  • Wanderers Demolish Ill-Disciplined Sydney United

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers faced up against local side Sydney United in the FFA Cup Round of 16 tonight in Campbelltown, demolishing the NPL side and taking full advantage of poor defence and discipline to annihilate their opponents 7 goals to 1. Following the game the Wanderers were drawn in a Quarter Final clash away to Melbourne City.

After a back and forth opening, Daniel Georgievski cut back from deep on the United left flank but fired his shot high and wide. In the 11th minute Mo Adam found himself in space at the edge of the area, his shot curled away from the far post and out for a goal kick. Sydney United had their first major chance of the game in the 15th minute, breaking on the counter-attack with a sweeping move that ended without result as their striker mis-controlled the last cross, Daniel Lopar gratefully picking up the rolling ball.

The Wanderers struck the first blow via wingback Bruce Kamau. Georgievski created an opening on the left, passing onto Radoslaw Majewski, he cut back onto his left foot, crossed over the centre of the penalty area, Kamau chested down a deflection, then finished emphatically with his left boot. Georgievski continued his excellent game as he nearly scored the Wanderers second with a cross-shot that hit the crossbar.

Georgievski put an exclamation point on his performance by doubling the Wanderers advantage in the 22nd minute. Taking advantage of poor playing out from the United defence, letting Majewski pounce on the loose ball, launch a rocket that the United keeper could only push out to the 6 yard box, Georgievski was following through like a striker, reacted quicker than central defender Peter Markovic and he squeezed the ball through the gap between the on rushing keeper & Markovic's forlorn dive. Mo Adam almost made it 3 in the blink of an eye, Baccus nodding on a header that Adam ran on, United's keeper Daniel Sadaka threw himself to the feet of the young striker to prevent the scoreline getting any worse.

10 minutes from half-time the Wanderers lead was extended to 3-0. Pirmin Schwegler battling in midfield to win the ball, he quickly aimed a through ball behind the United defence, Adam lashed a shot that Sadaka blocked low with the foot, but once again the rebound fell to a Wanderer, as Yeboah flung himself into the air, right foot arcing through the air to knock the ball from a meter out.

In the first few minutes after half-time Sydney United had a penalty. After a corner, Patrick Antelmi dived in the 6 yard box when being marked by Schwegler, the referee was conned all ends up and Antelmi sent Lopar the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Daniel Lopar stepped up to keep the game at 3-1 with three miraculous saves in a row. The first, he stuck a hand out after looking beaten at the near post, then not long later he dove well down to his right on a long range strike then reacted magnificently to keep Perkatis from a tap-in.

The mini-comeback was stomped out with a Wanderers counter-attack in the 56th minute. Georgievski attacked down the left flank and delivered a cross into the centre and Matthew Bilic suffered the awful fate of seeing his attempted clearance skew into the top corner of his own net to make the match 4-1.

Flashpoint on the hour mark, after the Wanderers cleared the ball away from goal Vlastelica put in a shocking late lunge from behind on Tate Russel, sparking a melee that resulted in former Wanderer Yianni Perkatis throwing a punch. Kurt Ams giving Vlastelica a yellow for the tackle and a straight red for Perkatis.

Tate Russel who replaced Bruce Kamau at half-time sealed the match with a powerful left footed strike in the 70th minute. With United down to 10, he found acres of space on his flank and after a neat touch to bring the ball down, his shot beat Sadaka on his right.

Majewski then capped his game by scoring his first and the Wanderers 6th and then Georgievski scored another, but I couldn't tell you what happened as I'm writing this because Fox Sports decided the world needed to watch the Central Coast & Brisbane Roar game instead of the scheduled televised match. After having to watch that game for a while we eventually saw the goal, Majewski blasted a right footed wonderstrike that found top bins, then Georgievski cut back inside onto his right and placed a shot into the bottom corner to make it 7-1, and that was the scoreline at full time.

The Wanderers dominated the first half, fought their way back from a brief comeback by Sydney United then rammed home their advantage after the Perkatis red card. It was a thoroughly professional performance and leaves the Wanderers still in the hunt for the first trophy in years.

With 8 teams left in the FFA Cup draw the fixtures are: Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets, Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers, Brisbane Strikers vs Moreland Zebras and Hume City vs Central Coast Mariners.

Superb display of football from the boys. I don't think any of them had a bad game at all  There's some amazing stats for tonight's game:

    - 20 shots with 12 shots on target.
    - 70% possession of the ball
    - 523 passes with 87% completed pass accuracy

Here's my run down opinion on each goal:

1st goal: Even though Kamau's goal technically came from horrible defence from Sydney United trying desperately to get it out of their penalty area, Kamau was at the right spot and at the right time. The good thing is looking back at the replay there was 4 Wanderers (Georgievski, Yeobah, Adam and Kamau) so it was good that the cross from Majewski managed to land on Kamau who seemed to have none of the Sydney United players defending him.

2nd goal: The fact that Adam is a striker and willing to help on defend to get a quick counter brings so much joy to me, mark my words "The kid is a future superstar in the making" and so glad he is playing with the Wanderers. Moving on, the pass from Adam to Majewski was spot on as Sydney United only had two defenders. Majewski shot attempt looked like a screamer but you have to say well done to Sadaka for stopping but Georgievski was at the right spot at the right time again for us with the deflect.

3rd goal: Our counter attacks were just spot on tonight, I really hope that is type of stuff happens throughout this upcoming season. Schwegler's pass to Adam was superb but just unfortunate Adam didn't get it at the back of the net. Personally, Sydney United had 3 defenders after Sadaka stopped it so the fact that Yeobah got it in the back of the net after Sadaka stopped Adam's shot on target really showed their poor defence.

4th goal: The own goal just summed up Sydney United's performance. Their defence was woeful.

5th goal: The building up to Russell's goal was superb, our passing all night was great, He was open with no defence and on him and just a great goal. That's his second goal now?

6th goal: What.a.screamer from Majewski! Personally, any goal outside the penalty is going to bring me joy. He was on fire tonight with his display of football and for him to get a goal was just the icing on the cake.

7th goal: Georgievski's 2nd was just pure easy and Sydney United's defence just going to sleep, they were done by then.

Other notes: The penalty to Schwegler was a terrible decision, I'm glad he didn't get a card for it though otherwise I would of been furious.

Perkitis is a massive c**t. That type of behavior is unacceptable on a football field. I hope his red card makes him miss out on playing in the NPL NSW Grand Final.

Ok, so some of you have seen a little more of our squad this season & are enjoying what your now seeing.

I'll add a couple of observations.

Mo Adam isn't ready to be a starting player in our squad, but as things stand injury wise, he has to start most games. He's perfectly suited to a sub role atm (not unlike the role Santa played for us), but in another 12 months when his body is further developed & accustomed to senior football, he may well become a starting player, preferably in a wide roll.

The linesman made a huge mistake on an offside call, which proceeded the play which lead up to the Lopar double save. Daniel is growing on me as each game goes by.

DG is up & about & has been since young Wilmering played so at LB well against Leeds. Pressure for positions (even if only perceived) is important & keeps players on their toes.

Rado must have remembered where he left his shooting boots & had someone send them to Oz. His set pieces are difficult to deal with & now he's found his shooting range, he will grow in confidence.

Yianni Perkatis saw red mist for some inexplicable reason. After the through the back challenge on Tate, the melee occurred & whilst being restrained by numerous WSW players, he was seen to be kicking out / studs up towards the legs of someone I assume Kwame, who has been accused by SU of throwing a punch. The video of the melee is said to clearly show YP's actions which earn't him the red card.

Dumb move Yianni, 3rd man in then you start inciting further trouble. That brainsnap will see you miss the NPL1 GF on Saturday & most likely, a couple of games at the start of next season.

Otherwise, another interesting night, although I'm still getting used to this going home a winner caper. I suppose it will grow on me after a while.

Btw, Kosta will return to training with squad by weeks end, which should see him available come our next FFA Cup game on 17/18th Sept.

Aussie Pat isn't giving much away, however, he's progressing steadily & still aims to be back playing prior to the commencement of the season.

We finally have professional football players representing wsw. About bloody time too.

I understand why Fox switched the game - they have more viewers that WSW fans and we were killing SU58, the other game was a great cup tie.

BUT they should have had an option for us to watch it, whether streaming on their website or just providing a second channel that we could switch to. Having the Brisbane-Mariners game streaming on the website and on the main channel while we can't see ours anywhere is a bit daft.

The again, that's what you get for staying home! First FFA Cup "home" tie I've missed I think, and I can't watch it!

Schwegler will be our best recruit.

Shame we couldn't keep a clean sheet due to incompetent refs yet again.

I'm also sick of these rigged draws.

Agree about Shwegler and the draw but the way I see it,  this vs City is really our Final cos if we get over City then its really simply Us or winner of Jets/Adelaide playing off for a trophy cos we will have too much class if we draw the remaining NPL team or CCM and we should also get the Final played at our shiny new toy.

Though we were playing an NPL side, that was the finest display of short, sharp interpassing and movement I can ever recall seeing from a Wanderers team. Often, it was just beautiful to watch. So much better than what we became depressingly used to seeing last season.

So, well done guys - and we still have nearly two more months of work, recovery time for injured players and perhaps a couple of signings to come. Hopefully the season to come will make the past couple seem like a momentary nightmare!

What was the drama after the game at the SUS end? Couldn’t see too much as I walked past but heard a heap of angry Croats yelling at Police while hiding behind a brick wall...

Great performance, we’re going places !

No one's mentioned it yet, but how important is it to have a quality keeper between the sticks! Lopar was sensational and could well be one of our most valuable players if he stays fit and on the pitch. The strikers and playmakers always get the plaudits but a goalkeeper pulling off a sensational save is just as important as a goal scored.
