  • Stone Cole Stunner Salvages Point After Topor-Stanley Shocker

    mack

A 69th minute set piece stunner from Shannon Cole gave Western Sydney a sniff of a title winning goal, but they were unable to put a 2nd past a 10 man Sydney FC who had taken the lead in the 34th minute when a pass from Nikolai Topor-Stanley went horribly wrong and fell to the feet of Del Piero who put away his 13th goal of the season.

Western Sydney knew that a win would see them lift the A-League Premiers Plate at their home ground with their local rivals watching on. Their task was hampered by a long list of absent players. Against a full strength Sydney FC squad, the Wanderers had Captain Michael Beauchamp suffer a late withdrawal due to injury, Youssouf Hersi out suspended, Aaron Mooy unable to recover from a knee injury picked up last week, Jerome Polenz several weeks away from recovery for his quad strain & goalkeeper Jerrad Tyson out for three months with a fractured vertebrae.

Tiago Calvano's off the ball foul on Mark Bridge set the scene early, a bitter struggle with no quarter given or asked. A theatrical dive in the 20th minute by Ali Abbas made a meal of slight contact from Shannon Cole, and the ex-Sydney FC defender was awarded by Referee Kris Griffiths-Jones the first of an astonishing 8 Yellow (3 to Western Sydney and 5 to Sydney FC) and 2 Straight Red Cards (split 1 apiece). The free kick was taken by Del Piero, and he slammed it over the wall, forcing Covic into a double fisted palm over the crossbar.

The 34th minute saw Western Sydney go behind, a calamitous error at the back taken full toll on by Del Piero. Under no pressure Topor-Stanley turned to find his stand-in defensive partner Iacopo La Rocca only to make a horrible weak and badly directed pass that Del Piero latched onto, arrowing in on goal before shifting the ball to his left foot and striking. Ante Covic managed to get a fingertip to the ball but it wasn't enough to turn the ball away from goal.

As half-time loomed Shinji Ono lined up a long range effort that was blocked. The ball fell into the path of Mark Bridge, the Wanderers leading goalscorer and his curling first time effort on the right foot was exceptionally saved low down by Ivan Necevski with the ball trickling agonisingly around the far post.

Before the resumption of play in the second half both sides made changes. Sydney FC replaced Lucas Neill by Adam Griffiths as the Captain of the Australian National Team was unable to overcome soreness in his calf. For Western Sydney Tarek Elrich replaced Adam D'Apuzzo in what appeared to be a tactical sub. The injury worries for the Wanderers continued when Shinji Ono left the field for Labinot Haliti due to a groin strain.

The next major incident was Sydney FC losing a player, but in a manner that didn't allow them to replace the player. Brett Emerton allowed the ball to run beyond him and in his quest to regain possession Emerton's lunging studs up challenge collected Shannon Cole in the ankle, an incredibly dangerous play that could have broken the ankle or leg of the Wanderer. Griffiths-Jones had no hesitation in issuing a straight red, despite Emerton already being on a yellow.

From here Western Sydney took full control of a match that they had begun to regain the momentum of after the break. Dino Kresinger then turned that pressure into position, earning a free kick from Adam Griffiths. With Shinji Ono off the field the only set piece taker of note was Shannon Cole. It appeared that Ivan Necevski had failed to setup his wall correctly, and the poor positioning allowed Cole to curl the ball around it and past the diving keeper.

From that moment the only question to remain in this match would be if Western Sydney could score the goal that would secure the Premiership, or if Sydney FC could possibly secure their finals campaign on the counter. Necevski nearly allowed Dino Kresinger or Labinot Haliti to score that goal, when Griffiths failed to clear a ball with Necevski looming large, it rebounded off the keeper and the Wanderers were unlucky that it fell to a spot that neither Haliti or Kresinger could capitalise, Sydney FC managing to block and clear the ball away.

With 5 minutes to play it was Cole saving a goal rather than scoring it, Yairo Yau burst past Tarek Elrich and delivered a cut back to Joel Chianese, his shot beating Covic but Cole was well placed to head the ball out of the danger zone. As the 90 minutes ended, Cole had chance to become the hero with another set piece, this time however the wall was correctly placed and it did the job by stopping the shot.

With the initial four minutes of injury time extended by blatant time-wasting from Calvano, Western Sydney's hopes of securing the Premiership died when La Rocca was dismissed. As La Rocca attempted to dribble the ball forward Terry Antonis dragged him by the shirt, La Rocca then appeared to lash out with an elbow at the Sydney FC midfielder. Despite awarding a foul to Western Sydney, La Rocca was sent for the field. La Rocca's hands fell to his face, he apologised to Antonis & then Wanderers manager Tony Popovic before leaving the field. It killed what little time remained and the game soon ended 1-1.

For the Western Sydney Wanderers the 1 point enables them to secure the premiership with a draw or victory over Newcastle Jets in the final round even if Central Coast win both their match against Adelaide on Sunday and their final match of the season.

The Wanderers next match is against the Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium, Newcastle, on Good Friday Public Holiday, the 29th of March at 5:30pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

I agree Dino tries hard but its not enough. With business end of the season coming I think Popa killed Haliti by benching him tonight, Popa has done great but what he did to Haliti was totaly wrong and I bet after the game if he could go back in time he would have started Haliti

Agree 100% with this. Good to see Haliti getting a rousing reception as he warmed up along the touchline though.

Good post Zola. But surely some of that system includes him finishing off the many chances created for him

I dont rate Haliti for example but ATLEAST he can finish off. Dino unfortunately... :(

Fair call. I was thinking we'd could certainly do with someone like Babalj. Tall, strong, good technique and he actually scores :).

CCM to draw and we win the title so Popa can play a youth team next week and give players 2 weeks to recover from injuries. (Other than Polenz and La Rocca who I think we won't see again this season).

Cole's goal was class. Better then what Mooy has showed this season, that's for sure.

The missed players were definately really really missed. Elrich looked good on the field and Visconte not so bad either. Kubi looked out if his depth and we needed something more from Dino today.

Frustrating game. Well done to the boys who have 100%. Depleted line up too with potentially more injuries.

Don't forget guys we ha a double whammy. We not only were playing without our attacking thrust down the right, we ha also lost our defensive steel down the right (the combination play) and centre of defence, though I thought we held up pretty well.

I don't know how Sydneu manage to ass results. If it wasn't or a Topor Stanley mistake I couldn't really seethem scoring.

Somehow tey manage to draw or even win - even though they don't deserve too.

I would be more worries as a ESFC fan then a Wanderers fan. We with regulars out we still played with structure and purpose, even though our attack was blunted.

Did anybody else enjoy the little Dino vs ADP battle in midfield sometime in the 2nd half?

Dino was just reminding him whose name gets called out every game by 5k fans :)

Dino had a great game. Looked very sharp.

WTF?? What game wre you watching??? Dino...he has to go

    couldnt have said it better

You boys have lost the plot. You give me the frightful impression of having a cookie-cutter understanding of the manner in which we play. Let's take this slowly.

We play a direct, high tempo(ish) brand of football emphasizing the consistent application of pressure to force a turnover. Popa has employed a 4-2-3-1 system with Dino as our pivot, bringing our midfielders into the game following a direct ball.

Yes, Dino play has been technically deficient in many aspects of his play - runs, finishing, etc.

You will therefore note that tonight, Dino made effective runs, harassed Sydney's defence as appropriate, won most headers, and held up the ball well.

Dont Agree take the number 9 of his back, that just crap dont have time to go on. One goal all season is not good enough doesnt matter how technical you want to be with this post

Also Liverpool played the same way under Raffa same system but Torres who was number 9 scored more then 20 goals

Mate, I'm not doubting Dino's crapness as a player. I'm arguing as to his effectiveness in our system (when he looks like he can be bothered)

Dino just can't score. He got a lot of chances last night just couldn't deliver.

I really enjoyed the night and to start off the entertainment with the song " I Am Australian" was for me superb.

"We are one, but we are many and from all the lands on earth we come " that's certainly the Wanderers faithful !!

The game was exciting with end to end play, Topor's mistake was forgiven by everyone straight away as the guy has been a rock in defence and has saved the team more than once this season.

Jason Trifiro played a great game coming into the Midfield, he looked sharp from his first touch.

Sydney FC came prepared and their roughhouse tactics especially Emerton's two tackles were obvious Farina had a win at all cost Instruction plan.

I thought the atmosphere and the noise went up a level last night, seeing the southern part of the West stand and the South end doing the call respond

"Who do we sing for" was brilliant to see.

Good luck to Adelaide today !!

The cove were probably singing their Victory diss chant to the tune of 'we are one'. Great to see the RBB do it.

I thought we did a great Job on the park considering the players we had out

I do t think anyone can begrudge Topor Stanley. The guy has been a rock in defence. For the one mistake he has made, how many goals has he saved.

    We all make mistakes.

Ps - anyone catch the brilliant bit of flare management by one security guard? Not the brightest spark. They got the flare, put it in te red box, CLOSED THE LID, then poured sand over the closed box

So if CCM get anything less than a win against Adelaide, we win the Premiers Plate?

Dino chased him past the half way line before ADP dropped the shoulder twice to send poor Dino in a spin.

ADP was brilliant last night and I'm very happy I got to see the Juventus master live, the guy is poor class.

I had to laugh when he came over to take a corner kick and started to smile when the guys by the corner flag were giving him a nice welcome...ha ha

DIsagree, we were a good chance of  winning before Emmo's brain snap. If he stays on the pitch I would have been confident of the win. Silly challenge to make and he was rightly sent.

Great atmosphere at the game, Rhyan Grant was great for us but Necevski's inability to set up the wall properly cost us the goal. Wall was shaped for a left footer, should have been set up on the other side, so the side Shannon scored from was where Necevski was standing. Not sure if he would have saved it in the end, was a great free kick but it's just a simple error like that, that can cost you the game.

    Agree with all of this.

Trifiro I thought too was excellent and also Mark Bridge in attack was the only player for us who had some real penetration and composure.

Looks like Ono is gone for a few weeks and we also lose La Rocca too now and I don't think Polenz will be available next week. Hersi comes back into the team next week and hopefully Mooy is available. If the Mariners win this week it's going to be tense next week. We going to need more supporters in Newcastle than there were in Gosford to get the lads over the line.

We were the better side, but if you don't take your chances that's what will happen. Esfc had one good chance from our mistake, we were just unlucky it fell to the one player in their team you don't want to give an inch to.

I thought trifiro was good. He plays so much better if he has a poljak/la rocco beside him. I don't think a mooy/trifiro would work, you'd need to play one of them further forward and the other alongside one of the their two.

Kubi doesn't have the knowledge/nous that hersi has. With the way grant defended I think hersi would have ripped him a new one last night. Hopefully as he gets more experience that side of his game will improve.

Wanderers had started to boss the game after half-time even before Emmo's red card. Sydney have no structure and rely too heavily on ADP to provide a spark or aimless long balls. Even with 10 men they still had 2 players going for the same ball.

think our midfield lacked some real penetration especially when shinji went off

trifiro did well overall but is not going to unlock defences

with all the players out the structure did suffer

cole played better on the left after the switch at half time

unfortunately give ADP one chance and he will 9/10 finish it.......if it went to any of the other smurfs 9/10 they wouldnt have scored

Emerton....scoring goals in the EPL to keep blackburn alive to absolute rubbish haha

Despite the amount of players that were missing from the line up, I thought we did alright against a full strength ESFC. The players that stepped in gave it their all, I have no complaints.

Hersi, Polenz, Mooy, Beauchamp missing from the start. D'Apuzzo, Shinji going off and we still had chances to win it. There was a hardworking sense of urgency from the rest of the players which they have made their trademark.

We can still win the league on Sunday.

Tonight showed the fantastic depth we have. Sydney FC at full strength and going all out to just make the finals; for us to hold them to a draw, let alone the fact that it was a come back draw mind you, was a super effort. I'm still not happy with the lack of finishing.

Was it Tiago who Bridge was giving it to for Wasting time?

Great second half performance from the boys. Quite dissapointed that we couldnt nick it but then again i predicted a 1-1 anyway. 11 games undefeated and top of the table WANDERERS BE PROUD.

having said that i have a lot of grievances from last night..

Thank god we finally decide to let someone who is dubbed a 'free kick specialist' take a free kick and duuuuueerhhhhhhh what happens? He svores a stunner. When hes on the pitch he cole should be taking them FULL STOP!

Dino for his lack of ability is a great addition for us. He was immense in holding up the ball and winning 90% of the headers. Yes he doesnt score enough and yes popa shouldve started Haliti but the man does the job he clearly is set up to do anf that in our system is be the disruptive force against the defence. why else would popa play him? For his goal scoring prowess?

I have been calling for weeks for elrich and visconte to get a chance and they looked great when coming on. Rocky is a solid LEFT footed player and you limit his effectiveness playing him on the right.

RBB pregame march was OUTSTANDING and the atmosphere electric but wtf happened during the game? There was NO PROPER cohesion at times and the chants seems sloppy and disorganised. Look over at the smurfs and they do their job in perfect unison while dickheads in our RBB were more focused on disrupting the game and causing trouble

HOW FKNIG STUPID ARE SOME OF YOU? why are you allowing projectiles to be thrown onto the field? We got warnings, we got sanctions and ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU. The club is bigger than your egos grow up. Those who do this stupid stuff should be stomped the fk out.

If you are going to rip flare and gas canisters KEEP THEM IN THE FKNING CROWD AND FOCUS ON GETTING OUR CHANTS BACK TO THE WAY THEY CAN BE. Rather than sounding like a drunken mob.

I know ill probably get chastized for some of this stuff but i bleed black and red through and through and you better believe that some of this tuff is really getting old and fkning stupid.

    UP THE MIGHTY WANDERERS

Popa made his first major errors as a manager, and they are pretty significant/obvious ones as well. He is still a very raw manager himself, so he will be learning as much as his players will be.

You don't bench an in-form confidence player like Haliti when they are scoring. Kubi or Dino, doesn't matter which, but Haliti needed to start.

You don't play a raw talent in a Derby, in such an important game. You pick solid, experienced players. How often did you see Park Ji Sung for United playing important matches? All the time. Why? Because he was defensively solid, had a level head and his output could be relied on. Cole, Elrich, Haliti, one of those three should've started in his place.

We were still unlucky not to win the match after half-time, we took complete control of the match and Sydney FC parked the bus after the red card, relying on long balls to Yau once he came on, and the usual "Pass it to the Italian" stuff.

La Rocca's brain snap is going to cost us midfield and central defensive depth until the end of the season. If one of the Poljak/Mooy/Ono triumvirate is out we'll have Trifiro and then probably Perkatis on the bench (at least we'll have 5 on the bench for finals) simply because we don't have any other midfielders. It also destroys any depth we have at CB position. If NTS or Beauchamp are out, we will be playing someone out of position.

esfc played a dirty rough game to slow us down id say,but if we had all four guys on the field we would have probably won it.

dino is frustrating, but its a team performance that makes us on top of the league not individuals like adp who make esfc competitive his foot work is amazing and only a one of mistake from topoor cost us which happens sometimes

so no bagging rights against the smurfs i guess, even on the way to train station chants were equal.was esfc singing that (man)united chant?

anyway go adelaide win or draw and we can rest our injured guys next week and field both haliti and dino with hersi mooy combo should be an option with rocky to get another go so we can chant rocky rocky rocky.kubi has some poor defensive issues which esfc looked to target.

anyone see the guy with the big afro body painted wsw in the grandstand lol

the march was epic today they must block the streets for us for semi-final as we seem to block it off anyway

the players gave it there all and am proud of them, you could tell they were dejected to end up with a draw is better than a lose to those smurfs

coles goal was sweet for a back, was thinking he was going for a dino cross hit then surprised me with that

love the atmosphere of the ground need to have big crowds like that every week then we will get a stadium or have members only watching the game in a few years time to kill the flogs who go to start trouble

Good tight game last night. I thought we did alright considering how many changes popa had to make, the non regulars stepped up to the plate and I think they should be very proud of the result.

The atmosphere was incredible, everything a derby should be. I was disappointed to see so many flares but more disappointed they came from within the RBB bays.

All in all a great night despite what channel 9 reports. Disgusting bias.

Okay, after yesterday's epic (and hats off to everyone at the Woolie...loved the atmosphere) for me this was one of those games that was all about character, heart, giving it a red hot go with backs to the wall etc. I suspect many WSW folk like me were deeply concerned about the lack of Hersi, Polenz and Mooy...then to compound things we lost Beauchamp before the game and had D'Apuzzo and Ono subbed before 60 mins. To come away with a draw against a near full strength ESFC who were playing like the true hackers they are, well what a brilliant effort. Ok, NTS had a brain explosion but when you consider his season well no one would feel too hard done by for one howler. And considering how our defence was rock solid with mostly 3 of our regular back 4 out for most of the game, well we did a fking fine job.

As for the attack, it was obvious that the lack of cohesion from having an almost entirely new team didn't help. Appiah Kubi was good but he needs to get some bulk and some awareness to develop further...he was like a mini-Hersi at times but he doesn't have the physique to hold back the stronger challenges and/or the awareness to find that piercing pass. Bridge could've been just that little bit better, and as for Dino...seriously who does he have to root for a goal. I'm not going to continually bitch and moan about him like some do nor will I go all dewy eyed and stiff-groined (hello Balkanite) over DK...he just seems to have either thrown a black cat through a glass ladder or something else has got him under its curse cause the poor bastard can't take a trick.

If we win the championship this year a lot of praise must go to the odds-and-sods guys who got us a much deserved draw, and it could've been a win if the gods had smiled. And Shannon...have a word to Aaron and Shinji on taking the frees laddie...awesome work!

    • We need an attacking midfielder that we can get excited about. As well as a striker that can score 12 or more goals.
    • So sick of all of this discussion. Just give me 11 loyal guys who want to put in for the jersey, and what will be will be. If one of them is good enough for Europe then we replace with another who wants to put in.
    • Younis in those 45 minute finally showed me how good he can be. He hadn't really showed it this season. But then its hard when Milanovic and Brook are the main starters. I think mid season Rudan was favouring Badolato who I am still not 100% on. However Pierias is taking up a spot. If you have Sapsford and Younis then no need for Pierias is there. If we were to recruit next season I would be looking at a CB, LB, a Dm and AM.
