  • Wanderers Outgunned By Arsenal

    mack

The Wanderers first major pre-season circus event ended with a dominant Arsenal scoring 3 goals against an spirited but outclassed Wanderers team at Homebush tonight.

Western Sydney managed to get through half an hour without punishment. On 15th minutes Steven Lustica had a chance to play through Jumpei on goal but his killer ball was blocked by an Arsenal defender. Jacob Melling was involved in set to with Xhaka & Olivier Giroud's fancy haircut, but despite the Wanderers winning a foul it seemed to fire up the Arsenal team and they took revenge shortly. After half an hour Arsenal opened the scoring, with Monreal breaking down the left wing, playing a one-two with new Arsenal signing Lacazette, who cut back the ball to Giroud to finish with a neat pass from close range.

The Wanderers defence was caught square just 5 minutes later, as the Arsenal defence smashed a long ball over the top of Brendan Hamill, he was left in the dust by Aaron Ramsey, and his chip left Vedran Janjetovic with no hope at all of making a save.

Right before half-time it was 3-0 with Mohamed Elneny striking from long distance and being helped by a deflection off Hamill.

The Wanderers came out with renewed spirit in the second half, and took the game to Arsenal. They were rewarded in the 56th minute.  Following some intense presure in the box, Jack Clisby fired in one of his trademark "shoot at hit the crossbar" strikes from outside the area, Arsenal failed to clear the ball, and were pinged for an intentional backpass to the goalkeeper. With the Arsenal team camped on the goal line, Lustica fired, hit the wall, then pounced on the rebound to shoot the ball into the roof of the net for a 3-1 scoreline.

Arsenal looked nearly certain to score a fourth, but they were held at bay with the help of the woodwork and scrambling defence from the Wanderers.

The 3-1 scoreline reflected the ebb & flow of the game well enough. Roly Bonevacia did well, particularly in the second half, and new marquee striker Oriol Riera did well enough with his limited game time. Unfortunately, neither Brendan Hamill or Jumpei Kusukami made any positive impact for the Wanderers, Hamill being part of all three Arsenal goals, and Jumpei rotating between invisibility, and being monstered off the ball by his midfield markers.

At the end of the day these matches are less about winning & losing than they are about helping to gain match fitness and regularity with the tactics involved, and on the whole it appears for the Wanderers they achieved what would have been expected of them. The pre-season will continue as we all head towards the FFA Cup and the opening rounds of the A-League.

Roly WSW man of the match for mine.

    Hamill and Jumpie usual shyte.

    Useful workout.

I truly don't understand what Popa sees in Hamill. It baffles me. Especially considering Popa's experience as a defender.  I breathed a sigh of relief when Thwaite came on. Hopefully Thwaite, Cornflakes and Aspro is all that is required in central defence for the whole season.

Other than thought I thought it would turn nasty at 3-0, but the team showed some character. Good to hear Bridge signing also.

Pros - Roly, Oreo and some of our other new signings were really impressive, the RBB's performance after that email and the hot chips I had at half time.

Cons - Those ******* **** **** paper planes, that ******* Mexican wave, plastic euroknobs everywhere, Jumpei and Hamill and the sausage roll I had at half time.

I left after the Mexican wave started. Never going to another game like this ever again. I'm lucky I only paid half price for my tickets. If I had paid $150, I would have been mighty pissed. They are just a huge wankfest and after what I witnessed tonight, I'm happy to skip any others.

On the plus side though, that's the quickest and easiest exit I've ever had from SOP. Was home by 10:30.

Good to see the boys on the pitch after 3 months. As I said in the previous thread eurosnobs are an embarrassment. I had Australian people talking in faux English accents and doing the "what do you think of Tottenham?" chant in the same shitty accent.

The four biggest cheers of the night were for:

    1. Ozil

    2. A paper airplane

    3. Arsenal goal

    4. Mexican wave

I can understand why people refused to go to this **** show. Don't think I'll attend another

I thought the game for a pre-season was ok.

    Pros:
    - Cornthwaite, Melling giving not **** to Granit, Clisby, Roly, Risdon, Vedran.
    - Majok looked alright when he got into space, just needs better control of the ball
    - Riera has some good tekkers on him, knows how to place a shot, shame that he didn't do better when he had the chance but he's looking promising.
    - Vedran GKing was pretty good. Did well to command the box.
    - I thought we played well in patches. we got the ball moving forward a lot more quicker than last season
    - RBB in fine voice tonight!

    Cons:
    - Hamil
    - ANZ Stadium
    - Sydney Olympic Park
    - Eurosnobs
    - Paper planes
    - the **** mexican wave!!!
    - Where was Aspro?

There was some pros, Roly looked good. Oriol Riera looks to have a good touch. Snake kept well.

I agree with the Mexican wave sentiments above. However my 7 year old quite liked it so meh.

It is what it is..a friendly the type of which i have been to on trip with Boro a good few times.

The only time a friendly is ever good is when it is a road trip to somewhere unusual and dont often go to. Been to some epic friendly games following the Boro to Scotland, the dash to Raith Rovers when we got lost, the awesome pies at Kilmarnock the hard bastards at Motherwell and the bother, the drink and craic...that is how pre season friendly games work at their best.

Tonight was everything i thought it would be with a game of this kind at home.

A decent away FFA Cup game againt a NSW side will be a million times better than tonight.

After tonight I have a new found hatred towards eurosnobs. I'm an Arsenal fan but I'd choose to support my local team if they were to ever play against each other every day of the week.

Dickheads on my train gloating about Arsenals 3-1 win, like they somehow have some sort of affiliation with a club in another continent. **** off.

I love Arsenal and WSW, but supporters who **** on their own countries league are a joke.

I gave it back to a few Arsenal fans they didn't like it but I'm almost 7ft tall so I didn't hear much response so all good 😊

At least by following a different club in a different country they know they won't get absolutely shat on by the FFA and their stooges! Though I'm sure they'd find a way.

How was the RBB bay? Was it filled with arsenal supporters? How was the voice?
