  • Tomi's Dream Debut Grabs Valuable Point In Gosford

    mack

Tomi Juric made a dream debut for the Western Sydney Wanderers with a late equaliser that gave the reigning Premiers a valuable away point in their opening game of the season.

A late afternoon kick-off in Gosford saw the first half played in scorching temperatures. The Wanderers supporters travelled in large numbers yet again, with much of the stadium covered in the red & black colours that unite Western Sydney. After a period of feeling each other out it was the Wanderers with the best early chance, in the 14th minute. Mark Bridge was given acres of space on the left flank, and driving into the box he delivered a low shot at the front post. Mariners keeper Justin Pasfield stuck out a left boot to block, only to see the ball fall to the feet of Bridge who unleashed a close range effort that Pasfield blocked again. With bodies falling over each other in their attempts to clear or score, it fell for Youssouf Hersi but his shot deflected over the bar off Labinot Haliti who was lying prone on the turf.

The Wanderers were the dominant team in the first half but on attack they weren't able to find a killer ball or collected finish. Mateo Poljak took a volley snap-shot from well beyond the edge of the box that flashed just wide. Haliti in particular was unlucky, as a timely intervention from Zac Anderson took the ball away from him as he was preparing to volley the ball home. 5 minutes before half-time he skipped a glancing header just over the bar.

The second half saw the sun dip below the Bluetongue grandstand and 10 minutes after the break the Mariners scored against the run of play to take the lead. Ante Covic declined to properly clear a back pass and he turned the ball over well into the Wanderers half. The Mariners worked the ball to Flores who found Mitch Duke with a brilliant through ball that left Adam D'Apuzzo square and stranded. Duke's neat finish saw him lift the ball over the oncoming Covic.

The goal brought the Wanderers to life and Tony Popovic decided he had seen enough. The Premiership winning manager called for a double change. Tomi Juric & Shinji Ono were brought on in place of Haliti & Poljak. It had an immediate effect, the team lifted and began to reassert dominance on the match. The Juric equaliser came on the end of pace and trickery from Hersi. Polenz released the flying winger who beat his man and delivered a wicked cross into the box. Despite his marker being between him and the cross, Juric's brilliantly timed run saw him use his strength to make solid contact on the volley and power a shot home.

Western Sydney chased a winner in the final few minutes of the game, with several set pieces providing opportunity that wasn't taken. Mooy was unable to beat Pasfield from a free kick and the last chance of the game, a corner, was delivered poorly by Ono. On the face of it a draw was a solid result for a first game away from home against the team who finished 2nd in the Premiership last season. However it was clear from the reaction of the players and coaching staff that they wanted more out of the match than the solitary point.

The Wanderers next match is at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday the 20th of October, against the Wellington Phoenix. Kick-off is at 5:30PM EDST.

Better second half. Mooy looked off pace, shinji should have come on at half time.

The Hersi-Juric goal was more reiminsent of the Wanderers I have grown to support.

Good start for the season, you could tell it was first game and I think next week will see at least 2 changes to the starting line up. Mariners goal an indirect response from a (dare I say it) Covic mistake. Haliti tried his guts out but Juric looked more comfortable for the time he was on. Bridge a tad rusty. Shinji will start. Hersi a tad quiet but finished strongly. I'm happy.  :good:

Not bad, pretty good, not bad.

That is undoubtedly the loudest reaction to any goal we've ever scored. I've never yelled so hard. Broke my throat.

Very true! I'm surprised the seats held up! Maybe Allianz Stadium should investigate buying some.

Although, it also seemed to take them scoring for us to really find our voice and amp up the volume. But with Juric already now with one in the bag, hopefully he'll get another against Wellington and we'll be on our way with a striker high on confidence.

One more and he equals 'the great one'.

Actually on Dino, i yell out for fun (and a little out of frustration) at one point

"give it to Dino", a very informative bright spark replied from 4 rows back "he doesn't play for us anymore!"... Thaaaanks

I've said that about Mooy for a while now. Seems alot more comfortable at DM. Shame cos you would've thought he'd be obvious cover for Shinji.

Finally home with beer and kebab to sustain me after a marathon day. Overall pretty happy with the boys, and by rights should've been more like 3-1 our way. Cagey coaching from Popa re the starting line-up and definitely seeing different transition with no more Dino up front. NTS had a good game and Bridge & Hersi were up to old tricks lol.

If there is a better ad for the game, the A-League itself or our RBB led passion I'd say it was BS...good effort one and all.

D'Apuzzo was a bit average. Mooy seems far more suited at CM/CDM than up front. Haliti tried hard but needs to stay onside more, so often he was denying people an out by standing offside or not getting back fast enough. Poor clearance from Covic leading to the goal, probably should've just put it out if he was under pressure. First time Hersi goes down the bloody wing and he gets room to cross. Just lacking a bit of cohesion and the combinations weren't quite on today. Good run first up though.

NTS was average for mine. Was shakey in the first 20 and really needs to lift his passing game if Spiranovic gets fit.

Also what's the deal with no red? Surely that was a goal scoring chance...

Great night. Great support. Happy with the result, and once again, an over the top police presence.

Ridiculous waste of taxpayers money, again.

People really need to stop whinging about the police when it's not called for. Stadium/club is paying for the cops, not tax payers

Our noise levels really lifted once we went behind, everyone banded together to drive the team on.

It was an absorbing game to watch- after the first goal, the Mariners tried to absorb sustained pressure from us. I felt that if we had another 10 minutes at the end, we would have snatched a late winner.

Solid first game. Onwards and upwards, already looking forward to next week at Wanderland!

I think the angle was away from goal somewhat so no red but still a fan dog challenge but I guess we would want la Rocco and Poljak to do same

I sat on other side from Rbb, the support was epic. One comment mariners fans started a champions Chant a few times I'm sure it wasn't heard over the other side but I at least give them credit for trying

A direct result of wanderers active suppot

Beautiful day decent match thank **** the season is here.

Also seriously how **** was their cannon lmao 25k and its like a pellet gun

I'm not sure if anyone realized but the cops were there before kick off. When the game started they all (including security) left. As soon as a flare was let off they all came back and stood out the front again.

    Just an observation.

    Really?

Id like to see some proof that the stadium is funding 100% of "Yobo's on Patrol"

I have a feeling my Tax dollars are hard at work here =]

The dude with the cannon couldn't hear the countdown over the PA.....it's obviously not RBB proof.

Stadium/club has to provide appropriate security which includes police. My point is, in a thread about today's team performance, who cares about police presence.

Those that couldn't see the game due to 5 police officers standing in a row with one recording with a video recorder.

I didn't pay to see the Police get paid overtime for doing nothing.

I paid to see the wanderers game.

Either way a waste of Tax Payer dollars!
