  • Wanderers Throw Away Win Against Victory

    mack

Hayden Foxe's time as the Western Sydney Wanderers manager has ended with a fourth draw in a row, as his side threw away a win against the butchers of Melbourne Victory tonight.

The tone of the game was set 3 minutes into the first half, as Mitch Austin scythed down Brendan Hamill on the right flank. Leeroy George the Victory marquee took advantage of poor defence from Alvaro Cejudo to fire in at Janjetovic, who blocked the shot & recovered it at the second attempt. Austin followed up his early yellow with an early red. In the 24th minute Austin decided to intercept a Brendan Hamill free kick at point blank range and the referee had no choice but to issue a second yellow card.

The Wanderers took advantage of the one man advantage with the Spanish three amigos combining to open the scoring. Alvaro Cejudo played in Raul Llorente and the fullback chipped a lovely cross to the middle of the 6 yard box that the marquee Oriol Riera couldn't miss.

Mark Milligan was lucky to avoid following Austin down the tunnel, as he received a yellow card after 37 minutes, then smashed Jumpei Kusukami with a studs up lunge that in most leagues he would have done well to have avoided a straight red for. Peter Green was perhaps wary of the criticism that would follow him for taking Victory down to 9 men, but it opens up a question about how a team who were clearly playing dirty were getting away with heavy challenges & lunges against a team trying to play attacking open football.

The VAR was once again a source of controversy minutes before half-time. Jumpei won a clear penalty off Rhys Williams & he was shown a yellow card. Despite this, the VAR jumped in to the ear of Green and decided to spend several minutes checking for no apparent reason, icing Riera who was left standing & waiting to take the shot at goal. After the farcial review, Green made the VAR symbol only to walk over to Williams, who he had already booked just to shown him the yellow card again. Having waited & waited, Riera finally shot & hit it straight into the hands of Lawrence Thomas, leaving the game poised at 1-0 at half-time.

Melbourne Victory regained a sense of momentum after the break, and received a lucky break from the referees to assist in their equaliser. After an incorrectly awarded thrown in lead to a free kick, Leeroy George floated a cross into the area for Thomas Deng to latch onto, and the defender put the ball off the post and in.

Foxe looked dumbfounded on the bench as he called on his substitutes, but the introductions of Santalab & Sotirio couldn't help the vistors find a winner. Sotirio in particular was his typical self where he killed every attack by giving it back to the opposition under no pressure. For yet another game, the Wanderers glacial passing saw their opponents park the bus & hit on the counter, and even as the clock ticked into the 94th minute of stoppage time they were still content to knock the ball between the central defenders. On an individual level fullbacks Llorente & Hamill were the pick of the Wanderers but as a collective this was a disastrous performance against a team lacking their best players and down to 10 men.

Josep Gombau has a lot of work on to turn this tired looking draw specialist team into one that will close out games and threaten the likes of Sydney FC & Melbourne City, whom the Wanderers next match is against at AAMI Park this weekend.

It is good he saw what he saw. Unfortunately that is team we have become. Nervous, scared to win, lacking confidence..

    That’s what gets me.

    What are they afraid of?

They play like a bunch of nervous wrecks.

It could be anything. Coaching, lack of structure,  lack of confidence, lack of ability, tiredness? That can only be worked out in training.

Only had 3 shots on target the entire game, two were the missed penalty and the goal in the first half.

What kind of fitness program has the team been on? Why does the team fade out and look so listless in the back half of the second half of matches? It seems to me that the team expends so much energy in the first half executing an uptempo, pressing style that they are unable to maintain it for the entire match.

    Not many positives from tonight:

    MVC players are dirty

Green lost control of the game within minutes.

We cannot last a full game

    Foxtel commentary was really bad.

.....but the WSW fans that travelled were great.

Hey, Zelic is always entertaining whether or not you agree with what he has to say.

Victory incredibly lucky to not be down to nine men at half-time, but we still played most of the game with an extra man against  half-strength lineup to begin with. Our problem is that Riera aside, no-one can be relied on to finish anything. Jumpei, perfect example, executes a brilliant turn at the end that almost nobody else in the league could have pulled off, then passes it straight to their player. Summed up his career with us.

I hope Gombau has some fancy training methods to improve our finishing, because otherwise nothing will change. If we could finish though, we would beat everyone.

I agree he is usually entertaining but I don't agree with his theory about common sense. The warning is the yellow card. Once you have the yellow you do not get anymore warnings.

Milligan's telling the ref to F off is easily a second yellow and a few minutes later the lunge at Jumpei could easily have been a straight red....and lucky he didn't break Jumpei's leg.

We are missing a creative playmaker in midfield. Bonevacia is not doing the job.

Definitely, like I've said before, we really miss Nico. Yeah he didn't always have an end product, but you could give him the ball with his back to goal and three players around him, and he would somehow end up on the other side with space. Bonevacia has his qualities but he is no Nico. Or Antonis.

Oh yeah I completely disagree with him on that.

Good summation of the keys points of the game.

Wasn't his role today. He replaced Herd as one of the 2 defensive midfielders. Bridge was CAM like against the Jets.

That's true...ain't Bridge certainly ain't no Nico either. But Roly did find himself in a no.10 role a few times today, with the extra man.

Would be nice if Bridge won a 50/50 ball every now & then.

ANother frustrating night. We are still very much a side lacking that mental toughness to close a game out. There are also still some holes in our squad that just arnt up to scratch to compete with the best sides.

theres a severe lack of winning culture in the side. Lots of talented footballers but we are yet to unlock their true potential and gel the side. But even once that clicks i can see us being undone by tougher sides.

our midfield live and die by Baccus, when hes up were up, but he struggles to to keep the side up.

need much more leadership from someone, Esspecially midfield.

Aspro is not a first grader, desperately lacking Thwaite but even then we need a better quality centre back.

need Parra stadium back to at least be able to fall back on a home game fortress

Zelic is normally the voice of reason, but tonight he almost made me wish for Slater's sycophantic dribble

I think he was getting in the Melbourne Cup spirit early, if you know what I mean.

Frustrating result tonight. But one thing to consider.  Unless I am mistaken, the team is on the same points in round 5 as in season 1, when they won the premiership. All is not lost.

Yeah, the optimistic part of me can see that with better finishing and not dying in the second half, we could easily go on a run. Those are two very difficult things to change though.

Also the competition in just six years is a lot tougher than it was in S1.

Hope he reads the riot act or puts a rocket up their butts at training to make these guys get their act together. Saying that,It is not as dire that we have to fold the club, sack the manager, sack the players or do anything drastic.

The lack of finishing in the opponents final third is hurting us and costing us victories and points.

We had two goal scoring strikers on in the 2nd half and didn't utilise their talents. Last season we were crap and played very poorly and lost. This season we are playing poorly at times but are drawing games.

We have yet to be defeated. It's only 5 games in.

    YES!!

Why do refs allow players to show that level of disrespect in such an obvious way, and let them get away with it??

I'd have loved to have seen the ref pull out a second yellow for that.

Mind you, my understanding is that Llorente said  (very audibly on the Fox coverage) "Your mother's a whore " in Spanish when he had to go off to change his shirt??

As for what Milligan did to Jumpei, yes - it could have been a red.

I can confirm that he did.

Re: only 5 games in, that's a fifth of the season gone already.
