  • Wanderers Robbed By Inept Referee

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been robbed by Chris Beath and the worst use of the VAR since it's introduction to the A-League as it made multiple errors that cost the Wanderers dearly.

Despite coming into the game unbeaten the visiting Wanderers started just one league position above Adelaide United by virtue of their goal difference. Josep Gombau elected to leave Kearyn Baccus on the bench, choosing a midfield trio of Jacob Melling, Roly Bonevacia & Alvaro Cejudo, backed by the usual back defensive block of Janjetovic, Risdon, Cornthwaite, Thwaite & Raul Llorente and an attacking trio of Riera, Sotiro & Jumpei.

The game was 15 minutes old when the VAR's first mistake was made. The Wanderers took an attacking corner, where Oriol Riera was rugby tackled to the ground. In any league in the world with competent officials Riera would have been heading to the spot to take a penalty. Instead not only did Chris Beath, a referee who has it out for the Wanderers, miss the foul, the VAR which is meant to correct errors, declined to make the right call. Captain Robbie Cornthwaite was yellow carded as Adelaide broke up the field on the counter.

VAR was again called into action in the 20th minute and once again made a dreadfully incorrect decision. With an Adelaide cross finding their striker on the edge of the penalty area, his first time shot flew 2 meters into the hands of Cornthwaite. Play continued until the ball went out of play. At that point, the VAR directed Beath (who the Wanderers now only have a 25% winning record against, the 2nd worst in the league behind Newcastle) to review the footage, and he changed his mind from the live call, awarded Adelaide and sent a furious Cornthwaite off for a second bookable "offence". There was a measure of justice when Baba Diawara smashed the penalty into the post but it hardly mattered as Adelaide went into half-time 1-0 anyway through Ryan Kitto.

Yet again, the officials made the wrong call and were backed up by the VAR. Diawara managed a slight touch on a cross while in an offside position, the linesman ignored it and let the play run. The ball fell to Ryan Kitto who stabbed the ball home. Despite the replay showing Diawara clearly offside, it was not overturned and Roly Bonevacia went into the referees notebook for protesting. Adelaide pressed home their advantage in the 60th minute to make it 2-0 with Kitto picking up his brace after he passed the ball home after receiving it on a silver platter due to Janjetovic coming out and failing to meet an onrushing Nikola Mileusnic.

Chris Beath added to his error ridden evening when he failed to deliver a straight red for a blatantly obvious studs up lunge by Ben Garrucio on Roly Bonevacia. The VAR finally managed to make a correct decision as it overturned the awarded yellow card. It was too little too late for the Wanderers with only 10 minutes to go, they couldn't force a goal to make Adelaide nervous in the home stretch.

Both the VAR and Chris Beath made multiple huge errors in both judgement and application of the rules. Beath missed a rugby tackle on Riera, then missed the handball completely OR decided to change his mind and call it deliberate after the fact if he saw it live (a Morton's Fork of bad officiating), his linesman missed a clear offside for Adelaide's first goal, then both Beath and the assistant missed what was a 100% clear red card for Garrucio. The VAR backed up three of those poor decisions meaning it doesn't escape sanction either.

The level of officiating in Australia has been abysmal in the past few years. The introduction of the VAR is simply stacking on an addition level of failure. The time is long past for the FFA to spend some of their $20+ million a year salary on some professional referees from the likes of South Korea, Japan, Germany, the Nordic states or England and start getting decisions right first time around. The VAR must be removed as soon as possible. Not only does it get decisions wrong, it compounds incorrect decisions by the officials, it also strips away the joy of scoring a goal, a critical expression that differentiates football from other games that score rapidly and/or review every play with a 5 minute long video replay.

Sorry dont agree baccus has been our best player for 12 months although can appreciate gombau might have certain tactics for the game

But if you can't find a spot for baccus but can find one for sotorio and jumpei then that to me is strange

we are all missing something with Sotirio. Seems Foxe was the only guy who didn't fancy him in the starting 11. Popa loved him and so does Josep. Yes he runs, he puts in, but his quality is woeful.

Be good to get Herd back next week and absolutely we need 3 points. The performances are underwhelming so we need a bit of a feel-good factor back. SOP is killing us slowly and we have at least another season there. We need  to reclaim that positivity we had after Perth as it's a bit doom and gloom right now. Three back to back wins and you can storm up this league.

Well that was the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen. The game was over in the first half because of the 3 dumbest VAR decision I have ever seen. Our penalty shout when Reira was clearly brought down, the 2nd yellow card to Cornthwaite (which was partly his fault too because the first one was very avoidable) and the Adelaide 1st goal for the offside (he played at the ball as pointed out by Simon Hill and Harper).

When you even have Harper arguing things should of gone our way well that kind of tells you the shocker that the ref was having

The names Sotirio and Melling should never be in a starting 11.

    My summary and shameless rant/plug.

The VAR has done something to effect; shown us that our (A-League’s) referees are useless when it comes to making their own decisions

That one sentence right there is the most successful outcome of VAR right now.

Give me that ref from that night a few month ago when we won the shootout in FFA Cup in Blacktown.

    She was better than anything.

seems a common theme with football in this country at moment the best things are female! :good:

Underwhelming recruits, questionable line-up choices, a comp being ruined VAR - my enthusiasm for this team and the comp is severely being tested!

Fox Sports have an article on their website covering their discussion with referees boss Ben Wilson. Key points:

    Quote

Of the weekend controversies, Wilson revealed that the VAR could not conclusively rule Baba Diawara off-side for Adelaide’s opening goal against Western Sydney, because of camera angles and a skerrick of doubt that saw the VAR defer to giving the advantage to the attacking team.

He also clarified that Jacob Pepper did not receive a yellow card for handball in the box for Brisbane against Sydney, while Robert Cornthwaite did for Wanderers against Adelaide, because the latter’s was a “handball stopping a promising attack”. Pepper’s was merely a handball on a ball going into the penalty area.

Complete rubbish. On the Diawara call, there is a perfectly clear and in line camera angle that shows him offside. The only doubt is whether he touched it although that doesn't matter as he played at it and interfered with play. On the Cornthwaite call, how is it "stopping a promising attack" when it was a weak shot straight at the keeper that took the slightest glance off his hand? If anything the deflection could have put Vedran off. Also he used the Pepper comparison as an example rather than the much more relevant Neville vs Wellington example that Mack identified.

Ben Wilson is under pressure, he will never say the ref or VAR stuffed up.

Spot on but behind closed doors i would expect that the video analysis session with Beath and his team will be fiery.

We seem to get Beath every other weekend so its time we get somebody else other than Beath and Gillett.

Still can’t get over the game, 1 dodgy decision I can take but 3!

The worst of them was the offside call, How is it not offside? Surely that is there decision the Var is there to fix, offside player plays at ball, it’s an easy one.

The Reira non penalty was bad, he had his hands on him, it was clear since when is a defender allowed to do that?

the handball yellow card is open to interpretation (but still stupid he is trying to move his hand away)

I'm not too fussed over the penalty call. It did strike Corny's hand so fair enough. However it wasn't deliberate so he should not have been sent off. it wasn't a bookable offence. If the ball is on it's way goalwards and it hits someones hand it should be a penalty. It's not the attacking teams fault after all but it's not a punishable offence unless it's deliberate.

Ben Wilson is under instructions by the FFA to protect the refs (and VAR) and make sure the refs here are never held accountable for their mistakes.

David Gallop imposed this rule in the NRL on the ref boss and a lot of the refs bosses there have come and gone.

FFA have set the precedence for the A-League refs for them  to be allowed to get away with these mistakes they make and go on to ref the next week. They make an incorrect call of goal even though the play is offside? Don't worry, it's still a correct call.

You sometimes wonder if they know the rules of the game at all?

I agree we need better attackers but this week is not the week to complain about our team. All the rage should be directed at the morons that brought in the VAR and the other **** decisions that are ruining football.

FIFA are the ones that made FFA to introduce VAR ,and got nothing to do with anyone else. There are other countries use VAR.

I'm at a loss. Why has no one else questioned if the ball actually hit his hand or arm? None of the replays I've seen show a clear handball. I've seen nothing that shows the ball made contact, there is no deflection of the ball's trajectory.  So how was it a clear error that needed to be overturned? What have others seen to convince themselves there was hand and ball contact?

Funny you say that. I didn't think it hit his hand but I thought it must have as nobody said it didn't.

No, we volunteered. But yeah, my comment wasn’t directed at the FFA alone. Refs, FIFA, the AFC, FFA, useless commentators that are too afraid to tell it like it is because of who is paying their wages, administrators that are more interested in cash for big clubs (Europe) than a proper competition. All these ****s are to blame for ruining football.

The replays showed a similar amount of contact between the ball and Cornthwaite's hand as it did contact between the ball and Diawara's foot on the offside.

Less so. I could see no change in ball direction from Cornthwaite's hand. However, there was clearly a change in direction from the foot.

Yeah I wasn't convinced it hit his hand either.

A game like this really kills off your enthusiasm for the league. I don't mind the odd decision going against you every now & then because the ref made the wrong choice in a split second, but if even with all this technology, all the time wastes checking, they still get it so blatantly wrong, what hope is there? I mean what's the point in competing in a league where you can just have three points thrown out the window just like that? I'm not just talking about us, but this VAR has been so farcically implemented that I'm sure the league table could look completely different without it. Which would be fine if it was getting the decisions correct, but it isn't. We're basically just watching a random simulation.

I'm sure I'll enjoy our next win, but that's the thing...normally I go to a game thinking that if we play well enough to win, we'll win, or be really unlucky to not win. Now I know we can play really well and still lose through no fault of our own (not saying that happened here, we never had a chance to find out...but we were controlling the game and should have had a pen before any of the other decisions).

I'm convinced Greg O'Rourke and the rest don't actually watch any of the games, except the big derbies that they are in the corporate boxes for.

    • Without trying to be an immensly massive knob, and I say this to someone who's opinion I respect a lot on here, thats absolutely not true. Theres a large pile studies on the impact of player performance post ACL injuries. I'm happy to have discussion about it thats evidence based, though the post game may not be the best place. We are here solely to bemoan our current standings aren't we?  That all said, I dont think Tate has any real future with his current output. He's been back at it for a season and is only showing decline
    • Not sure.  Will decide at the last minute but doubtful after todays performance.
    • With all due respect, I can't remember Tate ever putting in a decent 90min.
