Valiant Wanderers Fall Late Against Victory

    mack

Despite a vastly improved performance on a rain soaked evening, the Western Sydney Wanderers fell to a late winner to Ola Toivonen.

Late afternoon rain, thunder and lightning threatened another postponed encounter, but the dark clouds cleared quickly enough to allow play to begin on schedule. Having been widely criticised for their lack of application against Melbourne City, the Wanderers looked much better against the other half of Melbourne in the first half. Markus Babbel handed an A-League debut to fullback Tate Russell and he performed superbly on both sides of the ball.

The Wanderers had most of the chances, in the 2nd minute Bruce Kamau had the ball fall to his feet after a scramble inside the penalty area, he lashed a right footed drive at goal but Victory keeper Laurence Thomas stuck out a hand and blocked the shot. Oriol Riera found an Alexander Baumjohann cross with his head, the out of form striker nodding it wide.

As has been the curse of the Wanderers in the past few years, they failed to turn their domination into a goal, and copped one against the run of play. Mere minutes before half-time, James Troisi slipped the ball into the penalty area past Brendan Hamill, Toivonen bisected the cover defence of Ziegler and Elrich to slide the ball past Janjetovic, who once again showed his predilection for diving early and the wrong way against close range shots.

In the 70th minute, Alexander Baumjohann had a reward for an excellent game when he single-handedly won, and despatched, a penalty. He was manhandled in the box and taken to ground by fullback Storm Roux, and after a number of spot kick misses from Riera, Baumjohann took the ball and rocketed it home even with  Thomas diving the right way.

Terry Antonis tried to get Victory level with a blatant dive in the penalty area, it went unpunished by the officials and if there is any justice, he'll receive a ban from the A-League Match Review Panel.

With typical luck of a side fighting at the lower end of the table, the Wanderers copped an unlucky 2nd. James Troisi took advantage of some slow cover defence from Roly Bonevacia to get in behind the defence, he fired across the face of goal, Patrick Ziegler's desperate lunge couldn't clear the ball, and Toivonen was johnny on the spot as it rebounded into his stomach and from there into the back of the net.

Substitue Nick Fitzgerald smashed the post late on, as well as a chance after Thomas missed the ball after running out of his goal, Fitzgerlad shot from a long way out only to have it blocked by a Victory defender on the line.

The 2-1 loss would almost be considered cruel if it weren't for the amount of chances the Wanderers let slip, but they are a team in poor form and that is how football punishes teams who can't put goals away. The positives despite the loss were the introduction of Russell, who appears to be the vanguard for a new batch of Wanderers youth prospects to make their A-League debuts, and the much improved performance of the side against a better team coming off an 8 day break.

Western Sydney face Wellington Phoenix next Tuesday at 7:50 PM at the Sydney Olympic Stadium.

Great response from Elrich to the idiot that racially abused him on social media.

I'm sure there's a complaints thread somewhere on here for cats, armadillos and tall people.

Majok's first touch is so bad I'd be letting him go after his contract expires. It's one of the worst I've ever seen in the competition and it's such a vital skill. He's butchered almost every chance he's had because of it.

I take it based on Babel’s comments in the pregame Raul will struggle to get back into the squad?

To be fair..the lineman calling him offside at that vital moment was likely just to save his embarrassment.......going by previous efforts at critical moments...

I’m not specifically talking about young blood though. Up until last night, his inability to change any personnel or tactics or structure was baffling. We played 10 weeks of the same average football, getting the same results & the only move he’d make each week is to replace the 3rd & 4th subs on the bench with 2 other players likely to see 0 - 5 mins of game time.

Last night to his credit, he backed Russell, brought on his subs where they had enough time to influence the game, & they did, & he even relaxed his views that Roly can’t play CM & Fitz can’t play wing... we looked that much better for it. Despite the result it was the first time I’ve had a smile on my face watching our side for some time.

I probably am being over critical but IMO he needs to adapt to this league a lot better then he has been. Hopefully last night was the start of it.

No, you are probably just watching different games.

The only constant starters this season have been Snake, Riera, Treejack, and Hamill. We have two kids running midfield after Baccus snr left and JoD turned out to be better than Mahazi, he threw in Majok Suman and Kamau when they were ready, now Tate. Inability to change personnel looks different.

Grozos and Bridgey have been missing from the squad all season due to injury, Tokich Ziegler Tongyik and Roly for much of it for the same reason, Elrich Raul and Sotirio have been out for a few games each. Youth players were away on international duty. Who else should be sitting on the bench then?

Never mind about average football. If Riera and Roly had banged in the sitters, and the Janjetovic red card and Raul debacle had not happened we'd be second in the table.

My missus went to the bathroom at half time and got the ins and outs of the bathrooms mixed up, accidently heading towards the men’s. Before she even set foot in the little entrance way she realised she was going into the wrong one and turned around. A stadium official raced over to her and despite her apologising for her mistake and trying to have a laugh about it with him, he told her that he “saw her intent” and demanded to see her membership card. He then informed her that he had made note of her member number and threatened to ban her if she did it again. I might also add that she sits in the GA with her family so this wasn’t even with me in the RBB where you’d expect nonsense like this to happen.

She’s requested that I don’t take it further and discuss it with the club as she’s nervous now given the threat she’s had made against her despite doing nothing illegal or prohibited. No wonder people are walking away from WSW games en masse. I have no doubt she is not the only one to have put up with rubbish like this from power hungry officials.

If that isn’t proof that SOP have a major prejudice against football then I don’t know what is. I highly doubt there’d be that sort of response if the same thing happened at any other sporting code played at ANZ... makes my blood boil

They were on fire last night, suggest you read the wanderers facebook page link below (there's a heap of **** in there) but there is also two or three seperate posts (scroll down a bit) outlining pathetic behaviour last night from orange shirts just in the general stands.  I witnessed a poor bloke in his 60s get marched for sticking up for 2x20yos who were told off for yelling out 'you are s h i t ' to Broxham, poor old bloke did nothing wrong just told the silly woman saying s h i t  wasnt a crime and even the cops were embarrassed taking him but still did the pricks.  My missus took our 4yo niece to the toilet in a hurry cos she is being toilet trained (the kid  not my missus) and then this orange shirt grumpy ass woman would no tlet her through and marched her back to her seat telling her if she didnt have her membership pass she wasnt going to let her back in.  All these issues (and plenty more) were caused by the same woman if you were around 308/309/310 she was on a ******* roll last night.

what a joke. The stadium is a 90% empty and these kents are worried about your membership card and sitting in the right seat? The entire precinct can EAD.

I had the same issue getting to my seat. Although in a group of 3, and the other 2 had shown our tickets, i had to show mine. Problem was, my hands were full with chips, pie and coke. So i politely asked her to hold my pie, chips and coke whilst i very slowly, removed by wallet, looked for my pass, showed her, then very slowly put it away.

I understand that in my section (128), there is access into the private boxes, but agree that it is such a ridiculous situation when the place was so empty and it was raining anyway.

I swear they do that just to piss people off. Last season they had the canteen behind the rbb closed so they were checking people through the little gate set up to divide the different areas of the stadium, to get to the main one. As I walked through the gate I told the bloke I’d be coming back with drinks and food and asked if he could remember me, to which he said sure thing. 10 mins later I walk back and he plays dumb and asks to see my card. Wouldn’t hold anything for me either, just watched as I struggled to put everything down on the ground and get my pass out and then he didn’t even look at it properly.

Yeah I don't get whey they even bother to divide the concourse. We're getting 8k to a game and the RBB has 200 people in the entire section. What a waste of resources.

I know people have said that we may have similar issues at Wanderland 2.0. The difference is, we'll be major tenants and our complaints to the club might actually be followed up because the last thing they'd want is to have every fan disgruntled over the management of the new home.

    Was a much better performance.

Mistakes were still made but effort to win the ball straight back was much much better.

We created enough chances to win 3 games and frustratingly only managed to score the pen. Riera just HAS to put that header away.

Thought ABJ ran the game- created 3-4 clear excellent chances and buried the pen. I know others disagree but i think he is the player we should be building around for next year.

Great to see Tate Russell do so well. As i posted on match thread - as a young fella on the hill at win stadium i watched his old man play for the steelers. He was a great player and a great guy (met him a couple of times back then). Great to see those pics of dad congratulating  Tate's after the game. Sell risdon and play him every game for the rest of the year!

And Gillett deliberately avoided giving us clear fouls. Failed to give Antonis a yellow card for diving.

I can't see how anyone (including other referees) thinks he is a good referee.

That Antonis dive going completely unpunished and the constant fouls by MV without cards was ridiculous. And standard, Riera commits one foul and gets a yellow.

Was Roux booked for the penalty?, couldn't have been, was he already on a yellow?

    Why no red?

No. Gillett must have decided it was not a DOGSO.

If Treejack was heading towards goal he could have given it as a straight red if Roux was victory's player closest defender to the goal line other than the GK.

But it's Gillett and we know he hates us.

There's no chance a ref gives that a straight red for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Generally those red cards will only get given nowdays (because of the change allowing 'football tackles' to only be yellowed) for shoving a player over inside the box when they would be 1v1 with the keeper.

It really should have been a second yellow for a foul that stops a promising attack, that wasn't an attempt to play the ball.

AB was fouled in a promising attack in the middle of the field and a Vic player was given a yellow, I think it was Antonis

    Here is section from IFAB

    CAUTIONS FOR UNSPORTING BEHAVIOUR

There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour including if a player:

attempts to deceive the referee e.g. by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)

changes places with the goalkeeper during play or without the referee’s permission

commits in a reckless manner a direct free kick offence

handles the ball to interfere with or stop a promising attackcommits a foul which interferes with or stops a promising attack except where the referee awards a penalty kick for an offence which was an attempt to play the ball

denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by an offence which was an attempt to play the ball and the referee awards a penalty kick

handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal (whether or not the attempt is successful) or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal

makes unauthorised marks on the field of play

plays the ball when leaving the field of play after being given permission to leave

shows a lack of respect for the game

uses a deliberate trick to pass the ball (including from a free kick) to the goalkeeper with the head, chest, knee etc. to circumvent the Law, whether or not the goalkeeper touches the ball with the hands

verbally distracts an opponent during play or at a restart

Based on that, Roux should have got a yellow for inspiring behavior.
