    Wanderers Ease Past Bonnyrigg

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers are through to a quarter final against Melbourne City following their 2-1 win against Bonnyrigg tonight in the FFA Cup.

After a 10 minute feeling out period, the Wanderers mounted their first serious attack on the Bonnyrigg goal and it paid dividends. Roly Bonevacia combined down the left flank with Alexander Baumjohann with a neat 1-2 pass that setup Baumjohann to score his first goal in Wanderers colours with a nice stab toward goal. Bonnyrigg were limited to chances on the counter or from set pieces and they failed to trouble the Wanderers defence, the first 45 ending 1-0 to the Wanderers.

2 minutes into the second half Roly Bonevacia & Baumjohann broke through the Bonnyrigg defence, unfortunately for the Wanderers Baumjohann had strayed marginally offside, and he mis-controlled the pass in any case.

On 55 minutes Brendan Hamill looked certain to score from a corner. Baumjohann fired in a hard cross that was flicked on by a Bonnyrigg defender, Hamill had made a good run to the far post and from 2 yards out Hamill connected with a side foot volley that on second viewing appeared to have been turned onto the crossbar by the goalkeeper.

Bonnyrigg had two chances in quick successful, the best coming by Peterson turning Ziegler inside out until he came across the path of Risdon & Hamill, forcing the attacking onto the by line before his shot went straight into the arms of Nizic.

A dubious free kick lead to Bonnyrigg's equaliser. 20 odd yards out from goal, Tynan Diaz curled in the free kick up and over the wall and crashed past the glacial Danjiel Nizic, who has been the Wanderers worst player in these two FFA Cup games this season.

The bouncing ball in the Bonnyrigg penalty area near lead to a second for the Wanderers, as Riera & Baumjohann combined for the attacking midfielder to strike on ball, only to see it saved & dribble out behind for a corner. The second goal finally came from the resulting corner. After the initial cross was cleared out to the wing, Patrick Ziegler made the goal with steadfast ball control on the edge of the area, his low cross into the middle found Hamill who sliced a quality low header onto the base of the far post.

While the result wasn't the strongest, the Wanderers dealt with Bonnyrigg in open play and had enough quality in attack to run out the 90 minutes victorious. Going into the Quarter Final with 7 other teams with the draw as follows:
Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers
    Bentleigh Greens vs Heidelberg
    Apia Leichardt vs Adelaide United
    Avondale FC vs Sydney FC

Much better than against Helletic but still a work in progress. I hope the Nizic and Roll experiment is over.

Good to see the lumberjack in action. Looking forward to him being fit. Also nice to see a centre back pairing work well. Roly is wasteful for his pedigree.

    Two Germans look good

Baccus still gives the ball away too much

The keeper is terrible he can’t actually kick a ball straight (he should consider afl)

It was cold out there tonight especially when a security guard accidently knocks a beer over me.

at $10 a cevapi roll it had to be up there as one of the best and made sure they packed that roll with all the onion/cabbage sauce and what ever else they had on offer!

Allowing Gombau to make signings was a big mistake. Could have had 3 spots to play with. Although I do like Kamau! I would really consider a mutual termination or two to free up a quality LW and CM.

Vedran can’t get himself ready quick enough. Keeper looked too slow to react to the free kick. Distribution was terrible

Still better to win ugly than lose.

On the squad issue, we still have one squad spot available to an Australian. If Ziegler gets his Aussie passport as I heard him say today on DFS in about 2 months, we could get a foreign DM or winger outside the cap who is a free agent now or save the spot for the January transfer window.

As well as Vedran, we still have Bridge injured as well.

Not sure why Markus didn't sub anyone tonight.

The match officials names were not published. Can anyone tell me who the referee in the middle was?

Referee was Stephen Lucas according the FFA website: https://www.theffacup.com.au/match/bonnyrigg-white-eagles-fc-v-western-sydney-wanderers-fc-ffa-cup-29-08-2018/1015429#!/stats

Should have been at least one red for BWE, for the tackle on Risdon. The one on Nizic at the end was too far away to see properly.

Anyone else hope the reason why we leak goals against NPL sides is because we are charitable?

Last time I saw one if Lucas's games was when there was controversy in adelaide. He should have sent a player off for an elbow to the head and not awarded a penalty. He was dropped for the season after that game.

The logic was that there aren’t that many decent Australian players to sign so take them when they are available.

For mine his (gombau) signings are all individually decent but collectively maybe not quite the level we need. Kamau could be really good, although he didn’t kick ion at City. We haven’t seen O Doherty yet. Fitzgerald is decent enough

we are a marquee level player short and given we have filled the foreign quota I can’t see where it will come from (at least until Jan)

Yeah the price was steep but the quality was there; couldn't believe that they were still selling them after full time !!

The #10 was great. Can’t remember anothe game - if ever - when we created so many openings through the middle with neat interplay. Was a reminder of the Vidosic-Nichols-Bridge-Castelen year at its best (and let’s not forget the great Shannon Cole who was a part of goal #5 against Brisbane).

Everyone else seemed to grow in confidence around him too, knowing we could break them down. Amazing what one creative dude can do.

    But we gotta finish!

He looks like the real deal doesn’t he. Players like that always look like they have more time on the ball than everybody else.

Aussie Pat looks good to, carried the ball forward and played the ball out from the back rather than sideways and back.

    Some positives from last night

The main negative was took me so long to get out there that I missed out on seeing people and also watched the first goal on a phone while queuing to get patted down

The last 12 months or so, I feel we’ve become very vulnerable on free kicks. That’s another one we’ve conceded...

    Some thoughts:

Our midfield was bullied by both Darwin/Bonno.

We went long so many times.

The number #10 looks the goods.

Hammill has grown immensely over the last 18 months.

    Roly shouldnt be starting.

    Nizic..... amateur

We need a la Rocca style player in the middle to get stuck in, we are too nice

    The Bacci aren’t that player

Fitz was ok Roly was terrible lost the ball 9/10 times.... That number 22 player (RW against Llorente) for Bonnyrigg is a really good player. Skills were better than most of our players, flicks; one on ones he did everything. Probably more skillful than most of the A-league from the 90 minutes I saw.

I think in terms of atmosphere, stadium and food - this will be the peak game of the season.

And ABJ learned quickly last night that Australian referees aren't going to protect him from getting the treatment.

When he and Riera get on the same wavelength, we will see some quality stuff.

I heard the blokes behind me at the game say that Vedran is out for the season and we are looking for a replacement first keeper. I can debunk this rumour. I know Vedrans weight trainer, and i asked him about his progress. quoted exact response "Nothing we cant sort out mate he will be right for the season start all good" .. thank god for that!

Is Roly fit, he seems to linger too long?  We are still not taking our chances and agree with the comment above we are a marquee short of challenging. Smurfs have an excellent signing in that Ajax player (if he stays fit). Read an article where Benitez was saying he was the most skillful payer at Newcastle just not robust enough. Should kill it in the HAL. With Honda at Vic and City with a full season for Bruno, I think at the moment we are realistically looking to challenge for 4th.

Hopefully we don't see him on the left again. I think its centre mid for him or bench for Alex gets tired. Early days of course but i agree we are looking at about 4th.

He did, he brought on a fullback to play RW, when he had LS & JS on the bench.

I put it down to a lack of confidence in the available cattle.

A number of the lads expected to be in the u19 Young Socceroos training camp, weren't selected
