  • Vedran Brainfade Costs Wanderers. Again.

    mack

For the 3rd time this season Vedran Janjetovic has made a complete brain snap, this time an error in the 95th minute to gift Brisbane Roar a corner that Adam Taggart nodded home to give the Roar a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The Wanderers controlled the game for the entire first half, giving the Roar precious little to come at them with. Roly Bonevacia opened the scoring in the 18th minute, latching onto a long ball over the top of the Roar defence by Brendan Hamill. Roly picked up the ball about 12 yards out from goal, he cut back inside and fired through the legs of Luke DeVere before beating Jamie Young at the near post.

Western Sydney were cruising when Kwame Yeboah continued his good start to his career in the Red & Black. Oriol Riera found Bruce Kamau with a neat ball into the area, he tapped it back for Yeboah and the new striker turned Connor O'Toole and rippled the back of the net on the far side.

After half-time the Wanderers & Roar ambled along to what looked like an inevitable win for the visiting team, only for the 5 minutes of stoppage time to produce the dramatic ending and yet another Wanderers collapse.

Firstly the Roar saw Taggart and Tobias Mikelson play a neat one-two pass to put Mikkelsen one on one against Tate Russel, and the Danish midfielder went around and shot through the legs of Janjetovic to put the Roar within striking distance of a point.

Secondly, as the Roar launched an aimless ball into the Wanderers penalty box with 30 seconds left of injury time, all Janjetovic had to do was let it roll out for a goal kick, or smother it 8 yards out from goal and boot it up-field to give Wanderers their breakthrough 2019 win. Instead, he let it roll slowly toward the goal line before inexplicably throwing out a right foot as the ball reached the by-line.

Having won a corner off the brainless stupidity of the Wanderers keeper, the Roar threw the kitchen sink and their own keeper Jamie Young into the penalty box, followed by a ball into the 6 yard box. Young, Taggart and Tarek Elrich threw themselves at the ball, it connected with Taggart's head and the ball flew past Janjetovic for a stunning equaliser.

As the Roar ran off in celebrating the dumbstruck Wanderers had to rue the 3rd brainsnap of the season from Janjetovic, another two points dropped from a seemingly unassailable position. While Markus Babbel could only laugh in reaction after being questioned in a post-game interview, he must surely be absolutely livid internally. That 3rd mistake should mark the end of the Wanderers career for Janjetovic, who has been a disaster in goals since swapping with Andrew Redmayne.

The Wanderers now have to pick themselves up to face Newcastle on Friday, February 1st with a 7:50PM EDT kick-off at ANZ Stadium Homebush.

He's never been worth that sort of deal. He's an average keeper at best.

Sometimes we really lack football knowledgeable people at this club don't we?

    This,

surely we knew Gumby was on his way out yet we give long term deal to Vedran and bring in Kamau, Fitzgerald, Tongyik and Odohery leaving new manager no room to move

other clubs have football people make those decisions

With the structure of the league the way it is (salary cap etc), I don't believe it's a wise move to sign anyone on a long term. I would not go more than 2 yrs maybe with an option for another 2 yrs. If a player get injured and doesn't recover well, or the form goes downhill you are stuck with him.

When I was a (very average, park football) linesman many years ago now, we were always instructed that when in doubt, advantage should go to the attacking team. In other words, if you weren’t sure you kept your flag down. All refereeing decisions are meant to operate on that basis, assistant or otherwise. VAR doesn’t change that in my view, and I would have thought should lead to more lineball decisions giving advantage to the attacking team because at least if you get it wrong a goal is chalked off and there’s no harm. If you flag an offside that isn’t, you can’t chalk a goal on and the game suffers.

No idea if things have changed in recent years. I suspect not as the principle is still sound.

I agree. That's sorta my point. If you're sure, act accordingly, if not act accordingly.  Just because "it's close" keep the flag down is the bs, and the commentators go on and on about it. If it's close but you're sure it's offside put the flag up. If you're not sure because it's close, or any other reason, keep the flag down. If VAR is being used review the decision.

Yes, it's unfortunate if a mistake deprives a team of an opportunity,  but as they say "that's football".

I'm fed up with commentators saying the flag should have stayed down because it's close and therefore the linesman must be unsure. Fcs! If the flag goes up it's because he's not in doubt!

I am gunna say something here :

Redmayne was an absolute DUD playing infront of the wanderers back 4 that included Hamill , or Thwaite or Cornthwaite , Clisby  cant remember the rest.

look at Redmayne the last 2 seasons infront of a good defence , no one can deny he is a very good keeper for the  smurfs.

Vedran had a pretty solid year last year, this with increasingly unsettled defence in front of him he has struggled.

There is a common factor Hamill  , he is no good, never has been and never will be  for goodness sake in the first 5 minutes last night he took an air swing at the ball when he was last line of defence and we were just lucky to have bad opposition

Fix our defensive back 4 and start by getting rid of Hamill and Vedran will be ok behind a solid defence.

    Trust me

@keithie.... You cannot blame the defense for the brain explosion/s all he had to do is let it go.

Yep........blame the defense for what followed after the brain fade. The mistake led to the corner which should never been......as you say all he had to do was let it go out....hoof it upfield from the goal kick.....game over.....but no.......we had to have lesson #126 on how to lose when your ahead 2-0 in injury time.

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy at this stage.

I’m not saying he can’t be critical, but I think he can be smarter in what he says to the media. He’s been this way since the pre-season & nothings changed, so maybe adjust the way you go about man management & see if there is an improvement? There is a serious confidence issue within the squad, I think there should be some form of accountability from his end for it.

He is the only manager in the comp who publicly slates his players in the media. Australia & Germany are two different countries with two different attitudes, I think he needs to adapt.

Nah I disagree with this wrapping them in cotton wool approach. He’s calling it like it is and says we need to improve.

Germany is a much better footballing nation than us so really, if that’s the way they do it in Germany, please do it here

It’d be nice to have players which play with fire and can handle pressure because they’ll be better for it

This is how coaching should be done....this is how I would do it, **** I love his Middlesbrough accent.....his attitude is pure Boro....'get in there, thats what I pay you for' lol will never be another like him..

I really struggle to deal with dropkicks.

He's one of very few trying to protect Davide

    •

We need Davide Del Giovine he is complete GK coach. His giving Nick Suman experience to build our future and will get Vedran back to his best in the short term. 🥇nothing wrong with our coaching staff.

My observations from the numerous training sessions I've attended, are different to your take, but hey, your entitled to your opinion. IMO, our GK stocks have struggled since Ron Corry was dumped from the position

I watched a few sessions this year as well. His getting the pipeline right with the young kids giving them experience. Vedran had his best year under Davide last season hasn’t hit his head right since contract signing. Keep the faith. 🙏

Our 2 senior keepers are at best average. I don't see any improvement forthcoming & IMO Vedran has regressed since he joined us from SFC. Redmayne on the other hand has improved considerably. All we are left with are youff & from what I see at NPL2 level they are also error prone

Bro with all due respect. Vedran was one of the top 3 gk’s in the A-League last year & won player of the year for the club. @therelbossa couldn’t stop talking about him and he knows what his talking about

Srsly, the stats don't lie! Season 16/17 under Spider, 35 goals conceded @ 1.3 goals per game, finished 6th. 17/18 season under Davide 47 goals conceded @ 1.75 goals per game, finished 7th & this season 🥁 35 goals conceded in 16 games @ 2.2 goals per game. Do you sense a trend?

Davide managing what he has been given. Vedran was good enough for the club to offer him 4 year deal last year. Suman gaining experience doing a good job. Strong group of keepers coming through academy. #cleansheets coming. 💪🏼

The current GK coach should just be the academy coach, 13s to 18s.

We should consider getting spider back for the u20s, NPL, NYL and A-League.

Our back line has also gotten progressively worse over those 3 seasons too. There’s 7 blokes responsible for stopping balls from going in the net, I’m not willing to lay blame all on one person in this situation. Redmayne was dogs balls with the likes of Alberto, Jamo, Andreu et al in front of him. Redmayne personally coughed up so many points it wasn’t funny.

Maybe the solution is a foreign keeper (see Wellington) because there isn’t many options in Australia unless we sling some cash at Mitch Langerak.

    Link to comment

Redmayne was our GK until Jan 2 2017.

In that season we only conceded 1.3 goals per game. Our goals to games ratio has increased dramatically (approx 65%) since then.

Whilst the defensive unit must be collectively held to account & whilst we have struggled in this area since Foxe left after a few rounds of 17/18 season, the GK has one primary task & that is to prevent the ball from entering our goal
