  • Wanderers Demolish Ill-Disciplined Sydney United

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers faced up against local side Sydney United in the FFA Cup Round of 16 tonight in Campbelltown, demolishing the NPL side and taking full advantage of poor defence and discipline to annihilate their opponents 7 goals to 1. Following the game the Wanderers were drawn in a Quarter Final clash away to Melbourne City.

After a back and forth opening, Daniel Georgievski cut back from deep on the United left flank but fired his shot high and wide. In the 11th minute Mo Adam found himself in space at the edge of the area, his shot curled away from the far post and out for a goal kick. Sydney United had their first major chance of the game in the 15th minute, breaking on the counter-attack with a sweeping move that ended without result as their striker mis-controlled the last cross, Daniel Lopar gratefully picking up the rolling ball.

The Wanderers struck the first blow via wingback Bruce Kamau. Georgievski created an opening on the left, passing onto Radoslaw Majewski, he cut back onto his left foot, crossed over the centre of the penalty area, Kamau chested down a deflection, then finished emphatically with his left boot. Georgievski continued his excellent game as he nearly scored the Wanderers second with a cross-shot that hit the crossbar.

Georgievski put an exclamation point on his performance by doubling the Wanderers advantage in the 22nd minute. Taking advantage of poor playing out from the United defence, letting Majewski pounce on the loose ball, launch a rocket that the United keeper could only push out to the 6 yard box, Georgievski was following through like a striker, reacted quicker than central defender Peter Markovic and he squeezed the ball through the gap between the on rushing keeper & Markovic's forlorn dive. Mo Adam almost made it 3 in the blink of an eye, Baccus nodding on a header that Adam ran on, United's keeper Daniel Sadaka threw himself to the feet of the young striker to prevent the scoreline getting any worse.

10 minutes from half-time the Wanderers lead was extended to 3-0. Pirmin Schwegler battling in midfield to win the ball, he quickly aimed a through ball behind the United defence, Adam lashed a shot that Sadaka blocked low with the foot, but once again the rebound fell to a Wanderer, as Yeboah flung himself into the air, right foot arcing through the air to knock the ball from a meter out.

In the first few minutes after half-time Sydney United had a penalty. After a corner, Patrick Antelmi dived in the 6 yard box when being marked by Schwegler, the referee was conned all ends up and Antelmi sent Lopar the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Daniel Lopar stepped up to keep the game at 3-1 with three miraculous saves in a row. The first, he stuck a hand out after looking beaten at the near post, then not long later he dove well down to his right on a long range strike then reacted magnificently to keep Perkatis from a tap-in.

The mini-comeback was stomped out with a Wanderers counter-attack in the 56th minute. Georgievski attacked down the left flank and delivered a cross into the centre and Matthew Bilic suffered the awful fate of seeing his attempted clearance skew into the top corner of his own net to make the match 4-1.

Flashpoint on the hour mark, after the Wanderers cleared the ball away from goal Vlastelica put in a shocking late lunge from behind on Tate Russel, sparking a melee that resulted in former Wanderer Yianni Perkatis throwing a punch. Kurt Ams giving Vlastelica a yellow for the tackle and a straight red for Perkatis.

Tate Russel who replaced Bruce Kamau at half-time sealed the match with a powerful left footed strike in the 70th minute. With United down to 10, he found acres of space on his flank and after a neat touch to bring the ball down, his shot beat Sadaka on his right.

Majewski then capped his game by scoring his first and the Wanderers 6th and then Georgievski scored another, but I couldn't tell you what happened as I'm writing this because Fox Sports decided the world needed to watch the Central Coast & Brisbane Roar game instead of the scheduled televised match. After having to watch that game for a while we eventually saw the goal, Majewski blasted a right footed wonderstrike that found top bins, then Georgievski cut back inside onto his right and placed a shot into the bottom corner to make it 7-1, and that was the scoreline at full time.

The Wanderers dominated the first half, fought their way back from a brief comeback by Sydney United then rammed home their advantage after the Perkatis red card. It was a thoroughly professional performance and leaves the Wanderers still in the hunt for the first trophy in years.

With 8 teams left in the FFA Cup draw the fixtures are: Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets, Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers, Brisbane Strikers vs Moreland Zebras and Hume City vs Central Coast Mariners.

Was really happy by the performance by the boys. Definitely a different vibe & determination coming out of the camp.

I am not convinced that you can look too far ahead. We are still 6 weeks away from the start of the season, completing a proper preseason is critical for our season, so is the recruitment of a number 9 & the opposition must be taken into account. Yes we are playing one of the best in NSW NPL but we must remember that the heavy workload these guys have faced together with a rotated team looking ahead to NPL grand final means that we can’t read too much into the opposition & how they really tested us.

By all means look at the body language, cohesion of the players, sharp touches, the way we kept possession & the way we held our shape allowing us to play our football. All very positive signs so early in preseason but we haven’t won anything & we don’t want to peak too early.

We definitely played better than City did in the game versus Marconi but so early in preseason it means very little. If we can build on our performance tonight (very hard to exceed it) & deal with a city team that will give our defense many more challenges than SU then we should be in for a good game & hopefully a spot in the semi final.

    That's what I wondered about Heartle$$ v Marconi.

From what I saw, the team last night stuck to a plan to frustrate SU58 by keeping the ball away from them. The team hunted in packs of 3 without the ball. Schwegler and Baccus were dominant in the midfield with both giving pinpoint passes. Georgievski has still got a turn of speed. The CBS were dominant in the air.  Lopar was dominant in his box AND barking instructions as to the gaps in the opposition to exploit. Majewski teamed up brilliantly with Yeboah and Mo Adam, who were tearing up the tired SU defense.  The only disappointing aspects was that Adam didn't score and the second half performance by Kurt Ams.

Imagine, Duke to return as well as Ziegler. Grozos to return as well. Perhaps a quality striker after the European window shuts either as a signing or season long loan.

The Heartle$$ mob will be be doing hours of video analysis on the last 2 FFA Cup games.

Well the 60 minutes that fox have available, sure SU58 would give it to them if they asked.

After hearing him talk, I'm less likely to agree. He tried to let things go & wasn't super card happy. Only problem was that he didn't pick up the straight red for the tackle that led to the melee or KY's punch/lash out. Impossible to see everything in a melee.

Everyone is giving Fox a hard time.

I'm sure that if anyone was watching via the MyFootball app on the phone or tablet (or Android TV) didn't get interrupted.

FWIW, I was disappointed but not angry when Fox switched to the Roar vs Mariners game.

Whilst WSW supporters (and those involved with SU no doubt) were scrutinizing every deal of the performance, the other game had developed into an impressive deadlocked game, involving two teams whose supporters have experienced as much recent joy as we have.

Not to have been able to watch their teams battling it out must have frustrating.

Plus for the neutral, our game was finished, result-wise, and the other was becoming an epic battle.

In terms of drama and promoting wider interest in the Cup, and in Aust football in general, it was an understandable decision.

    My 2 cents worth.

We did get interrupted! There clearly wasn’t a separate online stream for the main TV game, so when they switched that broadcast it also stuffed around those of us on the app (me) and Kayo (others).

I do understand why they switched things around on the TV stream, but next time I hope they do something to keep the online stream going so that we aren’t in a world where the rednecks and sea bogans are being shown on two streams at once.

I thought he was terrible in the second half. You could see SU decided at half time to throw all tactics out the window and they just started kicking the **** out of us and committing little fouls to break the rhythm. We got nothing for a period of about 10-15 mins and they were awarded a foul every time a WSW player went near them.

Trying to show snippets of 4 games was always going to be a nightmare. I get what they wanted to, but they could have done it differently. They could have just switched to the other game once a goal was scored there. Switch to the other game, keep the WSW in the bottom corner of the screen, show the build up, goal and replay, then go back to WSW game. Don't park the broadcast for 15mins and anticipate the goal and miss out on two goals in the main game.

In saying that, I watched this on Kayo... Kayo that I'm not paying for.

The mariners v Brisbane game was already streamed. They cut the Wanderers v SU game and made a second stream.

The did it because they didn’t want a federation team being murdered on national television.

It would have hilariously easy to swap the streams to CCM appeared on 505 when it was obvious the scores were going to blow out and CCMvBR was heating up.

I appreciate you are trying to give people the benefit of the doubt but this was a healthy mix of stupidity, laziness and self interest.

But the people who wanted to watch the Roar v CCM game were either already watching it on a stream or had decided they weren't able to watch it at all. How would they know to turn on the SU v WSW game with 15 minutes to go to see their team? What proportion of viewers were disappointed SU or WSW fans compared to the proportion of CCM or Roar fans who were watching our game instead of theirs and were suddenly happy to see their team? Not to mention all the people who paid for a service like Kayo because of the promise to show all FFA Cup games live and then have absolutely no way to watch one of the games.

Kicking Kwame in the nuts, whilst being held back by numerous players, isn't a wise strategy.

What is the tale of the tape between those two?  I suspect Kwame could deck him easily if he wanted to.

When the stream switched to the CCM game, it was just in time to see two goals there as well - the scramble to make it 2-1 to the CCM and then the penalty about ten seconds later to make it 2-2

That said, would’ve been nice to have a choice to watch that game

Most people who wanted to watch CCM/BRI would have already been doing so, changing games was stupid.

The dumbest thing, I went last night to watch the full match on the fox website.

First half is a pure feed of the game, none of the cuts to other goals, the commentary went away during those crosses.

Second half. It's the fox sports feed. And it cuts away to the other game. :xmad:

His beloved coaching staff were apparently scouting at Campbelltown according to Speed. I been watching the replay on the MyFootball app. Waiting to see if it goes to the end.

Lopar saves the josh McDonald shot then does the double save from the ensuing save.

"We didn't just want to win, we wanted to win comfortably and that's what we did. We wanted to show what we can do and who we are. The effort was very good and we went out there with a mentality of fighting to the end and finishing it off.”

There's the mentality word again. If fighting to the end, and trying to finish off games, is what can expect from here onward then I am all for it.

Concur it’s was a great performance against the weakest opposition we will probably face this season - that puts it into context.

Lets see where we are 5 or 6 games into the season I’ll reserve judgement until then. Does it look better than recent history? Hell yes

Should we all be ready to think the good days are back? Hell no

    long way to go!
