  • Wanderers Stay Top With Draw

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers took a point from their clash tonight against the Brisbane Roar, following a disjointed performance punctuated by multiple injuries and a last gasp miss from Alex Meier that would have won the game.

Brisbane came into the game with a nearly unchanged lineup and one solitary point, their early performance in the game belied that position on the table as they took the fight to the table topping Wanderers. The Wanderers suffered an early blow when Pirmin Schwegler was taken off after suffering what looked to be a calf injury after 15 minutes. A half an hour of figurative push & shove came to an end as Daniel Georgevski's athletic effort from a Max Crocombe spillage was tipped over the bar by the Roar shot stopper, and at the other end Jay O'Shea blasted from a wide angle forcing Lopar into a double handed save that spilled back into the path of Roy O'Donovan, rebounded off the striker before being cleared away from a strike by Brad Inman.

Daniel Lopar earned his man of the match effort in no small part with a quick reaction save on his line early in the 2nd half. A 49th minute corner was whipped in to the 6 yard box, Macaulay Gillesphey nodded it toward goal, Meier was Alex on the spot to clear. Only as far as Daniel Bowles, and his point blank volley brought the best out of Lopar and the Roar couldn't believe they hadn't hit the back of the net.

Western Sydney's new attacking midfielder Nicolai Muller saw his first action in Australia, although his contribution was quite limited in effectiveness. Patrick Ziegler returned from his long injury break, as the Wanderers injury ward grew with the addition of Matthew Jurman as he came off after an injury, in the 80th minute. The Roar continued their graft, Stefan Mauk trying two long range efforts as full time loomed.

In the dying minutes it was the Wanderers marquee man Alexander Meier who should have broken the deadlock. Two minutes into stoppage time, Baccus managed to work the ball out to Georgevski, he found new man Muller, his cut back was perfectly placed for Meier, but with the crowd rising in expectation, Meier badly misjudged the flight of the ball, a tame effort that he couldn't even aim to either side of Crocombe, and with that the Wanderers sent the home crowd home disappointed with the first draw at the Western Sydney Stadium. Despite the draw the Wanderers remain top of the table & yet to taste defeat, 1 point ahead of local rivals Sydney FC although Melbourne City could draw level on Sunday.

The Wanderers face expansion side Western United next Saturday the 9th of November at 7:30PM, at the Geelong AFL stadium.

Bit tired of hearing this comment tbh...and it's everywhere.

Hard to be positive atm, when "We should've lost, but we didn't" is the most common comment to be heard after a game.

Well, if I remember correctly you were going to scream if we failed to win one of the first four games :-)

If winning three out of four, one of them being a derby, does not do the trick then I don't know any longer what it takes to be positive. I sure know that I wouldn't want to swap places with VIC, top of the table will do me nicely, thank you very much.

We are struggling with injuries, that's why the engine is stuttering. We had three players limp off in the last two games, two of them starting midfielders. That's the main challenge here.

Love seeing all these people attacking the players for today's performance.

Yeah, would love to see some of you go out there and try and play top quality football in the humidity and heat that was felt by all of us sitting in the stands. Oh, and do that with a packed oppo defence, your key playmaker off injured in the early stages of the first half, a ref who seemed to have an inability to let the game flow, and some players who have been carrying niggles since the derby, are returning from injury, or have just arrived from Europe.

Now was it what we wanted, expected? Of course not. There are issues. But FFS some of the hysteria and BS coming from so-called fans of WSW...pull your fooking heads in. How many of those who are bitching & moaning now, with 10 points in the locker and top of the table, would've been creaming their jeans to see a similar status after games like those we played against Newcastle when we lost 1-5? Jesus Christ...it wasn't until we got to the fourth game of that legendary first season that we scored our first win. When Popa left us Foxe couldn't buy a win and then Gombau came in and our season died further in the arse. We outplayed Brisbane twice last season and at times looked like we were blitzing them, yet still couldn't beat them (and brain fades cost us goals that this go round we're not letting in).

You want to lecture the players on playing for the club, or Babbel for how he's coaching then have another look at the table, look at where we are at now, where we have been, and then give yourself an uppercut.

    Agree 100%.

There is a fat arsehat that sits directly behind me, he hasn’t seen his toes in 30 years.  Not sure why he comes, he seems to hate all the players, especially Georgevski, and Fussbolgot, as for Lopar, his view ‘yea not bad’ but he needs to catch the ball. His teen son is a moron who has to have basic explanations of the game. And they just don’t shut up, all game. At some I’m going to snap.

What the **** was that low humming ear piercing noise they played over the speaker system before the kick off to both halves? Man that was annoying as all ****. ** Note to Wanderers - Please let the RBB do the pre match entertainment.

I didn't mind that sound (except I mainly noticed it at the start of the 2nd half).

I think it's meant to be a sort of electronic drum roll...to build suspense...or that's the intention  ....... I'm guessing.

Nevertheless, the walkout was the flattest I can ever remember.  Devoid of excitement. Awful.

I did definitely notice what you refer to as the 2nd half began...and thought 'OK - that must be an attempt to build some sort of drama....'

Re the RBB - great work as always (ecxept fot the choice of the first chant).

Special thumbs up to our drummers. Powerful,  energetic ( and a little bit experimental/creative last night??) I don't understand how that level of intensity can be maintained for 45+ minutes × 2.

For mine, they were the best performances of the night ( along with Lopar's).

    Thankyou. :good::good:

    Ohhh you have my sympathy!!.

    Don't snap.

Go find yourself a new seat.

There are thousands to choose from atm...and I can't see anyone objecting.

Someone like that, except foully abusive when asked to tone it down, spoilt game after game for me and  half a bay full of his neighbours for 2.5 seasons.

Either way...don't  put up with it, or it will spoil your experience.

But tread carefully if you are going to say something to him.

    Good luck!

    Hi mate

I shouldn't have quoted your post directly. I didn't mean for my comment to be a direct retort to yours.

I don't think you do remember correctly, though.

I've never said or even thought such a thing (...well, not that I can recall) :unknw:

I just don't really like the feeling, game after game, that we won when we were not the better team.

Yes...winning ugly is a thing, and it's certainly better than losing. But it's not..... satisfying, and it feels hollow.

    That's all I meant.

Point take re our injuries...it's a worry.

i don't blame AM for our struggles. he is a finisher who is being given nothing to finish. he is meant to stay central so he can be in the box when the ball comes in. you don't want a player like him running the channels. in the build he needs players moving off the ball to play it to.

they played 5 at the back to nullify our strength (atm - hopefully we will be more balanced when everyone is fit) which is pace/movement in the wide area (duke, yeboah with georgievski overlapping). once schwegler went off we had a CB (tass) playing in central midfield with a ball winner (baccus) and grozos who was struggling to get in the game. there was no one off ball movement and no one who could get into space either with the ball or without it - roar sat deep and compact and said 'play through us if you can' and we couldn't. this is where the problem was. muller changed things instantly once he came on (I thought he was going to deck yeboah when he took that ball off his toe just after he came on lol.) - he needs to play as the 10 and I think adam needs to play instead of yeboah to stretch the defence a bit more (like we did in melbourne).

it is not all doom and gloom. defensive structure is pretty good - we mostly only gave up long range shots or shots from difficult angles.

Yep....Muller was just about to pull the trigger and Yeboah took it off him.....lol.

I know he is young and inexperienced but Mo Adam is a better option than Yeboah at present.

Can I ask those of you who know how to analyse the finer points of the game....

Although the Roar held us to a draw, had a higher rate of possession, and forced our keeper to stretch for dazzling saves, with their numerous shots on goal, did they play as badly as some comments here suggest (Roar is sh*t etc)?

No.....and WU will be no pushover next weekend.

Last season Wellington under Rudan made the playoffs.......WSW under Babbel didn't. I would never under estimate WU as opponents.

i love how some here are saying if you criticise you are not a true fan.......yea, in reality we have not looked good apart from against victory we did extremely well in that match, a lucky win against CCM, a draw against roar and a lucky win against fc doesnt have me convinced, i dont give a **** if we are last i am a wanderers fan no matter what

we didnt look lazy we just didnt look good, we are much improved since last season but lets not pretend we are going to stay on the top of the ladder if we continue playing like we have in 3 out of the 4 matches we have played in, that said against sydney fc the sheer determination to stop the ball from going into the net was impressive that is something we did not have last season

Yeah there were times he had it and was looking to play it on to someone and I was thinking “here we go!” but the pass just went astray or a defender got a toe in or something.

But his insertion in the team also seems to have stagnated Duke and Yeboah a bit. Like they are uncertain how to move around a big guy up front. Probably not used to playing with one. And it IS more difficult. If you have a 9 who will come into channels, then other players can move into the spaces he leaves. If not, the options for the wide guys are lessened. Duke in particular suits drifting in to the striker role and then back out again.

It seems we also really need a central midfielder (or two) who is naturally attacking. Some players will play the ball in to a forward and automatically look to make a run beyond, some instinctively play it in and sit. We definitely need a Muller who clearly has an attacking mentality. Baccus and Schwegler don’t, and Grozos might as well not have been on the park yesterday. I think he was hiding a bit.

And yeah Roar stifled us well. We were trying to break them down but constantly finding the wrong option.

BUT at the same time if the big guy’s main job is to finish then he needs to do better than the soft headers and scuffed shots that we have been getting.

Yeah I mouthed off about Brisvegas dragging us down to their level in my frustration last night but, and I can’t remember who said it, they are stacked with lower league English professionals and that’s how they played with my limited tactical knowledge. Well organised, good aggression in defence and muscled us off the ball well.

The game was poor, the refereeing was poor (you only have to look at the WU/Vic game to see the difference it makes when a game is stop start or when it is allowed to flow) which led to a dire stalemate.  Roar played like Roar have played all year so far, dire, strangling stop start football their games so far have had foul counts of 30 every game, they have only scored one goal.. Once again an early forced subsitution did not help us but we were poor today and it means poor performing players, like Yeboah need to be left on when you have to waste a sub early. Think young Wilmering needs to have a sit for a while, done a great job but looks tired a bit scared to hold/want the ball now and just needs a few weeks to think about it again.  Our crossing into the area was diabolical especially when we have a 7ft tall Meir in there.  The kids we had to put in the middle won;t win games for us we need to realise that, it is just more of a hope they don;t lose us games in reality, we struglled to hold the ball or get any control in the middle when Shweigler went off.  Good to see Zielger back, good to see Muller looking dangerous.  People saying we are playing poorly are correct but you dont win a championship by being brilliant all the time you win it by collecting the scratchy points when you arent travelling well and playing poorly and being up top playing this way so far this season is still so much better than the alternative..

Yeah no doubt Adam comes on if we don’t have to make two defensive subs. Might have shaken things up a bit.

If people can't say what they think/feel here...well, where can they?
