  • Wanderers Bombed By Newcastle Jets

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers chance of a top 6 berth is over, after a 5-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets tonight.

With end to end action in the first 10 minutes, Oriol Riera had the best chance of the early going. His 12th minute strike on the end of a Wanderers counter-attack came after he weaved inside Nikolai Topor-Stanley, forcing Glen Moss into a full arms length stretching save.

Newcastle opened the scoring shortly after, taking advantage of sloppy play from Brendan Hamill. The Wanderers captain woefully underhit a 10 meter pass that was intended for Roly Bonevacia, but it was intercepted half way to the intended destination. The Jets broke as Ugarkovic released Hoffman, his pass to the far side found Dimitri Petratos and he lined up a trademark left footed curling shot and that had Vedran Janjetovic beaten well and truly.

The Jets had a two goal advantage in the 22nd minute. Having worked the ball into the penalty area, a Petratos backheel found the feet of Georgevski. His shot was blocked by Tarek Elrich, the rebound fell to Hoffman, he reflexively stuck out a boot, the ball bounced into the turf and over the desperate dive of Janjetovic.

Deep into first half stoppage time Marc Tokich was judged to have taken Ronald Vargas out in the penalty area, after he reached in with his foot to kick the ball away, with some contact on both ball and player the VAR declined to step in. Roy O'Donovan stepped to the spot, and blasted it to Vedran's left, the keeper made the save but unluckily for the Wanderers it went straight back to where it came from and O'Donovan tucked home the rebound.

The second half began as the first had, with Newcastle scoring. Five minutes in, Newcastle attacked down the right flank and launched in a cross to the back post, Vedran flapped weakly at it, doing little more than dropping it to the feet of Ridenton who turned and shot through the legs of Brendan Hamill's attempted cover defence.

Tokich's nightmare of a game went from bad to worse when he gave away his second penalty of the night, for a stupid foul against Jason Hoffman. O'Donovan made no mistake and buried the penalty.

Mitch Duke came on for his Wanderers debut as his side prepared to take a corner and he made an immediate impact to give the Wanderers their first goal of the evening in the 69th minute. Tokich aimed an in-swinging corner to the near post that Duke attacked strongly, flicking it over the top of Glen Moss into the far side goal netting. The Wanderers looked better following the introduction of Duke & Sotiro, there was no further goal-mouth action for either side and after 3 minutes of stoppage time the game ended with the 5-1 scoreline. The loss puts Newcastle 8 points clear of the Wanderers, while the Wanderers will fight it out with the Roar and Mariners for the wooden spoon.

Western Sydney play the Mariners on Saturday the 8th of February at the Sydney Showground.

I mean just look at a practice that is common place today. Club players visiting sick children in hospital.

Would they visit if the cameras weren't there?

I know for a fact most of the players don't like it cos it is exploitation.

They go to a hospital and chat with poor sick Kids who have no idea who they are just so the cameras can be stuck in their face to make the news.

These players would rather be out in the community amongst fans who knoe who they are.

But that doesn't fit into the "branding" of the club.

What are actually people protesting that we have a **** football team, one that cannot perform at the level required?

What does a protest do to fix that?

    serious question by the way

Won’t fix anything but bring the attention to the owners that enough is enough. An empty stadium might make them bring real football people in to run the club. But we won’t do anything, except jump on this forum again next week and blame janjetovic, babbel, owners and co. We need to do something don’t we? Other options

I hope that the club is reading this thread as i also left at half time and had enough and won't be back at homebush.

Not good enough to put in a decent job to earn their money, feels like they don't care and you can see they know that they don't have a future here. Things must be rooted inside the club for these types of performances and I would love to know how people working there feel about the culture, as it seems like it's a corporate type work environment where the players are not passionate about playing.

Tbf, the owners do less running of the club, more financing. The person responsible for running the club is John Tsatsimas.

Owners would set the broad strategic direction for him to execute

Which for this year has been focus on youth setup, and foundations. but make do with what we have in first team, get thru season with as little damage as possible and then go to Parra.

This started with year 1 at sop when we had the chance to grow (without constraints of small stadium)

instead we chose to underinvest in playing squad by letting the GF team from year before go and replacing with bargain bin foriegn players (and no marquees) result was 60000 people showed up to see us get smashed by our neighbours and that set the tone

What a Debacle , we have lost the proud hard to beat tough as nails Western suburbs of Sydney person.

Sat through 8 goals against to 2 for last night 6 hours of our life wasted.

    Hamill is just goddam useless

    Riera is an oxygen thief.

Risdon was disgraceful if we want a winger give him the job but we need is a defender.

I could go on but .....

Geez we are in the POO :spiteful:

. Reira would be in the top 3 earners in the league

the examples for me is we are allowed two marquees but In 2 of last three seasons we only had 1

I am going to stick my neck out here and that I still have my support for Babbel.

His only fault is selecting the 11 who took the field last night and produced nothing but ****!

Babbel has fired warning shots to his senior players that if they don't perform they don't play as in the case with the game against Perf where he played our youth players. Our youht players have shown more hunger and energy than our seniors players. Our senior players cant be arsed anymore, the performances this season are proving that.

I only saw 2 players last night that gave a ****, Bruce Kamau and Roly.

Now that the NYL is over, those youth players that played for our first team, I hope they get the opportunity to show something to us that our senior players can't.

The Mariners are playing better than us and they are a good chance of getting a result against us next week if we played the same 11 as last night.

Babbel said it in the press conference, the players don't give a **** if they lose and that's just not good enough, Popa and Muscat strike fear into the players if they don't perform and Babbel hasn't shown that yet.

As for the club management, they can continue the spin about our Academy and new stadium will fix everything which **** bullshit! the fans have had enough and are voting with their feet.

Changes are badly needed and we are going into the new stadium with a **** season.

Probably the lowest of lows last night - an embarrassing night for our club.

The mood in the stadium, especially after half time, was laughable and embarrassing. The product on and off the pitch was disgusting. The club is in a dangerous position.

People talk about the crowds coming back to Parra next year; well they won't if we don't have a significant restructuring during the off-season.

The good old days feel like generations ago.

Yes while still taking our membership money in each of those three seasons

Also I think club are in for a shock come renewal time.

Plenty of people new stadium or not aren’t going to renew next year, people like seeing a winning team and we aren’t one

I'll try again, bit calmer now, first 30 min it seemed we really tried to push Llorente & Risdon up over the halfway line, yeah all good if we're scoring and dominating, but leaving Elrich & Hamill guarding the roost I was just wondering when the counters would come and the Jets worked it perfectly, they were too pacy and quick of thought for our centre halves and our full backs were too far up the pitch to do any sort of defending, when they were back it seemed they were lost in the crowd as the Jets just basically found space at will and passed and shot through the spaces, and there were spaces.....our jockeying and closing down was pretty average really.

I am not a tactical expert but I felt the defence needed to do their job first then help the midfield to attack, felt we were too attack minded and got our trousers pulled down all too quickly and did not learn and react to a change in the moment.

ah well i'll be back there next week, i'll continue to support the Western Sydney Wanderers because their my team, but cmon give me something back in return, where's your pride?

All I hear is fn mentality, mentality, mentality. Reality is it has nothing to do with a winning mentality. Mentality is the way you approach something. What we don't have is winning mindset - how we react to something (I see approach and react as two differnet things). There's loads of teams that go one down and become twice as dangerous like Victory. You just know they'll peg one back because they have a winning mindset.

Here's an example. Steve and Victor go out on a Saturday night to pull. Steve approaches one girl but gets shutdown and then goes home. Victor gets shutdown by the first girl, but approaches another then another. We are Steve.

    This is where I'm at.

Member since season 1, but if the club dares sign these players again for next season and I'm standing in the new stadium round 1 & Hammill & Elrich walk out then I'm leaving.

This has to be the biggest clean out in A League history.

I can really only purchase one membership each year and it's always been WSW but it'll be Blacktown City from next season if they keep this battler **** up.

Just look at this. This pretty much tells the mentality of our players. Kamau breaks through the Jets defence and has no one supporting him. The players are still in their own half either walking or jogging and the jets players are getting numbers to close down and stopping Kamau from doing anything. This is park football stuff from our team

    Horrible stuff last night.
I don't know if Babbel has it or not but we have him and he seems to be weekly confronted by the brutal reality that is the A League and the downward cycle of the club - for several years in reality.

I do think we, as fans, got too much success far to early.  It was an exhilarating ride with more than our fare share of luck.  We were the underrated underdog that played a simple block and chase style that worked back then.  We had some fast outlets, some solid defenders and 2 enforcers in DM.  It was a simple set up (and no youth, interestingly). We surprised teams and frustrated them into submission.  We played carefree and fearless, worked hard and all was good - too good.

Popa wanted to progress the style but from season 3 when we lost our way after the ridiculous cycle of 300,000 km of road trips across the planet.  He got rid of players seeking a new style, an evolving way forward but it never really worked.  We did make a grand final but we struggled across the line into 2nd place instead of blasting our way through into first, which should have been straightforward.  We lumbered and were not the team we had been.  Popa's last season was awful and then he bailed after another huge turnover.  Gumby was a 3rd choice desperate selection who ought to have been much better for his A league experience but really had not ever set the world on fire and reports suggest The National Team were not unpleased to let him go.  It was a disastrous year and the recruiting took us further backward.  Kamau, for example, isn't a first team player.  He still runs with his head down and runs into aimless space where he is easily defended.  SBW's post above actually reveals his lack of awareness of where his team is.  The ball was hoisted forward quickly and long and that is partly why Newcastle were in better positions and we were catching up.  Kamau slowed up and ran into the corner. Petratos would have run straight at goal with determination. I tried hard to think of who in last night's performance would even make the bench of the top 6 and couldn't think of anyone really.

Merrick said it in his PC - Newcastle dominated the midfield.  WSW had no midfield.  Tokich and Baccus were not in the game.  If we are to play the expansive attacking football that characterises teams in the better leagues (such as Bayern and other German teams) then it is the second ball we need to be prepared to defend.  If we lose the ball high up, then the midfield HAS to stop the play and try to intercept.  SFC do this very well.  If they can't get a tackle they commit a professional foul - and get away with doing it all game.  It gives them a chance to regroup.  In tight defence Newcastle belted the ball up field or out and regrouped - we gave it back to them in mid-field.  Baccus and Tokich don't have this capacity.  Merrick knew that all he had to do was bypass the mids and belt the ball into space and we had no pace.  I think he was surprised that we won't tackle either.

A lot of this falls on Babbel, of course and he has to react.  It probably won't mean much this season - it is gone and he has who he has.  I am not sure that the racist comments about Lederer etc are helpful, nor the sentiment that the owners, JT, Babbel etc don't care and are only in it for business.  You don't own an A League Club to make money and they have forked out substantial sums to fund the future.  They are doing the right thing re: accepting young players from Western Sydney and doing it without charging fees.  These things are good and will take time to filter through. They now have to put a strong focus back onto the men's and women's teams.  We need a huge turnaround.

A protest might not achieve anything but this crap has been going on for a couple of years now. All we do is jump on forums and moan to each other. A peaceful protest, with members, rbb outside the stadium may have little effect but when fox telecasts the game next week and there are 500 people inside spotless that’ll get the owners thinking. Also a 5.30 kickoff is perfect for time for majority to join in a protest. Or we can just post here again next week, and the week after that

Dont want to go then dont go, a protest because your team is **** is hardly going to do anything, they have your money anyway.  My bet is everyone who says enough is enough will be back when the team starts performing wether that be next year or in a few years time.  Me, I go cos my kids like to go and catch up with a few friends, we bitch about getting beat and playing terrible but we will be back next week.  You if you dont want to go then dont, thats fine as well, but a protest because they arent going well, what next?  You think the coach, players and bean counters don't want the team performing better as well?

    Link to comment

LMAO protest? Sure.... This country respects the opinions of the people and the people admire those that challenge authority...

You people support a corporation. Financial metrics over a wider commercial market mean more than the satisfaction of even 50k paying members. Bring in delegation and watch the boys club in charge change their tune.

How much will Foxtel and co contribute to the crony club once a team that doesn't care or doesn't invest the $$ gets dropped out of the prime comp?

Not sure why people think that Babbel is not cut for it. It's easy to motivate a team of **** ****s when they have winning momentum. I guess those of you with better knowledge in this will see something I don't.

I sat in the rain last night until 80th minute (I am the idiot in the bright yellow poncho). I watched a disjointed Wanderers team with no heart or passion. As others have said our team is sh... . If the team didn’t follow Babbel’s Instructions then it’s easy, drop the f....ker’s And play a new 11 from the rest of the squad. .

the reality is that many of the players are either so out of form or don’t care anymore. Vedran should be reserve for rest of season and bring in Suman. Llorente and Elrich are too slow and should be last resort. Roly is too greedy and too slow in distributing the ball , replace him with Grozo. Drop Riera and Kamau and bring in Duke, and Fitzgerald with Majok and O.docherty or Scott on the Bench.

At least that would shake up the team a bit and give us some hope that Babbel is the right coach.

    • Pep Guardiola: "I'm going to defend you until the last day of our lives in the press". Rudan: Runs onto the field at full-time to berate an attacker for a goal coughed up by the two fullbacks being lazy, then slates him in a post-game interview and the press conference.  Sure, he apologised for "singling him out", did he apologise for singling out the wrong player to start with? The Mariners & Nix finished 5th & 6th in 21/22 when Rudan took over. Rudan's second year we finished 4th then lost to the smurfs in Round 1 while the Mariners won the Grand Final. 3rd year, CCM are the favourites for the Premiership, the Nix have a chance if CCM drop points, and we're back in 6th with a game tomorrow against a team who beat us 7-0 earlier in the season that if we lose we're out of the finals spots, and even if we made it, we're probably just going to lose to Victory in Week 1. I'm so over this ****. Rudan has had three years and done **** all to improve things, he's not done well enough to add all this pointless drama and bullshit.
    • Does he miss the next match?
    • Couldn't they just play their NPL team? it would have been unlikely ADL would have beaten them as well
