  • Wanderers Destroyed By Wooden Spoon Mariners

    mack

In Gosford tonight the Western Sydney Wanderers have been demolished 3-1 by the last placed Central Coast Mariners, and were lucky that a second half red card to Kye Rowles helped keep the scoreline remotely respectable.

National Youth League goalkeeper Jack Greenwood made his A-League debut for the Wanderers due to a keeper injury crisis that saw Vedran Janjetovic, Danijel Nizic and Nick Suman all out of the squad. For the Mariners it was Adam Pearce taking the place of Ben Kennedy between the sticks. Giancarlo Gallifuoco's good substitute appearance in the Sydney Derby saw him elevated to the starting lineup for the visitors.

Brendan Hamill helped setup the first goal for the Mariners. After giving away a foul deep on the flank, he then proceeded to pull down Matt Simon as he was making his attacking run, giving the Central Coast a free kick 19 yards out from goal dead centre. Matt Simon used his Captain's privileged to take the kick and a 10 meter long run up. With an inevitable power drive at goal coming up, the Wanderers wall jumped up split like the Grand Canyon giving Simon a gaping hole to fire through, perhaps taking a slight deflection to give Greenwood no chance. It was dreadful defending, anyone could see that Simon was never going to attempt a deft chip over the wall, they should have lined all 10 outfield players up shoulder to shoulder and stood their ground.

Simon had a brace just after half-time through a questionable foul against Greenwood. With a soft cross played into the middle, Greenwood rose to punch away and made a mess, collecting Jordan Murry with a tap to the face. It was the type of 'foul' that referees in the A-League simply see as a hazard of playing football, but tonight for the first time the referee decided it needed to be punished with a penalty and a yellow card. No other referee will give a similar foul & penalty for another 5 years. It simply shows the complete lack of consistency that A-League referees have in their decision making process. Simon blasted the penalty to his right, Greenwood getting a slight touch but not enough to deflect the powerful shot wide.

The Mariners were in dreamland as Kye Rowles scored the 3rd in the 55th minute. From a corner a basic cross to the near post saw Tarek Elrich misjudge the flight, letting Rowles have a free header. The Wanderers didn't have anyone on the far post and as usual, it costs the side a goal when it should have been easily cleared away.

Mark Bridge came on for his 250th A-League match and made an immediate impact from the penalty spot. After scramble in the penalty area, Rashid Mahazi was bought down by Jacob Meling for a penalty to the Wanderers. Bridge powered his strike into the top corner past Pearce in goals. It was also at this point that Brendan Hamill suffered a concussion when he was poleaxed by Pearce just prior to the penalty award.

Rowles put his side's command of the game in danger shortly after with his disgraceful 71st minute challenge. Coming in hard and fast with a two footed studs up lunge on Alexander Baumjohann. Rowles collected the Wanderers play-maker in a challenge that was up there as one of the worst in the history of the league, and Baumjohann was lucky to avoid having his ankle or leg broken by the disgusting challenge. Referee Adam Kersey completely missed the foul from a mere 4 meters away, waving play on and only after the intervention of the VAR did he eventually pull out a well deserved red card.

The card helped the Wanderers regain control of the match but it did precious little to assist them in further damaging the deficit. Abraham Majok having the best chance deep into stoppage time but when a simple pass into the net was required he tried to blast the ball and skied it. Combined with early results the Wanderers have secured an 8th place finish in the A-League, one worse than under the Foxe/Gombau leadership.

The Wanderers play their final game of the season next week against Melbourne Victory at the Sydney Olympic Stadium, Homebush on Saturday the 27th of April at 7:50PM.

    Nope they are shite

Yes we are , but you can't tell me man for man that the Mariners are better than us (at least on paper).

We play well one week and crap the next. The one thing Babbel has talked about all year is still the one thing this team doesn't have (Mentality). Wether to compete or win on a consistent basis. This I feel is where Babbel falls down. We should of won last night, the Mariners are not a better team than us. It is our lack of mentality.

Yes...that actually comes initially from one source....the man in charge.

The rest of the team either buys in...or not.

I agree in that we shouldn’t lose to the mariners, maybe there is enough skill in the team, but they are as a team  piss weak.

The free kick goal sums it all up, starts with our captain giving a stupid soft free kick away on the edge of the area, and then the wall parting rather than letting ball hit them

The whole squad should be ashamed of themselves but they really couldn’t care less. Our number 10 is basically here on holiday

    Sorry I’ll change change it

we are shite and piss weak

As for Babbel He can go too for all I care right now

drove over an hour to watch that **** And then the club post happy Easter messages on Facebook and the typical “tough night twitter response”

Somebody else said it, failure  starts at the top, and that’s above Babbel, this isn’t one season of failure it’s the result of the last three years of poor management (we have had 4 managers in that time)

Seems half the squad were told Tuesday they'll be moving to Gosford next season. If they're lucky. And they sulked. Majok with a silent j thankfully got on with it by kicking balls indicating the size of backyard he wants.

    OK...I'm watching the Phoenix game..

At the start of this season...man for man...would you have rated them as so much stronger than WSW?

With an A League level rookie coach???

I still don't know half their players (not that THAT counts for much, I know). A few have played together for years...its true. Krishna is fantastic...more than ever beore...but others who were considered has-beens 5 years ago are firing (like David Williams) Some,  like Durante, are getting long in the tooth.

What's behind their performances and place on the ladder...so much better than us??

    Let's see:

    • They didn't hire an AFL fitness coach and ended up with way to many soft tissue injuries.
    • They had a goal keeper and a goal scorer.
    • Their main CB wasn't injured most of the season, they didn't forget to sign an injury replacement, and they didn't field makeshift lineups all season.
    • They didn't have two kids run midfield, and had two squaddies playing CBs for most of the season.
    • They didn't start the season with toothless wingers.
    • They didn't start the season with too few senior players, had too many of those being injured or not up too scratch, and they weren't forced to play up to 5 youth players in the most congested phase of the season.
    • They had a coach who signed players, while our coach mainly worked with what he inherited.
    • The majority of their squad wasn't told prior to their Rd 26 game that they would not be at the club two weeks later.

In a nutshell, Krishna scored the goals that Riera didn't score, their GK did the opposite of Janjetovic, and their defense sat tight all season. That's the difference between 8th and 5th spot.

Not sure if the cameras showed it, but Roly stepped up to take the pen last night, ABJcame over and took the ball off him. I thought they were gonna argue over it. ABJ then called Bridge over and gave it to him. We may have conflicting views about how he played last night but this was one small positive in a terrible away performance...

    Basically what FCB said

They have a decent defence, an excellent goalkeeper, a solid midfield and a striker who is golden boot

Vedran alone has litterally thrown 12 points away this season

A manager of his quality should be able to coach in ANY league......... anywhere.......... and adapt.

He's getting paid top $'s for a reason. All we got was more of the same and the same excuses week in week out. The players didn't do this or the players didn't do that.....etc etc etc....rinse and repeat.

As I said at the start of the season what he achieved elsehere with other clubs is irrelevant, it's what he achieves with WSW that matters. He's achieved nothing this season....we have gone backwards on the ladder.  He has improved some players we have and and signed a couple who put, in but he still has to accept some of the blame.

If it takes a massive cleanout to right what is wrong then so be it. It appears he will be given the opportunity to do just that. For the sake of the club I hope he succeeds because another season like the last 3 is unacceptable.

80% of the team have been told they are not required for next season. The other 20% are injured.

Must be frustrating for a coach to come up with a game plan and put out players to win a game that have a meh attitude and cbf.

ALeague refs don't help. Their first 2 goals came off fouls that weren't there. Then he allows AB10 to get hacked all game and waves play on.

Out midfield has been dire all season. When you have to put in injury replacement from NPL2 and Serie C, what do you expect will happen?

    Hopefully for the last time.

I can't imagine how good it would be to have a team where the reverse is happening....where you actually know 80% of the team from one season to the next....and 20% of new blood is being speculated about in the off season.

I understand the sentiment but it won't happen I'm afraid.........especially with the young guys who will most likely have one or two good seasons with us then be snapped up for bigger and better clubs overseas with better pay packets and you would never want to deny them the chance if it comes along.

I think loyalty to a club these days means something different to what it used to.  If a player trains hard, turns up to play, puts in on the pitch and conducts themselves with a mature, respectable and professional manner and attitude then I would class that as being loyal to the club and fans.

I put players like Shinji, Brendan Santalab and Mark Bridge in that category. Even though they left to play elsewhere the time they were with the club they put in and tthey conducted themselves with respect for the jersey and the club....thats loyalty. I'm sure there are other players who have played for us that fit that category as well.

That is, in part, the answer to your earlier question re: comparing Nix with WSW.  They have a squad who are essentially consistent. We ahven't had a consistent squad since about S2. Popa changed players like his underwear.  Gumby refused to use players last year who would have made a difference - there was other stuff as well, I know.  This year, of out mostly 1st 11, who was there last year?  Who was there the year before?  It will once again be who are these players next year?  Hopefully, Babbel will bring the right players, keep the right ones and allow us to build a consistent sqaud for the next few seasons.  Whilst there needs to/will be turnover each season, the extent of ours has been deplorable.  It seems like Popa was experimenting with us for 5 years to work out what he wanted/needed.  Made the mistakes from S3... and then learned enough to get it right somewhere else.

Gumby didn't like Popa's squad and changed a lot and we had a completely misshaped, unbalanced, inexperienced squad when Babbel came.  I think he has steadied a really unseaworthy ship, learned the realities of a provincial league with strange parameters and ordinary officiating.  The challenge for him is to build a team who is competitive and balanced, can work together, keep them injury-free and stamp WSW authority on the league once more.

Reality, Sonar, the fans don't want loyalty and players who try.  They want the team to win at all costs and stuff the rest.  Listen to the complaints of us on here.  There are a few loyal players who do their best but are assessed as ordinary and need to be gotten rid of.  The players you named succeeded pretty well but a loyal player who tries his guts out but isn't seen as effective as a Santalab bruising opposition with border-line red card tackles (and scoring a few goals!) is ridiculed endlessly.  When a team is losing there is no loyalty from nost of the fans.

I disagree.....Disloyalty is when players who get paid a wage to perform a job squib it when it matters most.....on the pitch...........and this season there are examples aplenty to go around. Disloyalty is when a player gets subbed off for a poor performance and throws a hissy fit.....tosses away the jersey and gets told to gagf. Disloyalty is players like a professional goal keeper making errors a junior wouldn't been excused for .  Fans can aacept a player having a bad day. What they can't accept is a bad day every game.

    Yes to all this!

And the first part of your post  is what I hope for ....sometime...in the near future. The sort of consistency that the successful A League clubs seem to be increasingly able to find.

Even if 80% of players  carrying over from one season to the next is unrealistic, for the reasons Sonar outlined, the reverse (keeping 20% and ditching the other 80% - which is about to happen...AGAIN) is soul destroying.

TBH...it's easy to see WSW as having gone from the club any player would've loved to play for, to one you'd want to steer clear of as a player.

Because the most consistent thing about us is that we haven't been able to build a consistent team with any degree of loyalty flowing in both directions, since Popa worked a miracle in the preseason before our first ever season.

I'd better shut up now....because I'm depressing myself.

It's more a matter of holding on to good players, rotating squaddies is not an issue.

Club and Popa were pissing about when it came to pay rises for andreu an Alberto. We signed Pinatares and Borda instead, and Jumpei for Castelen. We watched as ikonomidis and antonis signed for others, and ended up with Herd and Fitzgerald. We let vidosic go. The list goes on.

MB has never seen such a poor group of players all his professional life. That'll change, and we all can take comfort from that.

Tbh our season was over after the halfway mark. We had a glimmer of hope for finals but in reality we don;t deserve to be there anyway. My criticisms of the manager doesn't mean I want him gone but with his pedigree I would of expected better returns than what we have achieved. According to some experts here the quality of the players is secondary because a good manager makes do with what he has. Well clearly that is not the case here.

I give him kudos for bringing in the young guys who will benefit from the games this season. Duke and Yeboah have been ok signings but I'm a bit meh about AB10 and haven't seen enough of Zeigler to make a firm judgement. I think most of us just want a competitive team that puts in week in week out.

    Regardless..........I'll always be......:wanderturtle:
