  • Wanderers Fade Out In Newcastle

    mack

Newcastle Stadium resembled an emergency ward for the Wanderers as injuries & heat saw them fade once again in the second half with Dimitri Petratos cancelling out a first half goal from Mark Bridge to see both sides take a point this evening.

With Newcastle Jets losing their marquee midfielder Ronald Vargas to a horror injury, the Wanderers were deserved favourites coming into the game, and the early play bore this out. Having taking full control of the game, the Wanderers eventually broke through for the opening goal. Nikolai Topor-Stanley's error deep in his own half saw him give up a corner and from the set piece his former team pounced. Jumpei Kusukami turned on the ball & shot at goal, the ball bounced off the back of a Jets defender and fell into the path of Mark Bridge who fired in a right footed first time strike that curled into the back of the net.

Over the course of the game the Wanderers were battered & bruised by the strong Newcastle defenders. Kearyn Baccus left the field with a stomach bug, perhaps exacerbated by the heat, Raul Llorente took a heavy knock from Nigel Boogaard that saw him practically incapable of running, Chris Herd left with a potential concussion after meeting Topor-Stanley's shoulder, and the end results was that Hayden Foxe was forced into playing Jonathan Aspro out of position as a holding defensive midfielder.

Newcastle grew into the contest after their opponents failed to make any major clear cut chances in the second half, and Dimitri Petratos pulled the game level in the 68th minute. Newcastle bombed the ball long, with Roy O'Donovan meeting a cutback with a fierce strike on goal that was aimed straight at the keeper. Janjetovic spilled the ball back toward the penalty spot, Cornthwaite decided to run back to goal & Aspro couldn't beat Petratos to the loose ball and he hammered it under the keeper with his left foot.

From there it looked like there was only going to be one winner, with Newcastle having the wind in their sails while the Wanderers were out of position & out of ideas. Roly Bonevacia had a dismal game off the bench, the service to Oriol Riera was like Cityrail on a public holiday with random trackwork added to the mix, Jumpei provided an assist but otherwise his & Cejudo's flicks & tricks did little to promote the attack into dangerous positions and once again the fitness of the team was lacking as they fell apart around the hour mark.

The new manager cannot come soon enough, and whoever does take over could quite easily decide to make a clean sweep of the Wanderers current coaching staff, as those who didn't follow Popovic to Turkey appear to have turned a potential top 2 side into a mid-table one through poor preparation both tactically & physically.

    Vedran missing Kalac?

Whatever, played 3 games in 9 days, I'll take the scrappy draw.everybody looked gassed..hoping the long rest until the Victory game on Monday rejuvenates the squad.

Should have put them to bed in the first half, we were all over them. In the second we were basically playing with ten men, AND lost two of our midfielders, so I'll take the draw in the end.

Jumpei has looked good this year, hopefully he doesn't fade away.

The Sotirio sub actually made sense...if Sotirio was a decent player. His pace was sorely needed at that stage, but you just know he's not going to ever deliver an end product, so you may as well put Santa on instead.

Still think we have a pretty good team here, two rampaging full backs, great midfield, very dangerous forward line. Just need to capitalise on our dominant periods more, same as it ever was.

Vedran was doing this last year as well. He's just not that great a keeper. He's in the same tier as Redmayne. We could've had Vukovic on a long term deal but Popa's ego ruined that.

6 points from the first 4 games. Can one of you statistic aficionados let us know how that rates in terms of starts to the season for us? Season 1 is the only one I can recall (4 points from the first 4).

should have done better today. slow off the mark in the second half, and their goal really put them on the front foot.

Game against MV is huge now, especially if they get nothing today from CCM.

Yeah, seems so. After seeing how **** Redmayne was for us any keeper was going to look better at that time. Guess it's sunken in now that he's just an average A-League keeper who has the occasional big game. Still thinks he looks worse than usual. Gets beat pretty much every time.

Now that Popovic is gone and the friction isn't there, can we have Shabow back ?

    S1 - 4 points (1 draw 1 win)
    S2 - 8 points (2 draws, 2 wins)
    S3 - 1 Point (3 losses, 1 draw)
    S4 - 4 points (1 draw, 1 win)
    S5 - 5 points (2 draws, 1 win)
    S6 - 6 points (3 draws, 1 win)

We definitely lack a no. 10. I think Nico would have been great in this team (although obviously we probably wouldn't have Cejudo/Riera then so the point is possibly moot).

I think Herd can do the La Rocca role and add a bit more going forward.

Idk, i thought vedran saved the season for us last season. We wouldn't have scraped into 6th if we'd still had redmayne. Not to say he hasnt made a few mistakes. I can see that. But i still have confidence in him.

I'm so sick of this cycle of looking like one of the best teams in the A-league for the first half and then pissing it away in the end. It's been a recurring theme since S2...

Saved our ******* asses in two derbies. 100% saved our season along with Antonis.

We lack a La Rocca type in the middle. Somebody to kick lumps out of the opposition.

also worry we lack a number 10

After Ward got his yellow ticket in the 44th (?) I think he had to tone it down

Didnt help he got smashed by Topor Stanley after as well

I cannot understand why any of us would "settle for the draw". We threw away the Derby and did the same this afternoon. These feel like loses given we were goals up away against opponents. We screamed into the ear of every player post match that walked past the RBB that we now need the new manager and not the pantomime we are still being dished up. Management needs to now be held accountable for games that we should be winning. How far this slide and for those that have their Popa out wish they should be doubly agrieved by the rubbish served up today.

    Looked so faded,

    thank god for Vedran although

we should of rested the majority of the squad that played today

it may of payed off simply because someone  like sotiro came on brought a lot of energy food for thought rotation...praying on no serious injury’s

    please please bring in Josip

Coulda had Melling Lachlan Scott majok sotiro Santalab lustica Clisby in the squad instead of playing baccus with food poisoning...and others with knocks yada yada

Cejudo is not a true scheming no.10. We have a good team but I'd have rather kept Antonis to Nico.

Proper coach please or the season will be one of frustration.

We just never put teams away. It doesn't seem to be in our DNA.

    Tho shalt always struggle. ...

Cejudo was fantastic in the first game but hasn't matched it in the following games. Hopefully it's just too many quick games in succession and no time to recover from the countless times he was hecked.

With a full week to recover I hope he will show us his skill against MV

Well that's not going to do any good, they aren't the ones doing the recruiting.

We are giving up poor goals every week.

Llorente is great going forward but quite a few of them are on him. Stood off brillante in derby and got caught on his heels for cross against both jets and perth letting winger in behind him.

Janjetovic has cost us too. Drop against ccm was hideous and pushing ball back into the middle of the area yesterday wasn't  awesome either. Thats 4 points dropped right there.

I love corny but he was out of position for the goal too. Can't  let striker goal side in that situation.

Aspro against adelaide too - less said the better.

Fitness, slow passing etc all factors too but i reckon individual errors have been  the biggest problem.
