  • Wanderers Surrender Lead & 3 Points To Wellington

    mack

Wellington Phoenix mounted a stunning second half comeback to overturn an away deficit to defeat the Western Sydney Wanderers by 3-1 tonight at Parramatta.

Wanderers manager Tony Popovic dropped in-form central defender Matthew Spiranovic in favour of club captain Matthew Beauchamp, and that choice may have been the catalyst for the defensive disruption that saw the Phoenix rise from the ashes of being behind 1-0 to score three goals in a 15 minute blitzkrieg late in the second half.

The two sides went into the half-time break locked at 0-0, the best and arguably only real chance of the half falling to Shinji Ono after Jerome Polenz lobbed a cross that Ono met from near the penalty spot, it cracked off the crossbar and fell away from goal.

Western Sydney were the more dominant of the two sides, and on the hour mark they took the lead. Good interplay between Youssouf Hersi & Shinji Ono resulted in a chipped ball over the Wellington defence that Mark Bridge toed past the onrushing Glen Moss.

Only 6 minutes later the lead was gone. The left hand defence fell apart, Adam D'Apuzzo, Aaron Mooy and Iacopo La Rocca weren't able to stop a one-two pass between Stein Huysegems & Matthew Ridenton, Huysegems broke to the byline and stabbed the ball across the 6 yard box. Jerome Polenz expected a cutback instead of the cross and was out of position, allowing Tyler Boyd to stretch out to knock the ball home.

Wellington took the lead in the 77th minute. A poor pass from Jerome Polenz caused Mooy to pick up the ball with his back to Huysegems, the Belgian striker nipped in to steal the ball away, turned Nikolai Topor-Stanley inside out before a well taken finish to the back post that Covic wasn't able to get a hand on.

The implosion of the Wanderers was confirmed 5 minutes after the second Wellington goal. Hersi was caught in possession trying to run through the middle of the park deep in his defensive half and lost the ball. One pass later it was on the flanks, and delivered low and hard into the box. Huysegems secured his brace with a neat back heel finish. The Wanderers could not even conjure up a consolation goal as time ticked away, their play became increasingly forced and with it came turnovers and frustration. Wellington smartly kept the ball down in the corner occupied by a knot of their travelling away supporters, securing the biggest upset of the season thus far.

To add insult to injury, Jerome Polenz picked up a late yellow card that will see him suspended for the Sydney Derby on the 11th of January. Wellington's three points lift them to 8th place, the Wanderers remain 4 behind Brisbane and 4 ahead of Victory, those two teams clashing on Saturday the 4th.

The Wanderers next match is the Sydney Derby, on Saturday the 11th of January at Parramatta Stadium.

    Ouch.

RBB came through loud and clear last night, excellent effort.

Will be back for the derby!

The game is done. We have to learn from the mistakes, congratulate Wellington and applaud the RBB... we have bigger and better things to take.

Enjoyed my first ever WSW game last night. I was told your atmosphere was "subdued" last night, but I thought it was superb. It really puts the soulless Premier League to shame, and it's great to see such positive support to your side, regardless of the score.

A few observations as an outsider:

    1) The RBB is up there with the most vocal group of fans I've seen, absolutely superb.

    2) was disappointed not to be able to stand in RBB after being told it was sold out, but there was loads of empty seats

    3) your ticket prices are superb. Half the price I pay back home, and nufc are the cheapest in the premier league

    4) I've never been to a game where such a high % of people were wearing their replica kit. Great to see.

    5) great to have a few people come up and have a bit of a chat to us because they were interested in my nufc background

All in all, loved it (despite the last 20 mins!) and gutted I won't make another game on my trip.

    Go the toon

Wellington seem to have this ability to turn a game into absolute **** and make the opposition lower to their level. They did this last night and then when they stepped up a gear we were still asleep. It's almost hypnotic the effect they have on a game. You are very sleeeepy... Then bang! Well done to them though, they're the ones with the 3 points.

Spot on. The Nix are also the slowest play of set pieces side I have ever seen. They take aaaaagggeeeesss over everything! They time waste from the first minute to the last kick. The game seems to move in slow motion but the time ticks by quickly!

I haven't enjoyed a Nix game I have attended yet,

their goal keeper took about an hour to kick the ball every single time, was painful

also i think it was great after the match when the players approached the RBB and they started chanting win or lose

any person that leaves early when we are loosing can hand their membership in. It doesn't matter if your in the stands or where. It doesn't matter if there is a naked chick outside calling you to spend the rest of your life with her. if you are there when we win, then you need to be there when we loose. its simple. its not like there is 80 000 people and traffic will be bad. it was ridiculous watching the stands leave early. granted it wasn't heaps, but still disappointing. remember win or loose we will always support you.

Totally agree. It was horrible to see. My bay became half empty just after the Poznan. We should always wait after the game and clap for our lads whether they win or lose. We should always remind them that we're proud of em no matter what

AANNNYYYwayyyyy.... It will be interesting to see how they bounce back mentally from this, and also the MVFC game. They had the 2 games in close succession, with a mixed bag of outcomes. I wouldn't want to be in the video room watching the replay as a team hahah

    Sorry haha...

Anyways, it was a bit sad to see some people leaving, especially in the back rows of bay 55. They did not cheer all game even after everyone was telling them to cheer. Then they end up leaving 10 mins early anyway. Very disappointed. Just need to get one of the boys on a megaphone and just yell in their ears until they start cheering like last year. Overall i still had a blast yesterday and no matter what!

I guess the people who leave early just come to the match for the result, and if "their team" don't get the result - then their thought process is along the lines of: "Well, my team isn't going to win, so why stay?"

What I do find more stupid is people leaving in the 81st or so minute. Did you people not watch Roar v Mariners in a certain Grand Final?

Most statistics were even. Possession, passes, goal attempts etc. But there was one statistic that I found interesting considering the final result: Shots on target WSW 6, WPX 3

i starting to think that if we don't shoot at the goal more often, we aren't going to win matches.

100% of the shots you never take don't go in.  :woah:

I have said on many posts before that our biggest problem is that we cannot shoot on goal. Mark my words this will hurt us come the business end of the season. We had plenty of chances to put the game to rest but the final third is really struggling for that killer punch.

We need 10 chances to score one goal!!!! Not good enough.

Finishing practice required...big time.....as has been the problem since our birth!!!

I guess this is true life in the A-League. RBB are loyal and true, but fans of all clubs (the non actives, the non loyals, the 'normals,') will always walk out at the first signs of troubles. As long as the true fans stick there, thats all that matter. Some stooges in our own fan base will always rather walk out than see us lose. Such is life in sport.

please don't start the whole active supporters are better than other supporters ****. from where i was in bay 52, i saw plenty of RBB leaving early as well.

their will always be a percent of people who will leave early no matter what membership they have bought.

instead of criticising those who leave early, why not praise those who stayed, sang, supported their team, applauded the players as they left the pitch?

we're not sydney fc fans, we aren't the cove.

relax. it was our biggest home defeat ever. some people were bound to be pissed off about it. it happens, and will continue to happen.

trying to take the high ground and having pot shots at other supporters will lead to a toxic environment like the one that fills allianz stadium.

How about a left field solution to the left fullback problem. There is a stream of thought that D'Apuzzo is not up to the standard of the rest of the team..... our alternatives (Cole and Heffernan are both too slow).  Yet, we have 3 good players fighting for the 2 defensive midfield roles.  Now, remembering that Polenz came to Aus as a defensive midfielder and has since been converted to right fullback.  How about we try Poljak at left fullback and leave Mooy and LaRocca at defensive mids?

3 games in 9 days and it showed especially our full backs. I have never seen Polenz be so un influential in a game than yesterday, he was slow getting back. Mooy was terrible. Missed Poljak and Spira big time, Juric had no service all night and our wide men too for that matter.

Best thing about last night Shinji 'Tensai' Ono was oozing class every time he had the ball. Big game for the little man he needed that just in time for these pelicans next week.

It sounds bad but I'm going to interpret that as what you probably meant to say, which is:

"People who truly support the club, as in actively support the club, be it by singing and dancing for at least ninety minutes, or those who give it their all to try to rock up at each and every home game (and some away games), or spread the good word of WSW even if they can't get to games, etc. will stick by.

The bandwagoners will leave at the first sign of trouble. Such is life."

And that, I can agree with.
