  • Wanderers Fade Out In Newcastle

    mack

Newcastle Stadium resembled an emergency ward for the Wanderers as injuries & heat saw them fade once again in the second half with Dimitri Petratos cancelling out a first half goal from Mark Bridge to see both sides take a point this evening.

With Newcastle Jets losing their marquee midfielder Ronald Vargas to a horror injury, the Wanderers were deserved favourites coming into the game, and the early play bore this out. Having taking full control of the game, the Wanderers eventually broke through for the opening goal. Nikolai Topor-Stanley's error deep in his own half saw him give up a corner and from the set piece his former team pounced. Jumpei Kusukami turned on the ball & shot at goal, the ball bounced off the back of a Jets defender and fell into the path of Mark Bridge who fired in a right footed first time strike that curled into the back of the net.

Over the course of the game the Wanderers were battered & bruised by the strong Newcastle defenders. Kearyn Baccus left the field with a stomach bug, perhaps exacerbated by the heat, Raul Llorente took a heavy knock from Nigel Boogaard that saw him practically incapable of running, Chris Herd left with a potential concussion after meeting Topor-Stanley's shoulder, and the end results was that Hayden Foxe was forced into playing Jonathan Aspro out of position as a holding defensive midfielder.

Newcastle grew into the contest after their opponents failed to make any major clear cut chances in the second half, and Dimitri Petratos pulled the game level in the 68th minute. Newcastle bombed the ball long, with Roy O'Donovan meeting a cutback with a fierce strike on goal that was aimed straight at the keeper. Janjetovic spilled the ball back toward the penalty spot, Cornthwaite decided to run back to goal & Aspro couldn't beat Petratos to the loose ball and he hammered it under the keeper with his left foot.

From there it looked like there was only going to be one winner, with Newcastle having the wind in their sails while the Wanderers were out of position & out of ideas. Roly Bonevacia had a dismal game off the bench, the service to Oriol Riera was like Cityrail on a public holiday with random trackwork added to the mix, Jumpei provided an assist but otherwise his & Cejudo's flicks & tricks did little to promote the attack into dangerous positions and once again the fitness of the team was lacking as they fell apart around the hour mark.

The new manager cannot come soon enough, and whoever does take over could quite easily decide to make a clean sweep of the Wanderers current coaching staff, as those who didn't follow Popovic to Turkey appear to have turned a potential top 2 side into a mid-table one through poor preparation both tactically & physically.

Would be kinda funny if we draw all our games except one of the derbies, which we win, and we become the invincibles.

And finish 7th - yeah hilarious

Overall, a pretty good away day on Sunday.

Caught the train replacement bus up, had some lunch with a relo and had a quick dip at the ocean baths before heading to the game. March through the back of the stadium was amazing, RBB on song throughout and the sun beaming down onto the eastern stand giving me a good tan. A few Newy lads started having a go at the RBB in the 2nd half, which prompted us to chant the 'We can't hear Newcastle Sing' which backfired, as they then scored moments later. LOL

Game was pretty 'meh'. Started off well, good goal from the King but after that, it was a pretty lacklustre performance, from both sides. That young dude Champness looks quality, someone we should look to recruit in the future.

Also, @Unlimited did you catch the bus home at around 8pm from Broadmedow? :ninja: I think I might have been sitting in the seat in front of you. I saw the WSF scarf as I was behind you at Central and the person fitted your description :ninja:

Very disappointing bus turnout - wasn't anywhere near the overnight party bus for the grand final two years ago

I have a feeling the top 4 won’t change much we may be in with a semi final with Newcastle we need to solve the manager issue ASAP perhaps play a more direct shooting game with an extra striker

Yeah that Champness fella looks the business.

Was on the Roar youth roster last season but no room for him their.

Apparently spent time in Portugal training.

Forget the result, I’m still spewing the sun finally set (and I could see again) literally as the referee blew full time 😑

Probably best not to see our second half performance

I don't buy the "we're not fit enough" stuff.

We've heard talk all along of the fitness requirements here. Risdon is apparently 7 or 8 kilos lighter than at Perth. Many visa players or returning Socceroos have commented on the difficult training and how it has helped them with fitness.

I put it down to a) not having a decent backup in midfield, and b) losing control of the games.

Even Baccus, who is playing great, is still only into his second full season as a starter. It's difficult for seasoned pros to control the tempo of a match, to wrest momentum back when it's lost. To expect Baccus and Herd - who has battled injuries etc his whole career which must make it hard to keep pushing in teh second half - to do this is a tough ask.

Despite the huge strides made in recruitment this season, we have too many CBs and not enough DMs. Maybe Thwaite should be seen as a fill-in there and Aspro on the bench when Thwaite is fit?

Plus we go at a million miles an hour in the first half trying to kill the game rather than pacing the game for the full 90 + Stoppage time
