he'll get more game time?

No you're not. What makes it worse is that he just scores against crap opposition then it is all praise!

I haven’t seen anyone praise him. He played a good game, I won’t rag on a bloke who put on a good performance for the red and black.

My comment previously was to give some context about his final product in comparison to our other wingers.

I say credit where credit is due. Sotirio is no superstar but he gives 100% and if anything has improved this season. If a young player improves and gives it his all then he deserves the credit. Who knows where he will ultimately end up with his career and as for scoring against the bottom teams, our Million dollar striker, doesn't seem able to!

I am thinking next season will be a breakout year Josh Sotirio , I think we are starting to see a him showing some good crosses. Babel has him working hard on crosses and 1 on 1's.

I am also thinking if the news is correct on Risdon we should not see him starting a game again this year , lets let Russell develop and build his strength and use risdon late in games until Russell can put in a full shift.

I am also thinking If we could get Ziegler back on the park and line up Tass Mour(you know who) beside him and don't give Hamill anymore games and show him the door in June.

Sorry but giving 100% as your main quality to me does not make you an asset to the team. If they put me in the line up for the next game I will give 100% too but will be as useless as **** as I don't have the ability! Sotirio is not at A League standard which is the issue I have always had with this player. You can probably interchage him with any of the NPL wingers at present and will probably have the same impact. I look at the bigger picture and the fact that the club has to rely on players of this standard shows a flawed recruitment program.

And please... yes, argue with me about his technical ability or usefulness in the team but don't bring up "giving 100%" as his main quality because that shouldn't be relevant in the top competition in Australia.

Does anyone else see shades ofMbappe in Jaushua Sotirio? Just putting it out there (Ducks for cover!).

And people don't see the amount of work he does defensively, constantly chasing down player.

    King Jaush.....

    - works his arse off every minute no matter how we are going or who is managing

    - never complains even when he is in and out of the side.

    - seems to actually care if we win or lose.

    - hasn't told the fans to 'shut the **** up'

This puts him ahead of 90% of the current squad.

I thought his goal celebration was ordinary under the circumstances.

Yeah how can you get your own fan club if you’re not racing off to celebrate for 5 minutes with the RBB even though you’ve been called offside?

A bit hard to do that on Saturday

That’s an enormous straw man. No one ever said he was quality or an asset. We congratulated a bloke on having a good game.

Putting in effort absolutely counts in any league. But sure, let’s invite back Saba and Pio.

Sotirio is quality and an asset. he will finish his wsw career (many, many years from now of course) in the highest echelon of players that include the likes of Ono, Spiranovic and Mark Bridge.

Am I the only one that thinks Sitirio should convert to a LB or RB? He's defensive work rate and ability is far better than his attacking. He's got a strong build, speed and ability to track runs; he'd make a fairly decent defender imo.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
