  • Suncorp Surface Overshadows Draw

    mack

Dimas Delgado's free kick rubbed out a Corey Brown opener to see the Brisbane Roar & Western Sydney Wanderers share a point each on a dreadful playing surface in Brisbane tonight.

The first half was marred by the utterly dreadful pitch offered up by Suncorp stadium. Following yet another idiotically booked concert, the pitch was split between areas of new turf that hadn't had time to stitch together, and pockmarked dead grass holed beyond what would be considered acceptable in semi-pro football let alone a top flight competition.

Brisbane Roar took the lead shortly after the second half resumption through fullback Corey Brown. Thomas Broich was allowed to step back onto his left foot and he delivered a cross into the path of the onrushing Brown, who had been let run at goal by a ball watching Jumpei Kusukami smashed the ball home with his left foot to open the scoring. Jerrad Tyson, who had an otherwise sterling game, would be somewhat disappointed at having let the goal come at his near post, albeit one that was so powerful that it might not have been stoppable at all.

Tony Popovic rung the changes on the hour mark, pushing Brendon Santalab, Kearyn Baccus & Nico Martinez on in search of an equaliser. It finally came in the 68th minute, as Dimas defied his previous form on the dead ball. Santalab had been cut down on the edge of the area, Dimas the Captain stepped up for the free kick, hitting it over the wall and baffling Michael Theo in the Roar goal with the shot across the face of goal.

Neither team could find a winner, and the point for the visitors was marred by a late straight red card to Santalab, after getting in a tangle with known diver Jade North, and the assistant referee decided it was worth a red card for Santalab.

With Lachlan Scott ineffective as the starting striker, and Kerem Bulut having apparently already left the country, it will leave Tony Popovic with an interesting choice up front for the Wanderers next match.

I'm going to be negative, heads up... but anyone else think Theo was keeping like a Sunday league GK for the free kick. Don't get me wrong, Dimas hit it well, but that should never go in. Theo was on the same side as his wall, why put a wall up at all?

And Sotirio.... I'll stop commenting on him but since Hersi, Bridge and Nico, we only have 1 of them. The top teams benches look far better than our 11 wingers.

Did anyone else notice Santa's run across Theo's vision as the ball sailed through? If planned, a very smartly worked free kick.

It was a good goal. If you can't give credit for a free kick like that then I think you are way too pessimistic. It was also a great team goal with Nico jinking to the right side and putting the defence in two minds. Maybe something worked on at training. Another thing is that the free kick was always looking like it was going in Theo's top left hand corner. Any keeper would have been taking a step or two in that direction because that is where players usually hit it. But Dimas did a great job of making it swerve and dip in the other direction.

If Messi or Ronaldinho scored it you would be wetting yourself.

Not really, that Ronaldinho freekick at the world cup had Seaman error written all over it.

Maybe I'm just too much of a Bozza fan on his keeper calls lol.

Question is, if Redmayne did the same thing how many here would be blaming him for the 2 points dropped?

But the call on Santa run in front of keepers vision, I'll pay that. Theo did see it really late and did looked rehearsed.

Was going to say same thing...Santa's run was a factor for sure...

...no wonder they had to get him off before he ruined everything  :ninja:

I look forward to the rest of the year people giving "what if Redmayne did it?" hypotheticals. Even when the keeper from the other team makes a mistake. People seem to be infatuated with the guy.

If Redmayne was in goal he would have been roasted but that doesn't mean it was a bad free kick, just that people like roasting Redmayne.

No. It's just that people can see that Redmayne lacks in the basics of goal keeping. Where he positions himself. How he comes out of his area. His indecision. His communication with the defence. It's like you can see an error is going to happen, then it happens.. You then know why it happened. Because he was doing so many things wrong in the first place. The error is just releasing the frustration.

Was not impressed with Scott tonight. Very lazy in defense and he let Nichols do all the pressing. If that was his brief from Popa, so be it, but it didn't look good as far as this mug punter was concerned

Don't know if you have ever been in Brisbane at this time of year but it is incredibly difficult to play in high humidity & usually pretty hot too. The guy was working his socks off as much as possible & you can see the difference compared to someone like Nichols who made Scott look like he was standing still

The fact scott is actually in the side is down to Bulut. Had Bulut & Santa combo worked out you might see Scott get the odd run off the bench in the last 10 or a start against CCM or Newcastle. With Bulut not working, Scott has become a mainstay & too much pressure on such a young kid to carry the attack.

Spent the first 20-odd years of my life in Brisbane. I'm very familiar with the climate, and last night was reasonably mild, and no more hot or humid than Parramatta this time of year. It was quite nice in the stadium once the sun dropped.

My view on Scott's lack of press is based on more than just last night, and I don't see the same level of activity from him now that was evident in the FFA cup for example. But, you know, no two people see the one game the same way.

I think too much hope is being pinned on a young kid still learning his craft. I sure hope they sign an experienced striker in January, for Scott's sake.

Apologies if this has been already posted, but on the subject of the Suncorp playing surface I read this today:

“Testing today again confirmed hardness, smoothness of ball roll, traction and bounce all within acceptable levels,†Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham said in defence of the surface.

Some of the people running our stadiums still nave no 'kin idea...makes my blood boil !!

    Seriously, is he for real?

    What a douche bag.

Perfect for a game of rugby league or union. Majority of times for that type of game grass coverage or quality is irrelevant. I can see why they are mystified at all the complaints. Clearly the general manager of Suncorp didn't watch the game as he'd see that his comments don't reflect what actually happened on the field.

Poor roar clearly have little influence at suncorp. Such a shame that stadium ownership is a pipe dream for A-League sides & football will be always be second best. They pay a premium for stadium hire & deserve so much better.

    Link to comment

The Suncorp GM is just trying to convince himself. What is the objective, quantifiable measure they have to classify that pitch acceptable? My guess is that it was green and that's about it.

I don't care about what impact it had on play, what really annoys me is the lack of pride in its presentation. Could you imagine if a surface like that was rolled out in Europe or America? Firstly it would never happen to begin with and secondly, if it somehow did, heads would roll. Big time. Half the field looked like a bloody swamp and you could tell they'd tried spraying it to at least look like grass.

As has been mentioned regarding Brisbane getting taken to the cleaners with rent, that's the other thing that pisses me off. They pay all this money and every year without fail this happens around the same time.

I understand that our stadia in Australia is all multi purpose venues as much as I am against it. If they can't manage to hold multiple events without impacting one another though, then the processes and scheduling need to be reviewed or the rent should be made cheaper both in general and during busy period for certain tenants. It's not good enough.

Roar have zero bargaining power so they're stuck in this situation. I assume they don't get a discount when the pitch is a potato field because it isn't in their agreement with stadium management. If they ask to put it in the agreement the answer would be a definitive "no, and if you don't like it go somewhere else".

The Roar might have no bargaining power, but this is where the FFA could step in and show their value if they want to quash the desires of the clubs to go independent.

A bit of a discussion with the Qld government, using the positive stories about expansion, along the lines of "we have x teams who are willing and able to join the league now and they have a better model than the Roar, one of the reasons being a much better stadium deal. Get with the program or we'll just start another team somewhere else... again".

Essentially, it's a semi-bluff to get them to come to the party. I say semi-bluff because you don't want to lose the Roar but you have to be willing to make tough business decisions if other parties are making it hard for you to turn a profit. If the Qld gov know that the FFA will never dump the Roar, then they won't give an inch. But if the FFA are actually willing to walk away, or start a separate team somewhere else in Qld / greater Brisbane, then they might see some action. And if Qld government calls the bluff, then you make it public - they are charging $200k per game and making Roar unsustainable.

Everything I'e said might be totally pie in the sky but I doubt anyone's got any faith in Gallop to help out in situations like this. I know a couple of people who run small businesses who if they got given a **** deal like the one the Roar has, they'd say "righto then, F you, we're out of here" and you'd 100% believe them. No-one would believe Gallop in that situation, he's such a wet paper bag.

Theres an assumption that the FFA are a competent organisation that can get things done

Depends on what is written into the agreement between the stadium and the Roar.

I assume the stadium own all the cards. If there is a stipulation that the pitch has to be of a certain standard then the Roar can say in this instance, it wasn't, and therefore we aren't paying the hire charges.

There's too much of a monopoly going on with stadiums in this country, it's dodgy AF for the most part. This is yet another argument in favour of private stadium ownership.

That's the thing, corporate mong-man from stadium management said it passed all the 'tests'. No issue as far as their concerned.

lol I said when we signed him (here and on ATB) that Jumpei was a nobody and is just a flashy Sotirio with no end product.

Was a squaddie at best in the J-League and was signed on the cheap to fill that +1 for ACL. A very uninspiring signing from day dot.

Everyone was fapping over him in the opening weeks because why? He made a few dribbles but had no assists or goals. Members even voted him player of the month ffs over someone like Santa who scored 80% of our goals that month.

Against Brisbane he tried to dribble through the entire midfield and lost the ball every single time. More frustrating than Castelen.

Splash the cash and get Honda here. There are better solid J-League players available than this nobody. There are youth players that can step up and take half our Visa spots imo.

Visa spots are supposed to offer better than what is available locally. If they are on par or only slightly better, I'd rather a local youth player be given the chance to grow in the role.

Tyson put in a Redmayne performance tonight. In the first half he came out to collect a corner and completely missed it, then in the second half he dropped a ball straight to the feet of a roar player. In between all that he made some excellent saves.

That's pretty much a perfect description of how Redmayne plays, impressive shot stopping with a disaster thrown in.

Yet all anyone wants to talk about is how good Tyson was......

Redmayne did the exact same thing against Melbourne City last season. Setup the wall, then got beaten on his side of the goal because he shuffled across the other way anticipating having to make a save.
