  • Tiki Taka Gets Gombau Nada

    mack

Adelaide crashed out of the Premiership race after going down to 10 men and conceding twice to lose 2-1 to a Mark Bridge inspired Western Sydney Wanderers.

Adelaide United opened the scoring a minute from half-time, neat interplay between Tarek Elrich & Cameron Watson produced a rolling ball across the top of the box that Sergio Cirio smashed a first time shot into the top right corner of Ante Covic's goal.

The game changed on the hour mark as a result of a determined run by Mateo Poljak. The Wanderers defensive midfielder stormed past a trio of Adelaide midfielders, then sliced their last line of defence apart with a pinpoint through ball for Bridge. The all time highest goal-scorer for Western Sydney was playing in his 200th A-League match and his well timed run caught Nigel Boogard off guard, the central defender hacking down Bridge from behind for a clear penalty and after consultation with the linesman, a red card. Juric made no mistake with the spot kick to put the Wanderers level and with the man advantage.

Bridge marked his milestone with the matchwinner in the 73rd minute. Juric won a free kick on the left wing, although his attempt at a power drive from a Takahagi lay-off hit an onrushing defender, the bounce favoured Takahagi, allowing him to lob it back into the mixer. Juric helped the ball on, over the Adelaide defence. Bridge reacted first, and after one bounce he smashed a volley into the bottom corner.

All in all, Adelaide were punished for their reckless tackling, their entire outfield defensive unit accumulating a total of 5 yellow cards along with the red to Boogaard, their tiki-taka reduced to little more than passing between their defenders before humping long balls across to the other side of the field.

With one round to play, the Wanderers will play disgraced cheaters Perth, hoping to match or better the result of fellow cellar dwellers Newcastle, who play away against Brisbane Roar.

The Wanderers next match is against Kashima Antlers in the Asian Champions League, on Tuesday the 21st of April.

So raining on gameday seems to be the usual now,

we just need it to rain after the game for us to win, what's the forecast for Tuesday??

    13 degrees at kick off

    6-20mm at 80%

    Winds 35-50km/h

    13 degrees and 35-50km/h winds???

    gonna be freaking freezing..

I always wanted to go and experience the Old Firm. Looks like I won't have to go Scotland after all.

Seriously though it sucks it won't be warmer. Having Kashima play us early in their season on a warm day in parra would've been a nice advantage for us

Good win loved watching Adelaide implode. I don't think we can play juric and bulut together

I always get frustrated at how we lose a lot of those 50/50 balls and give away cheap free kicks close to goal (even with 10 v 11). Some of the gifts given to Adelaide at the end by Tanaka and Trifiro was woeful. With the advantage we had they shouldn't have had so many chances to equalise.

Also Bulut and Bridge appear to me to be the only players who really know how to score goals. I really don't have a lot of faith in the others.

I think that's why having Santa on the sideline most of the season hurt us so badly

FFA screwed up the draw this season and pushed the GF date back a week. The AFL booked in matches all 3 nights at Eithad and Saturday/Sunday at the MCG.

FFA don't want to play at AAMI Park because it won't make enough money for the FFA.

    They'll just charge more money,

they charged a fortune for people in Perth to watch Australia play Bangledesh...

I had two poofters stand next to me in bay 57 tonight, contributing nothing, standing like statues spending the whole game drinking red wine. WTF. I was embarrassed. Go and support Sydney FC with that sort of carry on.

Also, that crowd figure was complete bullshit. Where the **** are they pulling these numbers from? There was at least double figures there tonight.

My theory is since pirtek stadium is run by the NSW government, lower attendance numbers = less chance of upgrade.

I dont understand why people get so exited about bulut. Maybe because of his tatoos

No, as far as I could see most people stayed to the end....  :ninja:

Punctuation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :good:  :good:  :xnod:  :clapping:  :woah:  :woah::good:  :cheeky:

loved how our first goal was just us running straight through the middle. Great play by Mateo to make the goal and then a good run by Bridge. Sometimes we just need to do something different as Mateo did tonight.

I think we are a much more dangerous team when we play a more direct style. That first goal is an example. Straight through the middle and then a through ball to lead to the penalty. Second goal was also a though ball up the middle.

Even in the past we have always played best when we have got it quickly to our frontman through the middle, and then have the winger and attacking mids coming in from behind to pick up any scraps. Crosses or slow build ups seem to be an absolute waste of time for us.

As does throw ins, corners or any other dead ball situation... :smurfnono:

It seems to be across the league, not confined just to us. There's at least one questionable attendance figure each round.

To be perfectly honest though, it's not just us. Most of the set pieces and dead ball situations in the aleague are sub par and result in little to nothing.

Corners are always painful to watch.  When Adelaide took theirs they always looked very dangerous.  All season whenever we took ours it was as if a group of our players wandered into their box, someone hoofs the ball somewhere towards the direction of the box from the corner and players in box realise a ball is headed in their direction and bump aimlessly off the players around them until either ball goes out having totally missed said box or keeper catches ball.

It's because 99% of the balls delivered into the box are slow, looping crosses that give the keep all the advantage cause they're so easy to catch. Drill it in low and hard at head height and with the pace, it turns into a pin ball machine and even the faintest of touches can be dangerous and unpredictable.

In the off season there are worse ways they could spend money than hiring someone in from overseas for a few weeks as a dead ball specialist coach.  For a team with so many tall players we should be monstering teams in dead ball situations.  Instead I can't recall a single situation we were remotely threatening.

The biggest issue that we've had at conceding corners for the last few months is that teams are now targeting us. One issue is that despite having some of the tallest players in the league we never clear the ball first time & the second issue is that neither of our goal keepers command the box or come out to catch the ball directly off a corner. Opposition sides have picked up on this & have started doing the following:

    - Inswinging corners (as opposed to outswingers which seems to be the latest trend), not many teams have had accurate enough corners for this to be truly effective (Mooy being one of the players we've played against that has the most accurate/deadly set pieces)

    - Placing 4-6 attackers directly infront & around our goalkeepers giving them absolutely no room to move. Add in the fact that you've got just as many defenders in there plus a couple of defenders marking zonally, there are up to 10-14 players surrounding the goal keeper within a few metres vicinity.

The issue this creates is that there is already some uncertainty regarding our keepers ability to command his box, but the extra pressure of so many bodies in the way means that he stays back on the line & hopes the defenders can do the job for him. Even if the ball is hit right at the keepers, they've got no choice but to punch it!

In attacking set pieces and corners, our biggest issue is the delivery. All season this has been a problem but never in our three seasons of our existence have we ever been prolific from the dead balls situation. Part of the problem is the fact that none of our taller players are that good at getting good power/direction in attacking headers but the biggest problem, especially this season has been the delivery into the box. The amount of wasted balls that can't even clear the first man or has just been knocked into the mix without being in the vincinity of our attacking players is just not good enough. Our record from corners is so poor, I wonder why we bother anymore, just go short & look to recycle posession as we will have a better opportunity of actually scoring a goal!

Great win obviously..........particularly after the first half rubbish

    - Cop that Adelaide - your number #7 (Sanchez?) carried on like a pork chop in every yellow card. I wanted him to be sent off rather than Boogard. Complete tosser of the highest order. Karma bites after the earlier matches in the season.

    - Bulut TIFO - pointless to me. If it was directed at the club, they are hampered by something called the salary cap. And if the reports that Bulut's attitude is similar to Saba, then let him go, no matter if he scores goals.

    - No way there was less than 10K............the Eels would post that as a crowd of 12-13K easily.

    - Mateo was very good. That yellow he got was a joke

    - Memo to the Adelaide United supporters there - you need one chant that "U-nite-ed'............your team is boring and so are your supporters.

Now to stay off the bottom for one more round............

The Bulut tifo was useless. Welcome to a salary cap league. This is the reality, the dollars that he deserves cant be met by the club even if they tried. Get rid of the cap and no problem.

I can't stand that the players are aloud to get away with so much with the refs. I bloody hate it.

We all see bad decisions. We all hate on the ref.

They call it passion or the heat of the moment.

    I call bullshit.

I hate it so much, that if I was 10 years younger I'd make a strong play to become a referee boss and sort the crap the eff out.

Will copy and oaste and continue in a different thread.

Yeah baby that's a win woohoo

Have to agree with you on all counts.

The way Sanchez carried on was disgraceful he disputed all calls and urged the ref to give cards on every foul.

What is the kick up about the RBB banner?

It was just a simple attempt to try and keep our Auburn boy here where he belongs. Or was there another meaning?

Unless you're an English teacher im not sure how anyone could find another meaning in it. It looked pretty clear and concise to me what it meant...

Especially with the dollar signs, it was pretty clear the message was to the club that Bulut is worth the money so set aside a little more of the cap for him.

I certainly hope the club set aside a little more for Bulut.

Ah we played shithouse for most of the game but somehow won it. Take the win but it was ugly trying to watch us hold onto the ball. I know we don't want the spoon but will we have the energy for Tuesdays game now and popa needs to move Yojirio up the field he plays to deep and again the Bulut and Juric combo doesn't work.

4-4-2 only worked because they had a man sent off, otherwise they would have had an extra man in midfield & been even more dominant. Can only see a 4-4-2 on Tuesday in the last 15-20 minutes if we are down & are going for the win. If it's an end to end game, then I think it'd be better to have the extra midfielder & bring on a fresh forward (Juric if Bulut starts) & bring Trifiro or Baccus on the field partnering La Rocca to play Yojiro further up the field.

The truth is these statements always get thrown about as if people are insiders and know whats happening. They dont. Its all just speculation.
