    Vedran Brainfade Costs Wanderers. Again.

    mack

For the 3rd time this season Vedran Janjetovic has made a complete brain snap, this time an error in the 95th minute to gift Brisbane Roar a corner that Adam Taggart nodded home to give the Roar a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The Wanderers controlled the game for the entire first half, giving the Roar precious little to come at them with. Roly Bonevacia opened the scoring in the 18th minute, latching onto a long ball over the top of the Roar defence by Brendan Hamill. Roly picked up the ball about 12 yards out from goal, he cut back inside and fired through the legs of Luke DeVere before beating Jamie Young at the near post.

Western Sydney were cruising when Kwame Yeboah continued his good start to his career in the Red & Black. Oriol Riera found Bruce Kamau with a neat ball into the area, he tapped it back for Yeboah and the new striker turned Connor O'Toole and rippled the back of the net on the far side.

After half-time the Wanderers & Roar ambled along to what looked like an inevitable win for the visiting team, only for the 5 minutes of stoppage time to produce the dramatic ending and yet another Wanderers collapse.

Firstly the Roar saw Taggart and Tobias Mikelson play a neat one-two pass to put Mikkelsen one on one against Tate Russel, and the Danish midfielder went around and shot through the legs of Janjetovic to put the Roar within striking distance of a point.

Secondly, as the Roar launched an aimless ball into the Wanderers penalty box with 30 seconds left of injury time, all Janjetovic had to do was let it roll out for a goal kick, or smother it 8 yards out from goal and boot it up-field to give Wanderers their breakthrough 2019 win. Instead, he let it roll slowly toward the goal line before inexplicably throwing out a right foot as the ball reached the by-line.

Having won a corner off the brainless stupidity of the Wanderers keeper, the Roar threw the kitchen sink and their own keeper Jamie Young into the penalty box, followed by a ball into the 6 yard box. Young, Taggart and Tarek Elrich threw themselves at the ball, it connected with Taggart's head and the ball flew past Janjetovic for a stunning equaliser.

As the Roar ran off in celebrating the dumbstruck Wanderers had to rue the 3rd brainsnap of the season from Janjetovic, another two points dropped from a seemingly unassailable position. While Markus Babbel could only laugh in reaction after being questioned in a post-game interview, he must surely be absolutely livid internally. That 3rd mistake should mark the end of the Wanderers career for Janjetovic, who has been a disaster in goals since swapping with Andrew Redmayne.

The Wanderers now have to pick themselves up to face Newcastle on Friday, February 1st with a 7:50PM EDT kick-off at ANZ Stadium Homebush.

    Tbh I feel for Vedran.

The only problem I have with the manager is how he is setting up the defence.....we appear to not have any....lol

Seriously though what is he supposed to say. ?  It's a process,,,,it's a philosphy.....we're on the improve.....the seasons not over........etc  The fans of WSW don't want sugar coating from the manager they want the truth. They have eyes and can see what happens on the pitch and they want to know what is being done about it.

He is a straight shooter and calls it as he sees it and I'm sure he is the same way with the players. .Tbh he has inherited a club from the previous two managers who recruiting has been below par.

As for Vedran.sorry, but he is gone as far as I am concerned. One brain fade...ok mate we all make mistakes....two brain fades.....gee, c'mon mate learn from your mistakes........three brain fades......OK, now you convinced me you're a complete dill...

In a way the other two fades are easier to handle, both were poor judgement in thinking he could get the ball. This was just a lack of care

I’m not saying he can’t be critical, but I think he can be smarter in what he says to the media. He’s been this way since the pre-season & nothings changed, so maybe adjust the way you go about man management & see if there is an improvement? There is a serious confidence issue within the squad, I think there should be some form of accountability from his end for it.

He is the only manager in the comp who publicly slates his players in the media. Australia & Germany are two different countries with two different attitudes, I think he needs to adapt.

Nail ..head..there is zero leadership...no experienced head to get verbal...especially at the back. Watching Hamill and Elrich play together is just a joke..its embarrassing...

We so miss a Covic, NTS, Beauchamp, Santa..that kind of presence...not because of what they do with the ball but the impact they have on those around them..

The kids in this team are getting flogged and let down...

There is no way lederer will pay out on janjetovic's contract.

He has been a ticking time bomb his whole career - good shot stopper, appalling decision maker. These stuff ups aren't a surprise as any esfc fan would tell you.

Our fanbase loves people who yell and wave their arms a lot because they have 'passion'. (see also gombau, josep). Unfortunately its football ability and decisions that decide matches.

I couldn't believe it when we signed him, i couldn't believe it when we gave him a 5 year deal. It's a mistake that will cost us for ages because no one will take him, he won't walk away from all that money and we will be stuck with a backup keeper taking a huge slice of the cap for 4 MORE YEARS!!!!!!!

Vedran IS the leadership, all he had to do was do nothing, let it go, slow down, waste time, instead he tries to be a smart ass and gets royally ****ed conceding a corner.  Now most keepers would then go **** this, if this ball lands anywhere near this 6 yard box it is mine, what does Vedran do, stays on his line and sways his arms around like an old wog telling one final story before they walk out the rello's door.  This one is all Vedran.

Don’t disagree with any of that and lovely imagery. It’s not the first time he’s given a game away up there in the last minute

But we go from 2-0 up at half time, and all over them to hanging on. The second half performance was terrible.

The drop in quality when yeboah, and Kamau (yes Kamau) came off was shocking. Then o Doherty going off to be replaced by a 19 year old CB when we needed to calmly close a game out shows where we are at.

The whole season has been a complete write off, added that our W League team sit dead last with 1 win.

It really was a dismal end to a match that showed some promise in the first half. Yeboah was great, Roly playing to his potential for multiple weeks, Tokich looked great and I'd pick him over O'Dougherty next match (unless he is just a biscuit and out again), Kamau worked hard and Elrich fighting all match even though he is a bit of a lame duck.

Vedran, not much to left to be said. The fight and consistent tenacity shown last year is gone.

The more these types of late capitualations happen, the more nervous and tight we get defending a lead. It feeds itself and I'm not sure where we find the way out psychologically. Not helped by the quick turn arounds.

A week of training is desperately needed.

Elrich is going to be over the moon when he reads the comments on this and the "Wanderers vs Roar" threads.  Two goals scored against us and he has not been blamed for either of them.

I wonder if you would have the same confidence in the quality of your glasses had a Taggart or Bautheac goal been allowed to stand and the still frame from the VAR showed a foot as far ahead of the line as was Roly's.

When Vedran signed for us originally I thought our issues with goalkeepers would be sorted for at least near future

but unfortunately it hasn’t, especially this season he has shown he’s tenderness for stupidity in certain moments

aswell as our backline shown communication issues , lack of awareness ,

composure & lack of leadership of Hamill

The only thing good to do with our squad this season is the exposure for the young guys coming through

Tokich showed that he’s a quality prospect going forward

Gombau got sacked by the club a few days after they gave Vedran the extension. There's no way that contract was Gombau's fault. JT and co gave him that contract because he supposedly received a bunch of offers from European clubs to join at the end of that season as his contract was expiring.

I feel sorry for Elrich he’s comeback to his home club he clearly cares. But post injury he isn’t the player he was and due to our abysmal recruiting he’s playing out of position each week.

Surely that’s not on Gombau. He may have said he wanted to retain Vedran (why wouldn’t he when Vedran was playing well under him) but the details of the deal would be up to the club.

    Edit, plus what Mack said.

Fox Sports and their stupid line has been really reckless lately. They don't ever put the line in the right place, the referees group has said they don't use it for VAR because it's not properly calibrated and they've repeatedly put their line in the wrong position. Against Adelaide vs WSW they put the line in a place that made the Adelaide player look closer to onside than he actually was, and now against the Roar they've put the line in a place that made it look like Roly was clearly offside, instead of in the right place which would have made it look in line.

Which caused a massive stir on twitter, until Peacock of all people posted a better placed line and showed it wasn't anywhere near "clear and obvious".

Not to mention Meredith going on and on about linesman being "instructed to keep their flags down", when he has no clue if the linesman thought it was offside or onside (which means he'd keep the flag down anyway).

He's never been worth that sort of deal. He's an average keeper at best.

Sometimes we really lack football knowledgeable people at this club don't we?

How would you want to be Birrighitti over at Melbourne City watching Vedran and other stuff up every week knowing you can't get a gig somewhere.  I really rate him since his time at the AIS and he is still only 27.

This business of the linesman putting his flag up or not because there is VAR is total bs. If the linesman thinks it's offside put the flag up. If not, or uncertain, leave the flag down. He/she should do their job first and foremost, regardless of the VAR. If VAR proves him wrong so be it. VAR isn't there to do the linesman's job, it's there to help fix obvious errors. It is an aid, an extra tool for the officials, not a replacement.

As it is, no one knows why the flag stays down - because told not to put it up if close, or because believed not offside, or when in doubt give advantage to attacking team. If the linesmen have in fact been instructed to not put the flag up if it's close (define close and in who's opinion) then that instruction should be immediately rescinded.

As mack has stated before he is the long term replacement for Galekovic. But you wonder how long he'll be willing to wait?

When I was a (very average, park football) linesman many years ago now, we were always instructed that when in doubt, advantage should go to the attacking team. In other words, if you weren’t sure you kept your flag down. All refereeing decisions are meant to operate on that basis, assistant or otherwise. VAR doesn’t change that in my view, and I would have thought should lead to more lineball decisions giving advantage to the attacking team because at least if you get it wrong a goal is chalked off and there’s no harm. If you flag an offside that isn’t, you can’t chalk a goal on and the game suffers.

No idea if things have changed in recent years. I suspect not as the principle is still sound.
