  • Wanderers Throw Away Three Points

    mack

Perth Glory have come from behind in a storming 4 goal second half to defeat the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-2 in Perth tonight.

It was the same old tale for Western Sydney this season, throwing away golden chances with defensive lapses gifting their opposition goals, marking the 6th time this season the Wanderers have scored first but still lost the match.

Romeo Castelen opened the scoring in the 13th minute, getting onto the end of a lofted through ball from Iacopo La Rocca and slotting it past Danny Vukovic.

Glory got back into the game after the break, Dino Djulbic crossing on his right foot into the box Yusuke Tanaka's attempted clearance bounced off his head and back towards the goal. Five of the Wanderers defence stood stock still or ran off to halfway, leaving Aspropotamitis one on one against Richard Garcia, Garcia getting the better of the young central defender and his nod back across goal saw the unmarked Sidnei with an opportunity he couldn't and didn't miss.

Perth took the lead 67 minutes in through Rostyn Griffiths, a simple in-swinging corner that Ante Covic flew out of his goal to try and punch, only to be beaten by Griffiths with La Rocca unable to do anything to prevent Griffiths heading home.

Wanderers talisman Kerem Bulut hit back immediately, Perth tarrying on the ball deep in their own half. Chris Harold was forced into a loose pass that went straight to La Rocca, he found Bulut in acres of space, his calm sidefoot finish left Vukovic with no chance.

Josh Risdon won the game for the Glory with 2 minutes of regulation to go. He powered through the midfield, beating Steve Kuzmanovski for pace, with neither Jason Trifiro or La Rocca electing to close him down the winger blasted a rocket into the top corner of the goal that not even a full length dive by Covic could keep out.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne City on Friday the 3rd of April at Parramatta Stadium.

Good to see the usual suspects soul searching again, blaming everyone and everything associated with the Western Sydney Wanderers name after a game we only just lost.

But how many times have we 'just lost'? A loss is a loss, believe it or not, and our season of 'just losing' has the team equal bottom on points. I'm amazed that the pitchforks haven't appeared, to be honest.

Edit: as for me, I'd like the coach to have another half season to turn things around. Hopefully it can be a half season of minimal disruption, too (and if that means tanking in the ACL to come good in the A-League, so be it).

So that would've been something like the 9th or 10th game we took the lead by scoring the first goal but failed to win this season (calling any stats mavens, care to look it up).

On the very thinnest of surface level readings that would indicate we have trouble with counters and with playing out the entire game, which in turn must be at least partly due to fatigue and injury.

After 11 games in 33 days, it's a fooking miracle we're even able to mount a team, let alone put 6 away in two games in three days, both on the road.

On the broadcast they said we've taken the lead 8 times in the A-League, lost 6 of them (including last night).

Kerem with the ARMATR shirt, guy is a legend - is that the first time in A League history that happened ?

And I dare say, the last!

That loss was overshadowed by that wird winged woman..WTF was that about, like some LSD throw back to the 70`s.

1st half, played well and looking good for the ACL. As for anyone upset and carrying on like spoilt kids coz their team didn't win AGAIN!... We don't need you and your negativity as supporters. Look at the big picture. Manfred nailed it on the head as have others. You can't expect to play 11 games in 33 days and be as competitive as you were at the start of the run, without injuries, salary cap issues and fatigue.

For those questioning Popa's ability, you really are sad individuals who spend too much time on FIFA manager.

has Popa lost it. we took both kelmar and perkatis to both brisbane and perth  and none got minutes. at least the sqaud should have been freshened  up a little. we r playing our ACM jap guy as a dM what a waste when we have kalmar and perkatis there. i dont understand the value of haliti on the park and also bringing on trifrio . NTs has to go or get him to change his style of football. Aspro not ready for the big games as get why to soft in going forward.

Honest;y I would have liked Kalmar to come on in the 2nd half after we equalised to have more control in the midfield. Perth were up in our faces as soons as we scored the 2nd and their 3rd goal was coming.

And that 3rd goal, while it was a great strike, our boys were ball watching and waiting for that perth player to come to them.

    Link to comment

Many many more positives to take out of that game than negatives.

Our passing is much better compared to early and even mid season games. Less head ping pong, more ball at the feet, and better control on the ball. We're playing 3 upfront (errm I think its 3 upfront from what I saw - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :) ) rather than a lone striker, so Popa is showing that he can change formation, And in my mind, we are taking control of the game much more frequently than we have previously, which have resulted in us scoring goals.

Of course I am gutted we lost - and its obvious that we need work on a) dropping into defensive play in the last ten mins, trying to weather a attack storm, rather than keeping the ball in mid field and pushing forward, and b) our lack of clinical finish. Haliti missing that goal was diabolical. Those misses hurt and lose games.

So gutted, but much better from the boys and lots to be building on

Oh, and not to upset anyone on here, but for me personally, I didn't feel we missed Spira or Tomi.

I think we miss Spiranovic whenever he doesn't play, but agree re Juric, who has been pretty lacklustre all season, and especially after the Asian Cup. Bulut has settled into the squad fairly well, and the guy is nowhere near 100% match fit.

You know what...last night before the final goal (which to be honest was a miracle shot) if anyone had said 'care to take a draw away from Perth'? i'd have said yes please. And whilst it was a story of missed opportunities and bad luck, the team inspires more confidence overall and dare I say belief in a potential win than they did a few weeks back. At the risk of talking old Keating economic speak I think we're somewhere down around the bottom of that J curve and hopefully looking at climbing back. Get a fully rested and prepped team on the park with our first choice players in the relevant pozzies plus maybe cope a bit of luck we used to get with regularity up until the ACL final and we'd be definitely Top 6.

    Win or lose...as fooking always!

    Link to comment

That is exactly why the offseason will be the rebuilding phase. With no ACL at the backend of next season, players won't feel so terrible. Next year the players we have now would have geled, and Popovic won't be back stabbed by 'fans'.

We are playing good football. As supporters we have the ACL to look forward to, and the players can see their families for the next month.

I don't understand how we can have so many negative people right now. It should be easy to establish the good times from the bad after the last couple of months compared to now.

Played good football but ran out of gas and concede **** soft goals. Proud of the boys and any team that has to play us won't have it easy as were actually putting together some good attacking play which will do our acl defense good.

We again were dominating first half and perth didn't bother to press us until we scored and we should have got points for the effort up until we run out of energy.

RBB were fantastic but the dragon lady was a bit weird.

Can't wait for next season when Romeo will be the leagues best player feeding Bulut the golden boot, Ruka not so much.

Gutted to lose after a good performance.

Don't worry Burgerman, although Ruka will still cough up the easy opportunities he will score the leagues best goal next season.

Some on the full volley with his right foot. It will be beautiful.

This post is for the users on this website (I think most of you) who are still very much invested in Popovic (Popovic is god in my books)

At the away pub a few stories were exchanged and some of the boys were in town and saw the players. After some pleasantries were exchanged the question was asked what this season has been like for them. The players said it's been the toughest season. They've seen little of their families, family events have been missed and the desire to play is very low due to stress and fatigue (and possibly a range of issues that have been raised on this website that they are not at liberty to say)

A lot of you will still be convinced that Popovic isn't playing tactics X, Y, Z or some of you (who I don't believe are actual Wanderers fans) will still say PopaOut.

But I hope this provides some insight to you into whatever theory you're invested in.

Thanks for that insight man. To those who say POPA out, I hope this gives them some clarity. POPA is God. A long time ago I started doubting my trust in him and he made a complete fool of me. From that day I pledged my unwavering allegiance with POPA.

We do have to differentiate from putting **** on our team and giving constructive criticism. two different things and we as fans have every right to give feedback. I'm never going to say POPA out etc but I'll still put my thoughts out there on where I think our weaknesses were and where our strengths were.

I don't like brown nosers who just give **** to those who give constructive feedback, so they can score points with 'real fans'. In my view they're blind and quite frankly, just lame.

I think we all know deep down that if we could put our best 11 out week after week it would be us and the victards fighting it out this year. The frustration is we haven't been able to do that.  I thought on Saturday we didn't look too bad and its far from our best 11.

The draw in the next few weeks is good, hopefully players will start to become available again and we can have a good end to the season.

the challenge for us fans is to

    1. get more than 10 thou to each home game (12 should be minimum)

    2. take 3 thou to the sauce bottles.

    Mick summed it up well.

As for the game itself all of us in Perth had a mother ******* great time :D
The pub and staff were great, the stadium staff weren’t too bad, the seccies… well you could play Benny Hill music whilst they were rushing about in hilarity.

Anyway, apart from the bantering and abuse going back and forth with the Shed’s lame *** people, we were applauded as that end of the stadium was leaving and we waited so thank you to those who did appreciate the show we gave them inadvertently.

The day after we had a ‘recovery session’ at the Matisse Beach Club house (basically a small neat version of Ivy Pool) where we had a laugh, drinks and a good time. Thanks to the AMARTR boys for that and also for carrying our drums back to the pub.

Perth was the best trip I’ve ever been on.

So what? All teams have the occasional bad season, welcome to sport. Too many people have been spoiled by our success and just assumed that after our first two seasons we were going to keep making the grand final forever. We began this season by winning the Asian Champions League on our first attempt. Too many short memories. This is our first ever poor season and people are carrying on like this is yet another season of poor performances. Get over yourselves.

Just pretend you're Jets fans for a second. They've been poor for over half a decade!

And their excuses have been poor recruitment, crap coaches, terrible owners and management. Its been a disaster all over the place.

Us....well we know why. The players are running on empty. Physically and emotionally drained from the later stages of the ACL to going to the CWC and playing an insane amount of games this past year. Its the most any HAL club has ever had to do.

Most sane people understand this and aren't too fussed with this season.

We'll be there are thereabouts next season after the boys get to have a ***** rest and holiday in the off season this year! (then a proper preseason)
