  • Wanderers Stay Top With Draw

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers took a point from their clash tonight against the Brisbane Roar, following a disjointed performance punctuated by multiple injuries and a last gasp miss from Alex Meier that would have won the game.

Brisbane came into the game with a nearly unchanged lineup and one solitary point, their early performance in the game belied that position on the table as they took the fight to the table topping Wanderers. The Wanderers suffered an early blow when Pirmin Schwegler was taken off after suffering what looked to be a calf injury after 15 minutes. A half an hour of figurative push & shove came to an end as Daniel Georgevski's athletic effort from a Max Crocombe spillage was tipped over the bar by the Roar shot stopper, and at the other end Jay O'Shea blasted from a wide angle forcing Lopar into a double handed save that spilled back into the path of Roy O'Donovan, rebounded off the striker before being cleared away from a strike by Brad Inman.

Daniel Lopar earned his man of the match effort in no small part with a quick reaction save on his line early in the 2nd half. A 49th minute corner was whipped in to the 6 yard box, Macaulay Gillesphey nodded it toward goal, Meier was Alex on the spot to clear. Only as far as Daniel Bowles, and his point blank volley brought the best out of Lopar and the Roar couldn't believe they hadn't hit the back of the net.

Western Sydney's new attacking midfielder Nicolai Muller saw his first action in Australia, although his contribution was quite limited in effectiveness. Patrick Ziegler returned from his long injury break, as the Wanderers injury ward grew with the addition of Matthew Jurman as he came off after an injury, in the 80th minute. The Roar continued their graft, Stefan Mauk trying two long range efforts as full time loomed.

In the dying minutes it was the Wanderers marquee man Alexander Meier who should have broken the deadlock. Two minutes into stoppage time, Baccus managed to work the ball out to Georgevski, he found new man Muller, his cut back was perfectly placed for Meier, but with the crowd rising in expectation, Meier badly misjudged the flight of the ball, a tame effort that he couldn't even aim to either side of Crocombe, and with that the Wanderers sent the home crowd home disappointed with the first draw at the Western Sydney Stadium. Despite the draw the Wanderers remain top of the table & yet to taste defeat, 1 point ahead of local rivals Sydney FC although Melbourne City could draw level on Sunday.

The Wanderers face expansion side Western United next Saturday the 9th of November at 7:30PM, at the Geelong AFL stadium.

If anyone doubts what Meier brings to the team then I suggest you have a look at the video of Lopar's save of the round against the Roar. The ball is headed off the line first by none other than AM...then Lopar stops the second one.

Riera was great at defensive headers too...

One goal so far this season, and it came off the back of a failed defensive clean up from the opposition keeper.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Meier and what he brings to the team; but he needs to start scoring goals soon.

Yeah I'd want a striker to do more than clear a ball of the line once.

Let's hope he picks up soon.

...and like Riera he has to be given service so he has a chance to score.  While we are top of the table at present we have yet to have any fluidity to our attack and  chances are few and far between. Give it time. Muller will make a difference in that respect I think.

I'd be happy with him offering himself as an option occasionally or breaking into a run.

I was over in Cairns on holidays and I completely missed the first half as I totally forgot that bloody QLD are 1hr behind Sydney in the summer time.

But watching the 2nd half, I have no idea what was going on, I was wondering, where is Pirmin? Why are Hollandia FC dominating us in the midfield? Why are we barely attacking their goal? Why is Yeboah being an absolute dogshit with the ball?

Then I realised Pirmin got injured in the first half, we pretty much lost creativity and control in the midfield. Grozos was somewhat ok but him, Baccus and Yeboah both failed to step up and were getting bossed way too easily in the midfield.

Duke, as soon as he has the ball, the Roar players are onto him straight away and Duke loses possession as he has little to no support. When we are attacking their goal, Roar players defend very deep and they have like 7 or 8 players behind the ball compared to the 3 or 4 we have attacking them. The Roar were looking to get us on the counter, our defence did well to hold them up, Jurman was immense until he got injured and Lopar made some very incredible saves to keep the roar scoreless.

Muller despite looking unfit was looking quite promising, made some good runs into the pockets of the roar's defence and his corner easily finding Meier was class, hoping to see more of this.

The injuries we have so far is concerning, and as much as I am against it, I think a bye coming up next week could have come at a much better time for our players to recover.

some people just need a safe space where they can pretend everything is perfect but get all bitter and pathetic when people disagree, and those people sadly used to be good people but some people just grow bitter and end up being unable to communicate with anyone without hurling insults for no reason

Finally summoned up the strength to come back on the forum after one week of moping.  The morning after the game I woke up and couldn't remember who played for us.  All I had was the pain in the chest that comes from betting responsibly on a certainty only to lose. Dammit AMFG that goal was all I needed!!!

    Lol...

But I honestly don't see the need for people to repress expression of what they think/feel about where we're at.

If people can't say what they think/feel here...well, where can they?

Does that make time the truest wanderer for almost nailing that attendance figure 😂

With all those posts since end of game I think the early summer heat is getting to people 🤔

isn’t the point of a Internet forum to let the the keyboard warriors out with their opinions!
hell if people like slater and Archie get to verbally dribble on live TV anyone can sure as hell come here have their say...

I haven’t really observed anything inaccurate here today...

    - we aren’t playing that well

    - some players could be doing better

    - it’s still early no reason to panic we are top of the league

    - injuries are popping up again and it’s concern

    - we want to see better that what we currently are on the pitch

I value reading what everyone has to say 👍

there is no right or wrong - as babbel said in his presser when asked the media said Fowler didn’t agree with babbel assessment of the game - babbel replies everyone looks through their own glasses 🤓

Looking forward to WU game another tough battle. dalmanti looks a handful

that strike was top class 👌

    Blessed are the peacemakers :)

Watching the Bayern match earlier today and Babel, Müller and the Wanderers all rated a mention in the first half. I hope they weren't watching the match.

    Wow, amazing.  In what context?

I assume in the match vs eintracht Frankfurt in BL1 last weekend, helps when the co-com was Mark Schwarzer
