  • Wanderers Lose Grand Final 2-1 In Extra Time

    mack

Western Sydney have let a one goal lead slip deep into normal time and couldn't hold on for a shootout in Brisbane tonight.

The Wanderers opened the scoring in the 58th minute, as Matthew Spiranovic attacked a corner at the near post, making sweet contact with the ball and getting it over the head of the Roar defender on the near post.

The 66th minute saw the Wanderers championship hopes take a diabolical turn. The almost ever-present Nikolai Topor-Stanley cut a disconsolate figure as he succumbed to an injury sustained while attempting a tackle. It forced a reshuffle as Iacopo La Rocca moved to take up Topor's position, with Aaron Mooy coming on to fill the gap in midfield. While La Rocca continued to excel at the back, the Wanderers were pegged back into their own half.

The Red & Black held out until the 86th minute. Thomas Broich delivered a free kick into the Wanderers penalty box, Ante Covic was caught in no-man's land as he came out then stopped in his tracks. Besart Berisha, in his last game for the Roar before his move to Melbourne Victory, took full advantage to equalise to the delight of the majority of the 51,000 strong crowd.

The killer blow came courtesy of substitute Henrique in the 18th minute of extra time. James Donachie was able to reach the ball near the byline, and he smashed a cross into the centre along the ground that the diminutive Brazilian couldn't and didn't miss.

Iacopo La Rocca was named joint winner alongside Broich for the Joe Marston medal for player of the match.

Brisbane are now the most successful club in terms of A-League Championships, with three. Hopefully this means the FFA will give them the 'toilet seat' to keep and go out and buy a proper trophy. The Wanderers will be flying out to Japan to play the first leg of their ACL knock-out stage tie against Sanfrecce.

The Wanderers next match is against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday the 7th of May.

We lost Topor we lost the structure we lost the match. End of.

Ps - Berisha having to gee up his own fans is the ultimate insult to them.

Its saying they arent creating enough of an atmosphere to lift the team.

Fans should lift the players, players shouldnt lift the fans

Can't wait for next season when he's scoring against them! Let's see the love then!!!

La Rocca was awesome until they had to change, he owned that midfield. Oh well....... someone make me feel better!!!! :(

Yes La Rocca amd Shinji out of mids destroyed us.

I have a confession to make.

**** en idiot me wore my jersey today.

Some believe in superstitions others dont.

But every time I have worn my jersey we have lost.

Pssst, WoC ...it wasn't your fault!!  Honest!!   :)

I just can't admire the Roar - Berisha is a cheat and gets away with too much

Their "supporters"......30000 bandwagoners who only turn up when they win. The remaining 10,000 are just embarassing. The fact the players had to asked to be cheered on is Embarassing.

At least we didn't cheat our way to a title - the refs still don't like us, maybe the FFA play their part since they are not fans of us as a club. This hurts big time because we were 5 mins from the win.

    What a game.

You should've won 2 penalties.. Roar definately got several key decisions in their favour.

Congratulations on what has to be the biggest away contingent seen in the A-League so far, bettering only yourselves when travelling to Gosford.

Losing a grand final must suck but when you finally win one it will be that much sweeter.

I don't often admit this but WSW is the best thing to happen to the A-League the last 2 years, even better than us signing Del Piero.

    Chin up lads, well done.

Somehting tells me that Parra has had a few too many glasses of O'Farrell's '59 Grange tonight

Absolutely gutted like everyone else. magnificent supporters we have, out performed roar fans so much I thought all their supporters had laryngitis and were on valium not a peep from them till they scored their second goal.

I had to be revived twice in the last 20 minutes and I said to my family when I heard the final score "why did you bring me back"

I might now if I may be a wee bit critical....I believe poor discipline was an important factor in the loss, yes I know we can whinge about the ref, however, we need in future to be smarter in the discipline dept...we just don't need to give away so many free kicks.

Anyway, so proud of the team, win or lose.

As soon as Topor went off I had a horrible sinking feeling. To lose the way we did is just th ar arghhhhhh the ******* worst. I'm choking on my own rage here.

The booing of our players when they were getting thief medals - typical and yet pathetic at the same time.

At least half of their fans left before the presentation - yeah, they are real supporters

Unlucky. Good season from the players and coaching staff. I thought when Brisbane scored that first goal it was always going to be tough. Well done to all our supporters and let's hope we can pull of a surprise in the ACL games coming up. The future looks good.

What do you expect from Queenslanders? League mentality right there. Let's see in 7 more seasons how we're travelling compared to them.

They booed a few players but no one was really bothered by it. Berisha was the one who should have been booed by the whole stadium. Carries on like a pork chop.

I've got *Roar* friends who were so outraged by the ref's poor calls against us that they're *still* spitting chips over it.

Seriously - and, yes, Topor's injury was a *big* hit - that game was won and lost by the whistle.

I might be out of line here and perhaps I'm dipping into the feeling like crap right now, but I think it has to be said that JP didn't have his best game tonight...seemed a little out of it when it came to hitting his mark when going forward. Maybe he was simply shagged out from having to monster Big Nose Broich. Conversely, a man who we often have a few issues with, i.e. d'Apuzzo, was more than decent.

Methinks it must be said that Popa had the right tactical plan and structure for everything except for that one bloody injury...losing NTS undoubtedly rooted us. Question is, if he had someone like Hefferenan, Cole or Meggsy in the subs would he have gone with any one of them.

Actually, I thought JP was brilliant. Shutting down Broich is a big ask, and he did it well.

It shows you how important structure is.

As soon as Topor went off it was like we were playing with 10 men.

It was a double whammy. We lost our key defender and at the same time lost our in form midfielder.

It seemed that we had a bit of creativity left through Shinji andthen guess what!

It couldnt have gone worse for us.

I thought Meggsy would have been useful, but I don't think La Rocca had a bad game at centre back. I think the whole team played well in general. Things like that happen in a game where Brisbane scored in the last 10 mins out of nowhere. We almost made it 2-0 just before that. It's those little things that turn games and you only begin to see that with hindsight.

We did enough to win, but they got the breaks at the end with a bit of help from the home town referee. It was always going to be tough if they equalised and it ended up hurting us in the end.

In our first two seasons we've won the premiership and been in two grand finals, with very little money to splash out on top quality players I feel the club and it's supporters should be very proud !!

tonight the roar took their chances and scored if Haliti went either side of Theo and it may have been two nil, two errors in marking and it's game over we live and learn and move on to the ACL.

the travelling supporters were magnificent today, well done to everyone who was at Suncorp your support drowned out 40,000 home supporters.

Proud to be a westie !!

My only solace is the Mariners also lost 2 grand finals - before they won it.

3... FFS, I think I need to make sure I'm signed up to all the organ donor programs, I've seen 5 GF losses in 9 years.

Cole was on the bench, though, so he opted to bring on Mooy instead. Absolutely agree with your sentiments.

We could have won it... But then they are deserving champions for the season.

We were better tonight and I hope NTS is okay. His injury changed it all up for us as our defence as makeshift. Now on to the ACL!!

Also agree about the Brisbane band wagoners...

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
