  • Wanderers Lose Grand Final 2-1 In Extra Time

    mack

Western Sydney have let a one goal lead slip deep into normal time and couldn't hold on for a shootout in Brisbane tonight.

The Wanderers opened the scoring in the 58th minute, as Matthew Spiranovic attacked a corner at the near post, making sweet contact with the ball and getting it over the head of the Roar defender on the near post.

The 66th minute saw the Wanderers championship hopes take a diabolical turn. The almost ever-present Nikolai Topor-Stanley cut a disconsolate figure as he succumbed to an injury sustained while attempting a tackle. It forced a reshuffle as Iacopo La Rocca moved to take up Topor's position, with Aaron Mooy coming on to fill the gap in midfield. While La Rocca continued to excel at the back, the Wanderers were pegged back into their own half.

The Red & Black held out until the 86th minute. Thomas Broich delivered a free kick into the Wanderers penalty box, Ante Covic was caught in no-man's land as he came out then stopped in his tracks. Besart Berisha, in his last game for the Roar before his move to Melbourne Victory, took full advantage to equalise to the delight of the majority of the 51,000 strong crowd.

The killer blow came courtesy of substitute Henrique in the 18th minute of extra time. James Donachie was able to reach the ball near the byline, and he smashed a cross into the centre along the ground that the diminutive Brazilian couldn't and didn't miss.

Iacopo La Rocca was named joint winner alongside Broich for the Joe Marston medal for player of the match.

Brisbane are now the most successful club in terms of A-League Championships, with three. Hopefully this means the FFA will give them the 'toilet seat' to keep and go out and buy a proper trophy. The Wanderers will be flying out to Japan to play the first leg of their ACL knock-out stage tie against Sanfrecce.

The Wanderers next match is against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday the 7th of May.

    Shattered..........just shattered

    - I feel we shut up shop a bit too early..........we just gave them too much time.

    - The referees - yep, Green did gave the FFA what they wanted - a Brisbane win

    - RBB was enormous: well done to everyone at the game, you made plenty of noise

    - Mooy was rubbish when he came on

    - Spirra is just immense

    - Shattered for Ono and Hersi

I honestly don't know how we will pick ourselves up for another chance - we were 5 minutes from winning it.

although the best team on the day lost, it has to be said that the best team of the season won

and by the way, i thought green was outstanding today

Guys , 2seasons old , I think we've done pretty damn good in such a short time. It sucks to lose once let alone twice, but there has to be a winner. Still think Green f**ked up with the handball , but too late now. ACL is next , let's kick some arse!!!! Plenty of titles to win , plenty to lose also. Our support was f**king fantastic! Drowned out the piss poor effort of the home crowd, well done guys , you did the team proud! :) Remember , win or lose...... COYW!!!!!!!!!

We lost Topor we lost the structure we lost the match. End of.

Ps - Berisha having to gee up his own fans is the ultimate insult to them.

Its saying they arent creating enough of an atmosphere to lift the team.

Fans should lift the players, players shouldnt lift the fans

Shite happens, both teams had chances to put it away,

Overall I will give peter green a pass mark, he did manage to keep all 22 players on the pitch.

The great thing about football is that while the losses hurt, the wins are even a greater feeling,

100% respect to the people that found the money to travel to brisbane on a weeks notice,

This is Western Sydney, we will get knocked down and down but always come up, like a Phoenix rising from the ashes.

We still have 2 games to play this season, may the football Gods allow us to give Sanfeece Hiroshima everything we've got.

An away goal and a draw on Wednesday night and we are in the box seat for the champions league quarter finals.

Heads up people, Sydney will always be red and black

Agree with woc..............losing Topor was crucial.

At least Berisha will go to a team where supporters actually make some noise. It is embarrassing watching the replay to see so many just sitting there (plus lots of empty seats on the side you can see on the TV. Who cares how successful they are as a club, they have about 10,000 actual fans and another 40,000 who become fans when they win.

Can't wait for next season when he's scoring against them! Let's see the love then!!!

La Rocca was awesome until they had to change, he owned that midfield. Oh well....... someone make me feel better!!!! :(

Massively proud of the team and the traveling support. Dominated on the park for large periods and off the park from start to finish.

Also if I ever see Peter Green walking down the street I'll headbutt the bastard. We made 28 tackles to their 28 but conceded 32 fouls to 13 and 6 yellow cards to 0.

I seriously don't know how those that play against Berisha don't smack that wanker in the face. When the sniper hit him, that was the biggest act of simulation I've seen since his 8 roll sniper hit in Perth! La Rocca should've given him some old Tasotti work , then he would've had something to roll around for, f**king wanker.

Yes La Rocca amd Shinji out of mids destroyed us.

I have a confession to make.

**** en idiot me wore my jersey today.

Some believe in superstitions others dont.

But every time I have worn my jersey we have lost.

Shattered but the broish / berisha combo got us..... La rocca going to defense changed the game completely ... He was having his best ever match there and to lose that gave the roar the advantage

Football can give you the highest of highs, but crush you just as quick

Need to shake this grand final tag quick

Getting bottles thrown on us from top tier was fun.

    Stay classy Brisbane.

Just stay cool ,remember , you're coming back to civilisation n 2014!

Oh we were all cool. Home coming now... proud of the lads. Gutted.

A bit hard to take. Absolutely gutted. The whole game changed once NTS got injured and we shifted LaRocca from the midfield into the backline. It was moving LaRocca out that hurt us the most, he was absolutely killing them in midfield. Winning everything, cleaning up lose balls, tackles won. Once Mooy replaced him in the midfield I knew we would suffer for it. Even when we were 1-0 up I didn't feel safe. Its a shitty way to lose, but that's football. Well done to Brisbane, they have had a great season and weren't at their best tonight, but still played a great game. Oh well back to the drawing board

    What a game.

You should've won 2 penalties.. Roar definately got several key decisions in their favour.

Congratulations on what has to be the biggest away contingent seen in the A-League so far, bettering only yourselves when travelling to Gosford.

Losing a grand final must suck but when you finally win one it will be that much sweeter.

I don't often admit this but WSW is the best thing to happen to the A-League the last 2 years, even better than us signing Del Piero.

    Chin up lads, well done.
