  • Wanderers Out Of FFA Cup In Shootout

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been knocked out of the FFA Cup in a penalty shootout with Perth Glory when their quarter final tie ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Despite the Wanderers looking the better of the two sides and having taken the lead through Dimas Delgado, Perth stayed in the match throughout the contest, equalised in controversial fashion through Marinkovic before the Wanderers penalty problems reared their ugly heads as Scott Jamieson & Federico Piovaccari both failed to hit the target with Perth not missing one.

The match took a quarter hour for the first real strike in anger, as Mitch Nichols hit a sidefooted volley that just missed the goal of ex-Wanderers Ante Covic. Marinkovic fired the first shot for Perth not long after, and the game ebbed and flowed from then on. The Wanderers arguably having the best of the contest, but with little result on the pitch. 5 minutes before the break Marinkovic tried an audacious over the shoulder volley but his shot was neither powerful or directed well enough.

Right before the break the Wanderers finally took advantage of their dominance, with attacking weapon Mitch Nichols creating merry hell down the right flank and byline before cutting across to the run of Dimas Delgado. The deep lying midfielder had made a superb late run from deep and he turned in the ball from point blank range to open the scoring.

With the hosts going behind, Perth came out with more verve as they looked to find an equaliser. Ebb and flow resulted, with neither team being able to hold possession for long periods of time, Dino Djulbic going into the book for a scything challenge on Scott Jamieson as he was running through on goal.

10 minutes into the second half Nichols weaved his magic again on the right flank, surging into the box before sliding a ball across the face of goal, with Federico Piovaccari just inches away from a tap-in. Ante Covic showed his class despite his 40 years of age with an outstanding double save not long after.

Perth had the equaliser through Marinkovic, with a little help from the referee, who over-ruled a flag for offside after several minutes of consultation with the assistant. With the match closing in on fulltime, a hectic pace developed with both sides launching repeated quick attacks and counter-attacks, but with no further goals the game headed to extra-time.

The first half of extra time saw the game keep it's shape, as both sides probed and prodded, the Wanderers looking more dangerous with a composed build up, against Perth who preferred to quickly counter at pace, Piovaccari having the best chance late in the half from a Neville cross but the striker couldn't direct his effort on goal. The half ended with a set-to between the sides after Sotirio was hammered by an aerial challenge.

Dario Vidosic made his debut for the Wanderers at the resumption of extra-time, a surprise inclusion as a result of Brendon Santalab being hurt during the warm-up. Mitch Nichols had a shot on the turn at the corner of the 18 yard box but his attempt sailed into the construction site behind the goals. 115 minutes in Antony Golec nearly sent Perth to the semi-final, a corner whipped in to the back post, the first header skied into the air, Golec acrobatically making contact with a volley but the ball flew over the bar.

With neither side able to break the deadlock the quarter final headed to the dreaded penalty shootout. First up was Dario Vidosic who scored despite Ante Covic getting hands to it. Marinkovic blasted past Redmayne to even the scores. Piovaccari stuttered his run-up and tried a sidefooted penalty that had no chance of being on target. Golec beat Redmayne with his left peg to put Glory 2-1 up. Substitute Andreu looked to even the score, and made no mistake shooting down the middle. Sidnei took a long run up for the 3rd penalty and sent Redmayne the wrong way to make it 3-2 after 3 each.

Former Perth Glory player Scott Jamieson stepped up with the pressure rapidly increasing and blazed it over the bar. It gave Richard Garcia the chance to send Perth through to the semi-final and he sent Redmayne the wrong way to end the match and knock the Wanderers out of the FFA Cup.

Did anyone expect Piovaccari to play all 120 minutes, because I didnt.

Sotirio was the weak link down the edge, it is a shame he couldn't have done more on with the second shot against Covic before the Perth goal. I am also reminded of an attack in the first half, where he got the ball unmarked at the back post, managed to take three touches and not get a shot away. I guess that is just inexperience because there is a quality player under there.

Piovaccari shouldn't be taking penalties. Against the Pheonix it was like he didn't care. Here, he was tired so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Andreu should be our new penalty taker. Took a breath, walked back and slotted it.

Penalties is never an easy way to lose, and I can only look back and ponder at our chance to make it 2-0 just before the Glory scored.

Relying on the likes of Sotirio, Pepper and McDonald won't get us far this coming season.

The depth of our squad is very poor.

    The Italian is no Stallion..

Im yet to see anything that sets him apart from the pack. DV looked good in the short time he had. We seem to push passes when shoot ***** is required. meanwhile Mooy is carving it up..

Fed from the limited games we have seen him in has not excelled. It way too early to make a call on him yet and hopefully now the season proper starts he will come out all guns blazing.

Jamieson is such a quality acquisition for us really makes the left sooo much stronger! Nichols work rate impressed me. Still not a Fan of sorioto - I don't think the good outweighs the not so good you get from him each game

I thought overall we did okay, The foreigners got the experience of a long road trip for the season

Ffa will be drooling over a Melb derby final now

Disagree about Pepper, he's good quality. The other two though... Our attacking youth players just don't seem to be of the calibre that our youth defenders are. What they lack in size they just don't seem to make up for in skill. It seems to be a common trait that they can all run up the line really quickly and that's about it, all like Kubi 2.0's...

mitch is mr perpetual. He never stopped working between the lines. He will link up great with andreu and dario.

Lots of positive signs. It was an away game and overall I thought we shaded the game. Wish we could do more with corners.

    upwards and onwards

In the games that I have seen so far, the most worrying thing is that fed doesn't really seem to give much of a ****. Mitch and Jamo on the other hand, quality additions.

The guys been at a tonne of clubs over the past 6-7 years , maybe just trying to find an easy dollar with whoever will take him. Hopefully I'm wrong but I want to see that hunger and passion like Bulut possessed last season.

3rd penalty shootout in the club's history and third penalty shootout loss :(

I think Dario took an excellent shot near the end of the game which covic saved well but the commentators thought he shot well wide.

This. It's one thing for him to be not excelling straight away (it takes time to get used to a formation, a league etc.) but the penalty attempts in particular have smacked of arrogance and a 'it doesn't really matter' attitude. Hoping to be proven wrong as soon as next Thursday.

Agree r.e. Jamieson. He is working hard out here, but I wouldn't allow him back near the spot any time soon. Nicholls ... eh, remains to be seen.

If you asked me who is our international marquee between Dimas, Alberto, Andreu & Pio.

I would say they all look just like your typical a-league foreigners and that neither of them were.

Andreu would probably the best of this lot.

Side note, one thing i did notice, is even with our spanish players we still had a tendency to hit those long balls to a rather stocky Pio who was getting smashed by the tall defenders of glory, i just didnt get that tactic.

As much as I would've liked us to win the FFA Cup, I'm not getting all depressed over our performance last night. Should've made it 2-0 , we didn't, so then 1-1. Fred ran more than I expected him to, good sign, although his attacking prowess is yet to be realised.

Lurch last year took a while to get going , Berisha as well , give him some time. Sotirio isn't up to standard I'm afraid , squaddy for me,

the other attacking youngins too. Our youth defenders though are good. Very happy with our Spanish guys, Romeo = legend , Vidosic has shoot faarken ability! & was classy from the moment he got on the pitch.

Nicholls is moving along nicely , Redmayne , great save , solid , get off his case now he's one of ours!!!!!!

Got plenty of attacking guys to slot back into the team , 27 games is a long way to go n I expect us to be top 3 this year!!!!

    COYW!!!!!! :woah:

To be honest they were simply knackered. Players cramping up all over the place and the last 40 mins or so of the game that seemed to be the tactic. Hope a tired defender makes an error. I don't think it will be the tactic of choice.

We are either all out defense or all out attack, and that can change a few times per minute for no reason (10 pointless passes with the back 4, only to the hoof the long ball to no one). We need to find the middle ground of an effective possesion game.

Squad depth is measured by quantity and quality - don't think we meet both criteria.

In a salary capped league you cant have both!

Our fringe players are still quality

has anyone seen any of the replays of the offside call or the penalty appeal. Plus would love to see replay of Dario's shot near the end. Think Covic may have got a glove onto it.

Left side of field looked abit overcrowded. Sofrito needs to maybe cut in when Jameison makes his runs down the wing to confuse the opposition.

The euro boys getting a full match work out in the warm Perth weather is a great fitness test of whats to come for the summer season we play out here in aus.

Well that's a bit stupid considering that they're the only competition we face this year. We don't need a premier league team's depth to compete in the a-league.

Dario Vidosic looked class, Nichols was good, and castelen was class in patches. Overall very good signs

As of last night, we now officially have no cup or champions league football to need depth for either, unlike the past two seasons. 27 games (plus hopefully finals), that's it. You don't need a huge squad. Yeah there is always the chance of injuries but that could happen to any side.

What a lazy penalty from the marquee. it was like "whatever"

Was it our third penna that a rugby side would have been proud of? I swear he was trying to convert a penalty or try, would have been a fantastic kick between the uprights. Not so often you see a penna go that far over the bar and not often you see one shanked off the side of the boot also in that fashion, really poor.
