  • Tepid Draw Kills Home Final Hopes

    mack

A lack of penetration against a 10 man Victory outfit saw the Wanderers take an unhappy point and kill their home final hopes.

The game reached no substantial heights, as the Wanderers stayed well on top of Melbourne Victory, who were reduced to trying to break on the counter. The Wanderers best chances came from Victory mistakes as they played out from the back, but Nichols, Jumpei & Santalab lacked composure in the final third.

Victory were reduced to 10 men early in the second half, as Daniel Georgievski was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after 53 minutes for a stupid leaping tackle on Scott Neville. Although the defender got a piece of the ball, the tackle was lunge and he took a lot more of Neville than he did of the ball.

There were only 3 shots on target in the entire 90 minutes. From both sides combined.

The draw means the Wanderers have no chance of hosting a home final. The final round of the season will see if the Wanderers will travel to Brisbane or Melbourne City.

The final game of the season is in Adelaide next weekend.

Cops/FFA/Club wanted our active support (ie WST) far away from the few dozen Victory fans. Even though they had more police than Victory fans.

So move them into the White and Black members area, since when is that an active support area.???

I'm all for the noise but I chose my membership so my family weren't in the middle of it... The drums were given all of us the sh!ts...

Main reason was that the drums from WST just produced noise, no beat or rhythm. Would have been much better without them

I thought victory defended superbly in fairness to them. It was a study in how to defend a man short. We weren't great but we never looked like getting beat. I'd fancy us against any of these mobs in the finals and I didn't think that 2 months ago.

Yep, if you watched them closely... they got back in numbers, so many players behind the ball... it wasnt parking the bus per say but they were defending in numbers and their defence was very well organised, even after Georgevski send off

I thought the turnout was poor tbh. 16K on a fantastic day, big opponent, last home game. If we have 20,000 members it means only 6,000 actually turned up as the POX was 10,000 by kick off.  Obviously that is assuming everyone who bought a ticket tuned up but still the number of our members who actually show to games (and yes I realise not all 20k are ticketed members) is nothing short of shocking.

I suspected that might be the case after the last Sydney FC game

    this

Although it's easier to lose people than it is to get them back.

Our crap start and sop being a hole has killed a lot of the atmosphere.. so people don't go.. leads to lack of atmosphere.. so people don't go.. vicious circle

How dead was it compared to parra game last year. Anz is a total atmosphere suck

It's a pale imitation of what it was at parra

Some real ****wits in the RBB tonight as well as on the pitch.

    What happened this time ?

Nah just a couple of ****wits, some big dude was bellowing out his own versions of chants out of tune towards the end and another kid who seems to have been watching too much Green Street Hooligans trying to start **** with people (including some 14 year old kid).

    RBB was great regardless though.

That killer striker we didn't recruit this season would have been handy during the last 35'. Overall starting to look solid in midfield.

Exactly. There was even one where Jumpy curled the shot and it would have went in but sheer numbers behind the ball saw it bounce off the back of the defenders head I reckon.

Muscat would have been well satisfied with that defensive performance for sure.

Cannot put this draw in the same category as some of the other draws earlier this year. Some of our forward play was half decent at times.

Victory will be a tough nut to crack if they defend like that in the finals.

They got a kick up the arse after the nix performance and it showed.

Game 1: 0-3 VAR would have been handy

    Game 2: 0-3

    Game 3: 0-0

An improvement in this game with Muscat doing an Arnie and parking the bus with all 11 Victory players defending for fear life.

That said western Sydney born Thomas had a good game.

Entertaining but utterly frustrating tonight. Victory down a man so we bring on the big guns of dimas and lustica! Wtf. Geez, if rumours are true we are going miss some real key players next season.

Yeah, those substitutes showed the lack of depth on our bench

Our mids were more or less substandard, which was definitely key. Antonis possibly played his least effective game in our colours last night, and Butters was energetic with no real product. I thought Jumpei had a decent game, but again he too didn't really amount to much. The end result was with those three no doing enough Santa didn't really get the service he needed. Also Clisby was off beam with a lot of his crosses, and Nev was quiet.

When Lustica and Dimas came on you could tell Popa was thinking 'ACL in a few days...'.

Snakey Jan was only really tested a couple of times (forget that offside goal) and Cornflakes & Aspro were very solid at the back (though neither did much to help turn defence into attack).

Victory were well structured with a distinct hint of dirty karnts. Georgevski got what he deserved (and as for his move to Newcastle they've bought a dog IMO)

I thought Jumpei was pretty good last night. Yeah he can't finish but we knew that already. He beat his man consistently, earned us a few dangerous free-kicks, and looked fit for the 90 minutes which is rare for him.

Nico was brilliant, of course he should've finished that chance, and that's a weakness in his game, but the chances of getting a player who's as good at him at everything else AND can finish are next to none.

Having players like Antonis and Vedran has an exponential effect (I would also add Santa to that). It makes players around them like Cornflakes, Aspro, Clisby, Nico, Nichols etc improve their game. Then you have young guys like Baccus, Sotirio and Scott coming up. These players improve playing alongside better players. Therefore it is not just Antonis and Vedran making the team better, but also these other players improving because of the effect the new players have had.

That is why at the beginning of the season we were equal with the CCM's, Newcastle's and Wellington's, and getting thumped by Sydney and Melbourne. Now we are thumping those lower teams, and having tight contests with the likes of Sydney and Melbourne. Just imagine we currently also had Bridgey in the squad..

There is no way 10k non-members bought tickets to the game. POX includes stadium members (of which only a small petcentage would have shown, as most have the Stadium membership for other sports). I'd suggest about 10-12k of our membership showed up - which still should be higher mind due.

agree I didn't mean to say it's only those two that carry us. although in the case of vedran we just couldn't afford the individual errors redmayne and Tyson made. On top of that whole defence is much more stable.

Antonis has been excellent of late

Those around them have lifted hugely, and I don't think it's coincidence that it has happened since Antonis started playing

Victory spent 35 minutes with 8 men in the box and we probed from all angles, maybe we could have done better but in the last 15 minutes they camped 9 men in their penalty box and made it near on impossible to get through them.

28 shots on goal 12 blocked says it all.

I would recommend to everybody to watch the replay study the system Muscat put in place after the send off before we criticise the performance

I'm no expert...but these posts say it all.

It's a huge cliche, but you can only play as well as your opponent allows you to play, and their defense called the shots (hahaha...well stopped the shots...that were heading anywhere near target that is).

It was a frustrating game...but a decent night out.

I think we need to give credit on how Melbourne defended. When we had chances they threw themselves to block the ball.

The big chance funnily enough happened when they had 11 on the pitch in the first half. Nico with that 1-1 should have finished that chance. For our finals i am hoping for a Melbourne trip away preferable over Brisbane

Oh that....just a few pissed Balkanites. They were behind me and I told the bigger one to shut up or move and they stopped...just the grog. There was far more intrigue inside the area going on for most of us to bother with them. The singular departure at match end said it all. Mack's right insofar as WST seating. Otherwise the RBB remains a work in fluid development. We just ain't what we were and the shite venues aren't helping. We seem to come to life on the away trips. Thanks Happy for your sunny disposition match critique. You read the game whilst I just thought we'd become the morphine of the A League.

Totally agree. If Nico finished like a Mertens for example he'd be...well...he would be here. God I'd love us to have another (i.e. Santa) bulldog forward like him.
