  • Wanderers Hold Onto Derby Point

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have survived a tense second half and a comeback from Sydney FC to take a point from the Sydney Football Stadium.

The visiting Wanderers started the game extremely strongly, going on the front foot and stunning the crowd in just the 3rd minute. With Josh Risdon getting past his marker, he ran toward the penalty area, then aimed a cross at the head of marquee striker Oriol Riera, who hit a superb header into the far top corner.

After half an hour it was another header from the Wanderers that doubled their advantage. From a free kick, the ball was swung in toward the back post, and was met by Brendan Hamill who sent the ball crashing into the back of the net to the delight of the away supporters, who once again outnumbered and out sang the blue covered fans in the 'home' end.

Just before the break the VAR once again rose it's ugly head, as it failed to overturn a Sydney FC penalty "earned" by David Carney. After getting through on goal, Carney threw out his arm and smashed Chris Herd in the face, followed by Carney diving to the turf. Unsurprisingly Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot immediately, and the VAR failed to do it's job by overturning the penalty on the grounds that Carney had committed a foul first. Bobo hit the penalty cleanly, with Janjetovic diving the wrong way.

Gillett was the best on the ground for Sydney FC, as they miraculously ended the game without conceding a single yellow card, despite their players racking up impressive foul counts. Bobo in particular whacked Cornthwaite all night long but drew nothing more than a foul, Matt Simon came on late, and hit Janjetovic late with an elbow & wasn't punished beyond the foul, Brosque & Wilkshire both scythed down their opponents on multiple occasions. It was another pathetic, biased performance that benefited a team who are already one of the better teams in the competition.

Sydney FC continued their comeback in the second half, and the Wanderers threw away the lead after failing to take advantage of possession deep in the Sydney FC half. When Kearyn Baccus lost the ball on the edge of the area, Sydney FC broke quickly, Baccus & Herd both failed to stop Ninkovic from passing on, Brosque found Bobo, with Brillante running onto a lateral ball, he fired into the legs of Llorente. The ball took a wicked deflection that wrong footed  Janjetovic to make it 2-2.

Matt Simon was introduced late in the game to provide his usual routine of kicking the opposition black & blue, and thankfully for the Wanderers he clearly hadn't been spending his time practising his heading, as he received a cross in the dying stages that any A-League level forward should have buried.

Hayden Foxe did his reputation no damage, but in the end he failed to adjust to the scope of the game, both after going 2-0 up, and again late on when Sydney FC were in danger of over-running his side. Barring a very quick signing of a new manager, he will need to look at his second half tactics when he takes on Adelaide United in the mid-week FFA Cup Semi-Final.

Did Brosque get booked for the kickout at Risdon (?) during the second half? He didn’t even try to hide the fact he wasn’t going for the ball.

Apparently he did according to the A-League website. Didn't look like it however.

On the bright side. Lots of changes to our team this year, entirely new front 4, two new fullbacks etc. We are only three games in when it clicks we seriously hammer some teams. That sydney team apart from 2 positions was same as last years they are way further on in terms of forming combinations etc

I disagree with this Sydney side being not much different to last season. Look at the losses:

Vuckovic, Grant (injury), Ibini, Holosko, Dimitrijevic, Jurman

All those players were massive contributors last season (even the ones off the bench).

    Who have they gained:

Redmayne, Wilkshere and some Polish guy who is now injured.

An aging Carney has been promoted to starting line up on the wing. Then you have an aging Luke Wilkshere as right back. The defence looks a bit suspect compared to last season with no Vuckovic. If you rough up Ninkovic a bit then Bobo and Brosque struggle without the service.

I think we worked out how to play them. It is just our ineptness didn't get us the points. If they continue with this team I believe they will begin to lose a few games. For long parts of the game last night they looked very ordinary. Nowhere near last season anyway.

Ok then, therefore we should have beaten them by at least 5 goals last night.... as as you say they are a lot weaker than last year and we are stronger than when we beat them 1-0.

So that is what you got out of me saying that I thought their team was weaker than last season?

Pump up the Ham, pump it up, pump it up!

Good to know that the Hamill of old in the ACL wasn't just a mirage. He does have great games in him, not even talking about the goal. I still think Aspro is a better long term bet though.

Cejudo, what a player. Obviously plenty of skills, but made some absolutely perfect crucial tackles as well, and not afraid to get stuck in.

Really all we need to do is get him/Risdon/Llorente in good enough positions about ten times a game to put a decent cross in. Riera will score enough.

All things considered, happy with that result at this stage of the season.

    My highlights from last night:

    - Nothing about the football because everything I wanted to say has already been said. No need for me to be boring you all by repeating the same stuff. So, here is some random match day observations....

    - The fact that David Gallop and Steven Lowy were sitting in the private box directly behind and just above the RBB. The look of astonishment on Gallops face at the reaction of the active section when we scored our first and 2nd goals was priceless. You'd think it was his first time seeing active support in this country (******* idiot). He loved it. At one stage I saw him pointing down at something in the RBB and talking into Lowy's ear.

    - Adam Peacock continually filming our active support on his phone.

    - The random "**** the Victory" chant directed towards Archie Thompson at half time. Watching him laughing and encouraging us was quite humorous.

    - Archie Thompson also doing the Poznan!!

    - The RBB/Club organised express train which left Parra station at 5.45 PM. Well done to all involved. It's a great way to travel to the match and join the march.

    - 1 flare on the march.

    My lowlights:

    - The result. Not going on to claim victory after being up 0-2

    - The douche bag station announcer at Central after the match welcoming fans from ESFC and the Western Sydney Warriors to the platforms. Cue cynical laughter by both sets of fans.

    - Robbie Slater's appallingly biased commentary. This is a derby. Surely Fox can allocate Simon Hill and Andy Harper to these big matches and leave the dregs to lesser games.

Forgot about this! Brilliant. Also brilliant was seeing Lowy and Gallop retreat into their safe space after copping it in the first half.

I’m not meaning that they aren’t weaker than last year, they clearly are at keeper and right back, and as you guys point out without Ibini (who I had forgot about) they have very little off the bench. I’d hate to have seen ibini come on last night after 75mins.

My point was that apart from 1 player the entire starting aids trained and played together last year. They are way further on in terms of combinations etc. for us none of the front four played last year, neither did the fullbacks or one of the defensive midfielders.

Arnies goes on about them only being at 30% but I’m not sure where That comes from the vast majority of the team have been together. I’d argue we have far more room to grow given the Traditional wanderers rebuild

So it was Archie Thompson I was trying to work out what caused the victory chant

It’s all bluff and bluster from Arnie. 30% lol

He’s just trying to spark them to bigger and better things. Although he talks so much **** I don’t think even he knows which parts he thinks are true and which are clearly motivational tactics. The test for Arnie is when things start going bad and his delusional bs rings hollow. Unfortunately he never had to deal with that last year and we missed a great chance last night to start it this year. This team will struggle big time through ACL. We’ll see if he can bluff his team through that period.

Yep, they disappeared in the 2nd half. Nowhere to be seen. I was actually hoping that during the 2nd half Gallop would start pegging half full water bottles at us for all the **** he copped in the first half.

    5 year ban.

Andy Harper used to run Sydney FC. He's even more biased.

I don't believe so. Harper is a professional and way smarter than that dumb prick Slater.

I agree with WB here..... I've heard him in raptures over WSW over the years.

As Btron pointed out a few days ago,  Harper will often focus on the positives of any team (which annoys some here, but I actually find that annoyance hard to fathom). Just because he says something positive about SFC doesn't have to indicate bias, surely?

I'm always surprised when people here perceive biases. I don't hear it.

Maybe I'm not listening for it....but I really don't hear it.

PS Andy Harper's allegiance to SFC is different to the allegiances of Popa, Santa, Bridgey, Janjentovic, NTS and so many other of our players who played there....how?

They are professional, and they all  managed to find ways to bond with another team (and will continue to do so as they move around).

Surely just because he was once an employee of the club, doesn't have to mean he will be unable to be professional and impartial in his commentary....does it?

    :)  :)

    Lol.

And now, what was I saying about being a dumb prick?

Harper would never say such a thing.  He's too smart and professional to lower himself to trolls on social media. Slater, not so.

Now Fox Sports, get your act together and allocate the best commentators to the biggest matches.

Doesng even have to be the best commentators just not those that can't put aside their bias

You can only play as well as your opponents allow you to play.

Since when is a 2-0 scoreline a guarantee of winning any game?

It was a great game....with certain frustrations, but not as many as at other times. :pardon:

Yes but the elation at being 2-0 up feels like a long time ago. We have smashed those guys since the game were Mooy nearly cut ADP in half

Yep....Undefeated after 3 rounds, undefeated in FFA Cup, not a bad start to the season. Smurfs have ACL to come. They won't win the comp. We will.

I know.....but there was still a lot to be excited about for the rest to the season in that game.

I guess I don't buy into the whole enmity thing that so many here do....so I don't feel the pain of disappointment with the same intensity as others here do.

I don't mean to dismiss that intense disappointment though...so sorry if it comes across that way.
