  • Wanderers Storm Clear

    mack

The highest ever crowd for a non-Derby A-League regular season fixture at Parramatta Stadium saw the Wanderers storm home in the second half to take a 2-0 win, and go four points clear at the top of the A-League ladder.

After the FFA finally saw sense and agreed to review their banning process, a near full house was expected with the RBB back in full voice. 17,073 fans turned out including a sizeable Melbourne away contingent, and all were treated to a wondeful game of football.

It didn't take long for the Wanderers to pierce the Melbourne defence. 6 minutes into the match, the high press of the Victory allowed Mitch Nichols to put Mark Bridge through on goal. With just the keeper to beat, his touch let him down at the critical moment, he went wide, and slipped, his shot dribbling wide.

Victory had their best chance of the first half on 18 minutes. Andrew Redmayne spilled a routine pickup from a Victory corner, Georgevski hooked the rebound over his shoulder into the path of Besart Berisha, the Albanian striker launched himself at the ball but at knee height he could do little to direct it on target, the ball bounced off his knee, crashed into the crossbar then was cleared away.

The second half opened with a goal for the Wanderers. Scott Neville placed a perfect ball in behind the Victory left fullback for Romeo Castelen to run onto, the winger placing a first time pass into the path of an unmarked Mark Bridge who had a tap-in from 6 yards to break the 0-0 deadlock. He nearly had a second moments later, a lob from inside the box at a corner hitting the top of the crossbar.

Romeo Castelen was the clear best on the park and in the 78th minute he finally had a reward for weeks of effort, albeit with a little help from Victory custodian Danny Vukovic, who spilled a fierce drive into the back of the net.

It was the 7th win in a row for the Wanderers, who are 4 points ahead of Brisbane Roar even after the Roar came from behind against Wellington, as well as puttin the Victory back on their heels despite their game in hand.

Both Sydney's and Victory's depth isn't very great, add the ACL and potential injuries to the likes of Berisha, Finkler, bozanic, Milos, Faty, or brosque.

They could be in for a tough time in the late stages of the season.

They will buy in ACL contractors and need to play rotation Popa style. Muscat and Arnie have been so lucky to have Popa as a pioneer in this department.

The difference being that both Muscat and Arnie are inflexible. Without their stars and having to adapt to different styles of play - they'll have nothing.

We're in a great position and like Bozza is saying, it's not impossible to string along 15 in a row playing like last night.

Also think it should be illegal what Castelan did to Georgievski tonight. That's his best game for the Wanderers.

What's your thoughts on the game Lord Pax? On MV:

    - Valeri seemed a big loss tonight in midfield

    - Presing was good but hard to do that for 90 minutes

    - Front three seemed very quiet

Our whole midfield was bullied. Mahazi is a solid player but just isn't a Valeri or Millgan type that crashes in and protects the front four.

Pressing from you guys was insane, although I think we had a better second half.

Whole attack was misfiring. Just an off night.

I disagree. For a good portion of the first half it was still a very even contest but you guys were winning everything in the air and cutting off most play just in front of your box. I thought it was your second half that not necessarily let you down but we just came out stronger. I thought Finkler had a great game, he was dangerous all night.

Been said, but great night. RBB were mega, lots of first timers around us in black and white, I bantered with many, helped shuffle seats and squeeze families and groups in, encouraged chants. The boys on the pitch felt us. Oh, and Hektor is a legend.

My kids substitute 'fudge' for ****! But you know what, some things in life aren't G-rated.

Wanderers (Melbourne) Storm Clear. Well I did tire of last season's Wanderers Dominate but Draw Mack Attack headlines. Magic night. I'll say it again Jamieson is a Bulut. His mongrel on field and celebration afterward in front of 56 was something. Seccos really do need to clear out of NT. Standing on seats isnt terror and A League cameramen endlessly filming us...mate we ain't your performing poodle and the club could make that clear to some of these clowns. Anyways Popa In and the Doomsday Experts can start publicly apologizing.

If Castelens shot hits Vukovic and it goes out (like it does 99% of the time lol) I could of seen that going 1-1

Melbourne were never out of the game by any stretch of the imagination.

With the way Victory started, coupled with some of Bridges missed opportunities. Looking back I thought it could of been a different contest.

Sometimes that ball just lands in the right positions.

Can we talk about Vidosic? He hasn't lived up to marquee standards and if King Mitch keeps it up, I think we should make him our next marquee.

He became a starting player as of Rd 4. We've won seven games since then. Still doesn't have the fitness to play 90 minutes, but what has been achieved so far with him in the side is fine with me. He is competing for a spot with Bridge, Castelen and Nichols who all have almost three months more pre-season prep under the belt than him.

    The goals will come.

were playing so well with vidosic still not at 100% of his full capability plus Pio out and not at his peak. Add to the squad that we got gol gol back to cause more havoc to defences around the country, we will only improve as a team as the matches come

I wonder if Pio makes it to the end of the season....if not then surely Andreu should be our visa marquee?

Gallop, Lowy Jr, ADP, and co were up the back....I heard ADP shake hands and say it was a great game

Berisha was giving Alberto a gobful and Alberto would just give him the wry smile...our back four did a great job

What's with the Bridge 4 goals in a row thing?

He scored 2, missed a game through injury and has scored 2 more.

If he scored in match day 1, missed the next 25 weeks through injury and then scored on match day 27, does that still count as 2 in a row?

Alberto is so cool and calm. Berisha was carrying on, Alberto just looked at him and smiled. He's such a clas player, he makes it all look so easy.

Dimas had his best game, was everywhere totally bossed them

Best Castelan game by a mile, not only did he show all the tricks but there was end product.

As in cricket a bowler takes 2 wickets on the last 2 balls of 1st innings, then another opening his bowling in innings 2 gets another, that's a hat trick. So to answer your question...YES...

All I was thinking through that first half was: people complain about how we need high quality marquees/foreigners. These unknown Spaniards, combined with Nichols, Castelen, against the likes of FBK, Berisha, Barbarouses, Bozanic.

That was just football at its best. Anyone with a spare 90 mins, watch that game again.

    This

The call for marquees is to attract day trippers and euro snobs.

Last two games have both been a really high standard some really good players in the league.

Where did that Aspro to City rumour come from? I haven't seen or heard it anywhere before or since Chubba posted it in this thread. Is this a rumour started to increase SST ratings?

Ugh, wrong thread. Was meant to go in the Squad Development Thread.

Back into the game. I watched the replay last night. Right after Fathead scored and the crowd started the dis chant, the telecast went to vision from the drone above. The view was great, the atmosphere was rocking. Simon Hill aptly commented "Ladies and Gentleman, this is football"

    Romeo's comments

"The main thing that I'm focussing on is to stay fit and play games because I know my ability and the good things will then come," he said later.

"Last season was tough also because of all the travel we had to do.

"We are playing a totally different system this year and it is enjoyable to be part of this team.

"We play a possession based game where attack is the main focus.

"If you have the ball the other team cannot score so it is less running defensively.

"We press very high and that is very good for me because now we win the ball up higher and we can be more dangerous so it is very pleasing to play in such a system.

"The boys did fantastic today and when we went back to the dressing-room we all said how unbelievably well we pressed them.

"I think Besart Berisha had no space to breathe because he had three, four defenders around him.

"All over the pitch team mates were backing each other up.

"That was the key today. We were very aggressive when we did not have the ball and we kept our composure when we had it. It was a great win today."

Castelen said he was pleased to note that the team was turning its strong performances into results.

This was the Wanderers' seventh straight victory that kept Tony Popovic's team at the top of the ladder after 10 rounds.

"We started the league with a home defeat to Brisbane but the coach rams into us every day that we can beat any team," he said.

"We have always had the belief because we train every day and we see what we can do.

"Playing well and not winning makes you lose your belief but now the results are coming.

"The scoresheets are matching our performance. We've beaten a good side today but we have to keep improving.

"I think we have to give Victory respect. They are a good team with great players."

The most unbelievable thing I noticed last night and I had to check twice.

I saw someone sitting in their seat with a Matchday programme!  I was certain these things were now rarer than hen's teeth.  Where the **** are these things of late.  My kids are almost set to riot if they don't manage to get one next home game.
