    Wanderers Close Season With Win

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers ended their season tonight picking up a 2-1 win against Melbourne Victory.

Daniel Georgievski missed the game after suffering a groin injury at training and Kwame Yeboah was also absent. Pirmin Schwegler who announced his retirement midweek made his way into the starting lineup for his final game as a professional footballer after one season with the Wanderers, over a decade of Bundesliga experience and 14 caps for Switzerland including earning a spot in their South African World Cup squad. Marco Rojas was the big exclusion for the Victory, in a game that neither team had anything to play for.

The Wanderers got off on the front foot as Simon Cox linked up with Mitch Duke who cut back onto his right foot and fired into the block of a Melbourne defender. Matt Jurman would have been an unexpected route to the opening goal and he nearly found it with an outrageous attempted lob of Victory keeper Matt Acton, on his left foot he made Acton leap and knock the ball over the bar to keep it out. 20 minutes in Jurman was put into the notebook for a high boot that hit Storm Roux in the face. Melbourne Victory had their first shot on target through Lawrie-Lattanzio as he blazed very wide from a very long way out in the 21st minute and then again in the 25th which he shot straight at the keeper. Fulback Mathieu Cordier picked up the 2nd yellow card of the game as he tripped a Victory attacker who had managed to beat him for pace. Duke then tried an extravagant outside of the foot shot that was nowhere near on target.

Pirmin Schwegler added yet another Wanderer to the officials notebook as he picked up a yellow card for a mid-field entanglement. Lawrie-Lattanzio joined the Wanderers with him in the 32nd minute after tripping Keanu Baccus and bringing him to ground. Simon Cox injected a touch of class as he attempted a bullet header from the edge of the penalty area.

Schwegler then secured a goal in his final game and gave his team the lead in the 33rd minute. Dylan McGowan found Tate Russell on the right flank, he moved the ball quickly on for the run of Duke and his first time cut back evaded Jordan O'Doherty but not Cox. The striker laid the ball neatly into the path of the onrushing midfielder and Schwegler made no mistake with the finishing, a cool and collected left footed strike placed perfectly past Acton who was wrong-footed and didn't reacted as fast as he needed to get a hand to it.

The start of the second half opened with a shocking challenge from Aaron Anderson, with Duke flying up the wing the Victory teenager chose to go studs up into the back of Duke with no hope of getting the ball. It sparked a melee as players from both sides came together to argue the point and it was finished with Anderson picking up a well deserved yellow card. Leight Broxham then scythed down Mo Adam from behind with a scissoring tackle that earned him a yellow as well.

The Wanderers doubled the lead in the 61st minute through Jordan O'Doherty. Mo Adam nodded a Cordier long ball for Duke's run, he cross into the middle of the area and found O'Doherty and he lashed a left footed first time shot past Acton at the near post for his 3rd A-League goal.

Victory pulled one back immediately. A Broxham cross from the right hand side found Lawrie-Lattanzio who made a meal of the shot, but his atrocious miskick bounced right to Andrew Nabbout who was being played onside by McGowan, Ziegler and Prendergast despite being a bare 3 yards from goal, leaving Nabbout with no-one to stop him passing into the open net. Schwegler then took his leave of the game, receiving a standing ovation from the home crowd as Nick Sullivan came on to replace him. Nabbout put the ball in the back of the net in the 83rd minute after the Wanderers were caught trying to play out from the back but they were rescued by the offside flag as Tass Mourdoukoutas had stepped up just enough to keep the attacking player offside.

In stoppage time the Wanderers should have won a penalty as So Nishikawa cut down cut down Bruce Kama, but play continued with Kamau dinking the ball into the middle of the area with Mo Adam attempting a spectacular bicycle kick but coming up with nothing but air. It was the last major action of the game as the match and the season for the Wanderers ended with a 2-1 win.

So was the Grozos run and miss the party we have long been promised? I appreciate he’s still a kid and most players need some time (and games!) to develop, but surely we would have seen a little more by now if he was as good as some believe.

did we even touch the ball the last 20 mins? bozza said it perfectly 2 teams who have fallen down badly especially us over the last few years. No finals since popa left, Duke and Schwegler gone hopefully we can recruit well for the next season, the hard work begins now.

Odoherty looked good up front and Tate is getting better with speed and ball control

If I was the manager I would be getting as many extra training sessions with the young guys ( Adam, Grozos especially ) in the off season as I could. They're going to have to step up. Cox is never going to win a sprint up front ( unless it's for a pie :P ) and we need someone with pace.

He'd twice the size and double Adam's age but I think Cox would beat him in a sprint and not just for the pies.

Fat Cox looks better in that position and it's taken how long to add the extra midfielder that made the difference, was a decent performance but should have seen this effort and tweeked formation weeks ago.

Thank faq it's over, hopefully WSW get it together soon as getting sick of this.

The only place Cox should be playing is up front, central striker (or the advanced striker if we revert to a two up front). He needs to be the one in the box ready to receive the ball from our attacking players.

Even though playing JOD further forward with Baccus & Schwegler behind (so we were playing a 5-2-1-2 formation), the 5 at the back experiment is a failure and we need to revert to a normal formation next year. 4231 and camp the entire team behind the ball when required and play on the counter.

You really need exceptional wingbacks, and we’ve only got one that’s found sound half decent form in the last 3 games.

Flat back 4 for me please

I know Mo Adam is still young, but didnt look like a A-league level player this season.

He's one that do with a season in NPL 1.

Too many times, touch is off, gets bullied of the ball.

Going by what Scwhelger said, he's saw this young team making finals, most likely the season after next.

We can't go 4 seasons without finals football. Losing him and most likely Duke, that's looking very possible.

I have been trying to get the hashtag #NoGrozosYesParty going for a while now

Anyone see the shot he took? Clean on goal on the right wing, shooting inside the penalty area and manages to still miss the target after playing maybe like 5 minutes?

He has a bit of a football brain when he tried to lob chip the defence 2 minutes later but it looked more like trying to chip the goalkeeper

    I remain unconvinced

    Adam - lazy

He got involved in a bit of build up then when the breaks on he slowly jogs forward. Like **** dude, you’ve been on the park 8 minutes, you’re 19 and need to prove yourself. Run cu/nt!

guess we also need to consider while Tass, Bacchus, Tate and the rest are all from that 22-23 age group Grozos only turned 20 a few days ago, his next two years will say a lot about how he develops but if he wants more game time I reckon he either needs a bumper off season or a move to CCM or Bulls or something.

I know the exact moment you are talking about. He was also so slow in driving into the box, looked like he was jogging/walking into the box and then shoots it about 10 metres past the far post. Really poor and thought he would bury that. He looked so slow the whole game to be honest.

We should utilise the new loan rule thing and loan him to Mariners or something to get game time.

Tate Russel geez he is one to watch I am really liking the look of him. If he has an entire season playing like he did in the restart of the season the future is limitless for him especially with the Olympics (if they go ahead). He really is that old fashion physical defender, but also has good ball control which is more than I can say for a lot of A-league players. If we go back to back 4 and have winger to combo with Russel we could see Hersi/Polenz combo 2.0

Happy for the win for Schwegler it really has been amazing watching him. Such a fantastic player and the fact that he was able to support Baccus in midfield was positive it will be hard to replace him.

Yep. If I remember correctly he did a great tackle on Baumjohan in the first derby against the smurfs...sat him on his arse in no uncertain fashion...legally. Someone here made a gif iirc. He will be missed.

    • That one looks and sounds like maybe it was made up here, I'll give you that
    • What a weird day. Went to my 4 appointed games and had to abandon due to water with rain failing in both goal mouths. Incident Report No 1 Volunteered for 3 other games near home which were uncovered In the second (AAM) I had to issue a straight red R6. Send off report time. The player decided to have another go after full time. Incident Report No 2. The third game was a forfeit which was found out during the AAM game.
