  • Vedran Hands Sydney FC Derby Win

    Vedran Janjetovic threw away the derby with a moment of madness that saw him sent off for a handball outside the box, with the Wanderers incapable of defending their early 1-0 lead, the Wanderers eventually succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at Homebush tonight.

    The match began much later than expected as a thunderstorm lashed the Sydney region and forced the match commissioner to postpone kick-off by more than half an hour. Once it was underway the Wanderers controlled the early going, and their 20 minutes of pressure paid off through Alexander Baumjohann and Oriol Riera. Baumjohann delivered a wonderful curling free kick into the penalty area, Bruce Kamau's diving header caused Andrew Redmayne to hesitate momentarily, and the ball found the feet of Riera and subsequently the back of the net.

    Riera's goal was the highlight of the game for the home side. Mere minutes later, a garbage long ball over the top caused confusion with Vedran Janjetovic deciding he needed to rush out of the area, he knocked over Ziegler his central defender, and then dived at the shot despite being well out of the area. The red card was inevitable at that point, and shortly after Baumjohann followed Vedran down the tunnel as the Wanderers attacking spark was sacrificed to bring on substitute keeper Danijel Nizic.

    Sydney FC attacked at their leisure from that point on, knowing the Wanderers had no real potency in attack, and they equalised in first half stoppage time. Josh Brillante was let run into the penalty area by Jaushua Sotirio, his shot struck the woodwork after Nizic failed to palm it away, and typically for these derby games, the rebound was perfectly placed for Alex Brosque to hammer the ball home.

    From that moment on a Sydney FC win was inevitable, and they took the advantage from a dreadfully defended corner in the 57th minute. The ball flashed through a sea of bodies until it reached De Jong at the back post who scored with his left boot.

    Sydney FC sealed the game in the 80th minute, a lofted corner to the back post was buried with the head by Jacob Tratt. Western Sydney had less than 0 in attack and wouldn't have scored in 500 minutes let alone the dozen remaining.

    Western Sydney just find new ways to give up points and wins in the A-League. Whatever Babbel is doing on the training pitch isn't being applied on the big stage, and he hasn't displayed any of the tactical nous one would expected from a manager who engineered Hertha's rise to the Budesliga in 2010/11.

    The vagaries of the A-League finals system means that the Wanderers will likely limp along with some small hope of turning around their form at the back end of the season, but the league premiership is gone already, and the season looks set to be another long slog to try and wrestle 5th or 6th spot away from the likes of Wellington, Melbourne City and Newcastle.

    The Wanderers play Adelaide United, in Adelaide, on Wednesday the 26th of December, at 7:50pm Sydney time.

    Not that it changed the result, but the linesman on the dugout side of the ground was not especially good in the 2nd half.  We were seated near our goal end and he missed a few clear offsides, including in the play leading to the corner for their 3rd goal.  He missed crosses that swerved out over the byline and curled back in and was not particularly useful on indicating infringements.

    The refereeing was not of a particularly high level for much of the game - the inconsistencies in decisions and the fact that Riera had someone constantly in his back of pulling him over and got not one free was pathetic. We don't need extra help to lose, we can manage it by ourselves quite nicely.  It all adds to the frustration.

    Ziggler was immense as well as Rizzo keeping Ninkovic in his pocket for most of the game.

    Clear errors by the match officials led to 2 goals. 

    There was clearly a ball that was out from Sydney at the northern end that was given a corner. 

    For the last goal, the smurfs should have been called offside before the corner.

    Thought exactly the same myself !!

    With all the praise for how great the RBB were last night, which I'm sure is warranted, it is mystifying how it never came through on TV. Only the Cove was heard. While I realise that its probably due to the positioning of microphones and Foxtel being worried about the Sydney FC dis chant coming through loud and clear on TV it is surprising that the RBB cannot be heard at least in background noise.

    Fox Sports did what they always do for derbies, they put a mic in front of the cove and turn the microphone up.

    It’s been said before, but my god we lack any kind of bottle. Soft as sht. Even with Vedran staying on, it’s pretty hard to imagine we would have toughed it out, and once he got sent it was curtains. So far away from how it was in the beginning. Just another gutless surrender in a long long list of gutless surrenders.

    I think had this match occurred in isolation, the mood would be less dour. 

    The boys were clearly on top. Working hard and showing good 'mentality'. Even after the send off, they had it under control. ESFC made nothing in open play and a typical clodhopping Sotirio moment let a shot on goal deflect onto Brosque's foot. 

    But to say the boys didn't work hard or try is rubbish. To say Babbel threw it away with the ABJ sub, equally so. I get the debate, but there us no certainty ABJ would have helped us keep out the goals OR fashion the 3 (or more, knowing us) chances we needed to take something from the match.

    I understand that the match is part of a long line of disappointment. Since the GF loss to Adelaide, without a home, we've been hard to support. At the same time smurfs have been nearly unstoppable. Last night should have been the one to change that, but a brain explosion from a member of a playing group who feel the immense pressure got in the way. 

    Under Babbel, we'll turn the corner. It's already apparent if you look at the right things, and his two visa recruits have been stronger than any non-marquee visa pair we've picked up. I don't think going home fixes our problems, but we aren't as far away as it feels.

    Out squad isn’t good enough, it really is that simple. We may also laugh about Babbel’s use of “Mentality” but last night showed he’s spot on we are weak

    I don't think it would have mattered who we took off after the red card, and to do something other than the obvious removal of ABJ, AND still keeping a decent formation while a man down, would have required a double sub that takes off Riera for Roly, and the formation would have been something crazy like 4311.

    And they are not worried about the western sydney dis chant?

    Sadly I’m not even convinced we would have gone on with it, if Vedran had stayed on, we just would have found a different way to stuff it up

    Was against Norway in the group stage. But yes, I thought of this exact scenario when AB10 number came up.

    Edit: to clarify for people. It was the Italian goalkeeper that got sent off for handball outside the box. So a very familiar situiation.

    Babbel did the traditional thing...but you have to take in to account the lack of quality in this team...where the engine in midfield is and could we take a hit like losing ABJ.......

    I think we were ****ed either way...regardless of who he took off...this team doesn't have the kind of fight needed to hang in there in these kinds of situations.

    This. Whatever the subsitution, the team needed to take on a siege mentality. We simply do not have it in us. And we dont have the mental strength to deal with adversity. If we come out flying, the team cam show they have the quality. But if we cop a goal they panic. And its simple, we need experience, and some winners. 2-3 of them.

    It doesn't help that, with the club's revolving door approach, the team members are still relatively new-ish to each other...compared to teams like the Victory and some others, where core players have played together/been team mates, and identified as members of THAT team for some years.

    I imagine that sort of "siege mentality" and the "mental strength to cope with adversity" strengthens season by season.

    It was so bloody annoying too - all I could hear was some f***wit on a microphone that seemed to have more audible strength than Hill & Slater commentating.

    There would be two main reasons for not mic-ing up the RBB, one is the eff off ESFC chant.....( while FOX is quite happy to allow swearing on a lot of it's shows it broadcasts the RBB swearing is a no no....not family friendly enough apparantly....lol........a lot of hypocrisy here)

    The second is we are NOT their commentators favourites so we get nothing from them .

    I saw a story about the big Championship game between Derby and Forest earlier this week. it was live on SKY and whilst most of the chanting came through loud and clear from both sets of supporters, they have some mechanism to block chants with swearing in them due to regulations. Interestingly enough the offensive chant was aimed at SKY due to fans being pissed off with KO changes to suit TV requirements.

    Yeah i would say Babbel has had a chat with him by now saying if you are happy to stay around i will build a team that can compete around you and the new stadium he seems to like as well (seeing as he would be used to playing on FIFA pro quality pitches)

      (sigh) - left it too late again to have a crack at the City defence. Too much side to side passing in the first half which invited pressure from City and gave them the space to take the shots that went in the back of the net. I'll renew my membership but have lost faith that we'll ever win a trophy

      It's no longer up to us, except that we play first before City so we can at least put the pressure on them instead of it being killed if City played first & won. If we lose or draw we're out even if City lose to Western United. If we win and City lose, we're in. If we win and City draw, we go through on the Games Won tiebreaker. If we win and City win, we're out.
