  • Wanderers Bounce Back Over Mariners

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers improved to complete a professional 2-0 win against the Central Coast Marinres tonight.

Both sides began the game with a desire to attack, Michael McGlinchey could have opened the scoring within minutes, but after a good near post run he hit a shot straight at Vedran Janjetovic. Jaushua Sotirio broke down the right flank for the Wanderers, but stuck in two minds, he put a cross in front of an offside Riera instead of taking a shot at goal.

After half an hour Riera had a free header after getting onto the end of a free kick, but he touched it over the crossbar. The typically poor refereeing standards continued to hurt the Wanderers, as Matt Simon decided to stamp on the foot of Keanu Baccus off the ball, but apparently no action was taken, nor did the VAR intervene like it should have. 5 minutes before half-time Riera had another free header, this time after Josh Risdon hung the ball on the 6 yard box, but the finish was a repeat of the earlier ball over the bar.

Deep into the two minutes of stoppage time the Wanderers finally put the ball in the back of the net. After winning a late corner, the Mariners couldn't clear the danger and it was worked around the edge of the area until it reached Keanu Baccus. He lined up a strike and blasted the ball through a sea of bodies and left Ben Kennedy flailing at thin air.

Jack Clisby nearly made his introduction to the game for the Mariners after an hour a scoring one. After stepping onto the pitch, he took a free kick a long way out and nearly embarrassed Janjetovic by shooting at the near post, the ball almost bouncing over the hands of the keeper.

Bruce Kamau set the stage for the Wanderers to double their lead, Riera & Baumjohann combined on the edge of the penalty area, before Riera fed Kamau the ball to shoot from long distance. Ben Kennedy made a hash of the shot, spilling it to his right. Jaushua Sotirio pounced on the rebound for a simple tap-in.

The Mariners huffed and puffed but they had little penetration up front, and the Wanderers ran out as comfortable 2-0 winners. It elevates the Wanderers into the top 6 pending other results on the weekend, and sets them up for a Sydney Derby game next week.

Probably sotiro's best game in the shirt, notice he's running a Z pattern more, cutting in to middle bringing side defence with him allowing full back to slide the ball down the line therefore allowing him to chase down to the corner area on speed, worked great last night.

Thought Kamau worked his socks off again last night, that Cisse was a beast in defence for them but great to see biscuit charging him back like a rugby tackle just before a corner in first half, in the stamp incident well all flocked in, someone missed the chance to give simon a sly one....

Obviously Ziegler, what a difference and Raul needed to be dropped, Elrich has more nous how to defend full stop.

If Riera took even half of his very good chances, our season so far would be a different story. I understand he is the best striker we have had etc etc... but he is horribly out of form and has been all year. I've always been a fan of his but as a marquee, how long can you patiently wait for him to try and find some form??

Stick a picture of Gumby on his locker......lol.....with the words....."I'm baaaaack !..." on it...........lol    Should fire him up.....lol

A better performance against much weaker opposition.

The 6 and 8 situation is still a worry. Too many times they were both sitting too deep and letting the Mariners midfield pick out players making runs or invited them to drive on us. Other times they both pressed leaving a huge hole behind them.

O'Doherty was all over the shop and rarely settled but Baccus, important goal aside, had some impact.

If we had depth on the bench you'd give Riera a miss from the starting 11 and let him get his head right. But he's gonna have to grind himself back into form at some point.

More shoot ***** from Kamau would be nice.

Sotirio had so many chances in good positions but decision making and touch let him down. Nice that he scored.

ABJ put on a clinic, Sydney will mark him right and kick the **** out of him. Who will step up around him to make the difference? Hopefully a returning Roly?

It's nice to bag a win. Hope they show some steel next week.

Was a poor game really, two sides playing with no confidence and Corica won't be losing any sleep watching that performance, Zielgler added a bit of starch and will be better for the run, ABJ is wasted and should be playing in a  better team, poor Riera desperately needs a goal and just can't get anything going, Sotiro may have scored but Bill Cosby has better touch than him.  Take the 3 and on to next week.

Scrappy game. Ultimately we've only beaten the nix and mariners so it needs putting in perspective.

Ziggy added some stardust in defence that's for sure. BJ getting better. Riera is a worry.

Crowd a tick over 8k. Eeeeek  that's terrible.

"Ziggy added some stardust" ......Loving your work Beat :-)

to be fair completely different situations though, Dino helped create a lot of goals while Riera really isnt as much, also we didnt need to rely on Dino to score cause we had other threats while we dont really have many goal scoring threats

that said on the match, decent but nothing to write home about

And to be fair, Riera is also one of our best defenders. He clears the ball more often than our fullbacks some games.

Ok serious reply now, Ziegler had an immediate impact this is a good sign.

Ans Elrich had a much happier time in a more familiar role.

Yeah a win! And a scrappy one at that. Cannot understate the importance of having a proper centre back. Thought Ziegler was excellent tonight. Agree on ABJ he's a cut above the rest. But that's why he's here. Hopefully Riera can find some form asap otherwise maybe he needs to return to Spain coz we need a finisher desperately. Would be a shame coz he has really impressed with his work rate and passion this season. And Matt Simon **** off you dirty ****. Over refs allowing that bull****. Ffs they know what he's like

Riera and ABJ are working as ball carrying DM's and AM/Striker.  Riera is everywhere and runs his guts out but because he and ABJ have to go back so far to get the ball, they aren't able to play in their proper places.  They are also targeted and double-teamed because opposition don't really have to worry about anyone else.  They were the only two who held the ball and had consistently good touches.

There is little point in Riera being in the 6 yard box most of the game because the passing and crossing from wings was simply atrocious.  The balls were either sailing over everyone's heads or crashing into the first defender.  Kamau is good when he has space to run (both into clear space or at defenders) and improved later in the game when he started to tackle a little and want the ball.  The 'boys' are soft and small.  They are pushed off the ball or simply not in a contest - all good when they have space and possession (except for a wayward first touch and errant pass).  In the first half the general passing was pretty bad from the defensive players and wingers (ie ABJ and Riera were about the only two consistently passing to players...).

Having said that we grew into the game and the defense was pretty solid (compared to other weeks).  Ziegler made a HUGE difference in the centre and was constantly in the way of their attack.  That allowed Hammil, Risdon and Elrich to play better and more as a unit - but it was only CCM.  Next week will be a real test!  SFC have players back and we will be more than pushed.

Where was WST and all the RBB subgroups? Seems like our ultras fans come and go, but the suits are still there?

Kudos to all this who turned up in the RBB and the stands, it was worth it.

We played similar to the Newcastle game, except Ziegler made a difference, few shots actually went in, and the ref carded the opposition and not just us.

RBB continue to work their butts off, even when down on numbers as at CCM  game, but they get little reward at Spotless. My seat is not all that far from them, but sadly their efforts become little more than background noise rather than creating the atmosphere,  Even WDWSF was only half-hearted among those near me., Couldn't even tell you whether the Proznan is still part of the program (it was at the derby but little response from supporters outside the RBB)..But keep up the good work.  Your efforts are sorely needed more than ever at the moment, and Parramatta can't come quickly enough!

Crowd is no real concern, everyone at xmas parties before the xmas break that accounted for 3-4k

Convenient excuse. We’ve had plenty of pre Christmas games over the years that have had solid crowds. Our Christmas Eve game a few seasons back had about 11-12k from memory.

Ironically I haven’t been to a home game other than Mudgee due to Christmas parties but I still think it’s a convenient excuse. Crowds league wide are dire and are getting worse.

After a 3-0 defeat they will be looking to bounce back but MB will be watching that game a few times to see where SFC weakness lied and try to take advantage of that.. Hopefully this is worrying signs for the smurfs

Couldn’t go to the game, but was at the Kevin Hart event next door (my girlfriend bought tickets in pre-sale ages ago)

Had a bad feeling about the game but glad we got the win

She and I both wore our WSW jerseys to the Hart stand up comedy event to show we were there in spirit (and 600m away physically), which funnily drew a confused comment from a security guard when we were lining up
