Wanderers Destroyed By Wooden Spoon Mariners

    mack

In Gosford tonight the Western Sydney Wanderers have been demolished 3-1 by the last placed Central Coast Mariners, and were lucky that a second half red card to Kye Rowles helped keep the scoreline remotely respectable.

National Youth League goalkeeper Jack Greenwood made his A-League debut for the Wanderers due to a keeper injury crisis that saw Vedran Janjetovic, Danijel Nizic and Nick Suman all out of the squad. For the Mariners it was Adam Pearce taking the place of Ben Kennedy between the sticks. Giancarlo Gallifuoco's good substitute appearance in the Sydney Derby saw him elevated to the starting lineup for the visitors.

Brendan Hamill helped setup the first goal for the Mariners. After giving away a foul deep on the flank, he then proceeded to pull down Matt Simon as he was making his attacking run, giving the Central Coast a free kick 19 yards out from goal dead centre. Matt Simon used his Captain's privileged to take the kick and a 10 meter long run up. With an inevitable power drive at goal coming up, the Wanderers wall jumped up split like the Grand Canyon giving Simon a gaping hole to fire through, perhaps taking a slight deflection to give Greenwood no chance. It was dreadful defending, anyone could see that Simon was never going to attempt a deft chip over the wall, they should have lined all 10 outfield players up shoulder to shoulder and stood their ground.

Simon had a brace just after half-time through a questionable foul against Greenwood. With a soft cross played into the middle, Greenwood rose to punch away and made a mess, collecting Jordan Murry with a tap to the face. It was the type of 'foul' that referees in the A-League simply see as a hazard of playing football, but tonight for the first time the referee decided it needed to be punished with a penalty and a yellow card. No other referee will give a similar foul & penalty for another 5 years. It simply shows the complete lack of consistency that A-League referees have in their decision making process. Simon blasted the penalty to his right, Greenwood getting a slight touch but not enough to deflect the powerful shot wide.

The Mariners were in dreamland as Kye Rowles scored the 3rd in the 55th minute. From a corner a basic cross to the near post saw Tarek Elrich misjudge the flight, letting Rowles have a free header. The Wanderers didn't have anyone on the far post and as usual, it costs the side a goal when it should have been easily cleared away.

Mark Bridge came on for his 250th A-League match and made an immediate impact from the penalty spot. After scramble in the penalty area, Rashid Mahazi was bought down by Jacob Meling for a penalty to the Wanderers. Bridge powered his strike into the top corner past Pearce in goals. It was also at this point that Brendan Hamill suffered a concussion when he was poleaxed by Pearce just prior to the penalty award.

Rowles put his side's command of the game in danger shortly after with his disgraceful 71st minute challenge. Coming in hard and fast with a two footed studs up lunge on Alexander Baumjohann. Rowles collected the Wanderers play-maker in a challenge that was up there as one of the worst in the history of the league, and Baumjohann was lucky to avoid having his ankle or leg broken by the disgusting challenge. Referee Adam Kersey completely missed the foul from a mere 4 meters away, waving play on and only after the intervention of the VAR did he eventually pull out a well deserved red card.

The card helped the Wanderers regain control of the match but it did precious little to assist them in further damaging the deficit. Abraham Majok having the best chance deep into stoppage time but when a simple pass into the net was required he tried to blast the ball and skied it. Combined with early results the Wanderers have secured an 8th place finish in the A-League, one worse than under the Foxe/Gombau leadership.

The Wanderers play their final game of the season next week against Melbourne Victory at the Sydney Olympic Stadium, Homebush on Saturday the 27th of April at 7:50PM.

Tonight we learned that a couple of players are definite "no's" for next season.

    1. Baumjohan - pussys out of the wall, just sad. Goodbye.

    2. Majok - dude... That complete lack of composure. Goodbye and good luck.

Mariners played well, we lack leaders.

Babbel in the press conference said he has now talked to players about them not getting new contracts.

Did the captain walk off uninjured with 5 to go to balance the ledger back in the Mariners favour with no subs available. Did his feelings have a feeling. I'm only here for the badge on the front of jumper not the surname on the back. Insipid and spineless performance.

in his defense he made the same impact off the pitch that he did on the pitch :P

I think Baumjohann's capacity to argue for a big fat marquee contract is over after that performance

95+ minutes: 0 goals, 0 assists against the 10th placed team in the league

Sure, he did some flashy passes (anyone see that beautiful 60m crossfield ball to Kamau near the end of the game? How about that perfectly weighted pass to Duke in the first half before Duke's shot?) but I think like Mooy and Roly, if he's being deployed as #10 but not doing anything, it's time to play deeper as a DM.

I'd say Baumjohann's capacity for asking for a contract at all is over. What a ******* waste of money he is. He makes a handful of flashy passes but that's the bare minimum an attacking midfielder should be doing. He doesn't track back, he doesn't get into position to take good shots from outside the area, his set pieces have been okay at best.

Good luck to Western United or whoever wants to pay him next year.

sad thing tonight that was close to our starting XI. Might as well let them all go and end the season. Next week needs to have youth and those who have a future with us. Be lucky we get 5k against victory, if the players don;t show up don't expect the fans to either.

Baumjohann was the best player on the park for the Wanderers today...he’s a #10. Shouldnt need to track back as much. I don’t think he should be on marquee wages but easily our most creative outlet today

Just got back home and watched the red card tackle. That was a leg breaker...still cannot understand what the Mariners we're complaining about.

Glad you guys got a little joy out of an even more miserable season than we've had, Middy.

It's a shame it was as a result of such an insipid WSW performance as it was.

used to like heading up the coast for this away game but tonight's total lack of anything resembling atmosphere has me not wanting to bother anymore.

Baumjohann as our best player tonight shows our squads quality is scraping at the bottom of the barrel.

[Mariners] were running and fighting, and that was enough today to beat us.

[The red card] was an Attentat {= assassination attempt).

[Hamill] said he can't see the ball anymore.

We have to do a lot. Most of the players have been here two years now, and we finish 7th, 8th, so we have to change something. [...] We have to bring quality and especially mentality in.

We seem to be hearing the same stuff from him as we heard at the very start...and watching the same shoulder shrugging and head scratching.

I'll leave it at that....... but................sighhhhhh.

I feel there's been some important life leasons learnt this season. Like, just when you think you've reached your lowest point, there's an even lower point just around the corner.

Might be a great idea to make mental health counseling service a standard part of the member pack.

Totally dumbfounded.  Last week we held our own with SFC and could even have come away with a win (Majok's late miss?)  Sydney go on to defeat Perth, albeit a Perth without a few of their regular starting line up.  We play virtually the same team against the wooden spooners and get played off the park.  The only time we looked like dominating was after they went down to ten men.  No sooner were the numbers equal after Hamill went off, and it was Mariners who were back on top. Go figure!

    • i understand people want it as close to the original as possible but i dont get the hate for removing the trophy girls in crash team racing nitro fueled, i am so excited for that game, pretty obsessed with crash atm even if it was insanely difficult at times
    • I did the whole metro thing today. A nice sunny day out on my own. Drove to Tallawong. Parked. Queued up with the throngs. Caught the Metro to Chatswood, and then the snail train double decker to Wynyard. Then spent a few hours around Darling Harbour and the newly built Darling Quarter (where the old Entertainment Centre was. Gee how that area has changed!! I had a sensational lunch in a little indoor food court in Chinatown that I never even knew existed until I stumbled across it today. Packed to the hilt, with probably 12-15 little Asian food outlets of all types. A really buzzing place. The Metro is ******* impressive. Fast, smooth and efficient. Sure there were some teething problems today, but over 100 000 people used it on its first day. The govt and those at north west metro handled everything so well. Huge crowds at Chatswood were dispersed quickly upon each train arrival. Don't believe any of the negative shite on social media platforms from today. It's an impressive system and will be a huge bonus to us in the Hills once it is up and fully operational (about 3-6 months).
