  • Wanderers Win 1-0 In Newcastle

    mack

Mark Bridge looped the ball over the head of Mark Birighitti to give the Wanderers all three points in their away trip to Newcastle overnight.

In front of a crowd of 16,634 that included a large contingent of away supporters it was Newcastle captain Ruben Zadkovich who had the first chance of the game. A flick-on from Adam Taggart broke the Wanderers central defensive line, Zadkovich shot past the diving Nikolai Topor-Stanley, but his shot was weak and Wanderers keeper Ante Covic turned the ball away with his left foot.

The Jets were on top for the opening half-hour but couldn't get their dominance to pay dividends. Like so many times before in football, it was the team who could withstand pressure who took the lead.

Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Aaron Mooy spread the ball wide to Shinji Ono. The Japanese international delivered a perfect cross over to the far post toward Labinot Haliti who took advantage of his opposing number misreading the flight of the ball to nod it back across the face of goal to the back post. Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti looked to come and claim the ball but he faltered and baulked, allowing Mark Bridge the easiest of headed tap-ins into a gaping net. Newcastle appealed in vain for both a foul from Haliti & an offside from Mark Bridge, neither were warranted or forthcoming.

Western Sydney held the lead until half-time and for the rest of the match. Newcastle applied pressure late on but weren't able to force a clear opening, while the Wanderers were unable to land a knockout 2nd goal.

Jaushua Sotirio was named in the match day squad for Western Sydney and he made his debut coming on for Youssouf Hersi in the 77th minute.

The win put the Wanderers 4 points clear of the chasing pack comprised of Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory & Newcastle, although Sydney FC defeated Melbourne Heart on Sunday to bridge the gap between the two Sydney sides to 1 point. Brisbane remain firmly ensconced in 1st place with a 5 point lead.

The Wanderers next match is on Monday the 23rd of December, 7:00PM against the Central Coast Mariners at Parramatta Stadium.

Great terrace performance. Awesome to get the win.

Only downside was Hersi seemed to have one of his lesser games for us. But i should watch replay first!

Does anyone know a good optometrist? Jarred Gillett needs his eyes checked. Either that, or he should have his bank account inspected for random large deposits. Refereeing was awful - for a while there I wasn't sure if we were playing the Newcastle Jets or the Newcastle Knights.

Think he just ran out of puff due to being out for a while. If Bridge and Haliti could finish well instead of just finding the centre of the goal every damn time we'd be so much better off.

It was one of those games where the guys battled their way out of a funk and ended up being the superior team. The first 20 minutes were pretty bad and it was in the same areas where they came unstuck. The left flank was used by the Jets to keep up the pressure and in the centre there were too many easy turnovers. D'Apuzzo, Mooy and Spira seemed to go into a shell at times,Bridge's shooting was a little wayward and Ono was not sticking passes where he wanted or needed. Thankfully Ante was rock solid tonight and that was the base the team needed. As soon as the puff went out of the Jets' first big effort Hersi and Polenz took control down the right with Ono chiming in, and then the goal came which further deflated the home team.

Most everyone after then had a good to great game (I thought it was Labi's best all season), but for the Fox Sports guys commentators to go 3-2-1 to Bridge Haliti and Spira was wrong. Polenz and Hersi were easily in the top 3 and you can pick Ono, Covic or Labinot for the other pozzie. Hersi was rusty yeah but him and JP owned the right flank. Sotirio looked very promising and yes, I know I said in the other thread that KAK was reasonable and I will stick with that. He wasn't superlative however considering his lack of game time this season and injury problems earlier getting game time tonight was a decent effort.

I don't think we have turned the corner 100% contrasted to our great form last season or up to this season's derby, but you could see the guys were playing far more composed and organised in the last half particularly. Juric's return will hel a lot and perhaps the tactical challenges imposed on the team by Popa's changes in personnel and style will be fully digested by Christmas. What is great consider is how many players in the squad have had meaningful game time before the ACL comes around, plus we are starting to slip away from those behind us (especially Dynamo Woy Woy & the Jest). All we need now is the Heartless to knock off ESFC tomorrow (which I think they can do)

Ono's touch was off all game and Hersi was so-so going forward, good link up as usual yes but wasn't able to beat his man and deliver a meaningful cross at all.

Galloway did a good job on Hersi, we played well after 20 minutes and built up well and yet again made a few scoring opportunities can't wait for Juric to return to finish them off

Well last time the heartless won a game was against the smurfs in February (3-1) and last time the heartless won outside of Melbourne was nearly 2 years ago against the smurfs winning 4 nil. I BELIEVE the heartless can win too but I could be bias as well.

Well I picked Adelaide & Brisbane (though didn't get the score right) and got the win & score for the Wanderers this round so why not go the Heartless. And ESFC deserve to lose against a lower ranked team after getting over the likes of Heart, Phoenix with no class wharsoever

Whilst he wasn't perfect, I think D'Apuzzo had one of his better games of late.

It's great to have a win, but it could've been a lot easier if the shots didn't go straight into the keeper's hands!

I wouldn't take too much away from the jets. I think they were unlucky to not get a goal in the first 20. Fortunately Covic was on song and the defenders had done just enough to scramble the ball out of danger.

Hersi looked off pace, but he had had time off and getting into the swing of things. But in saying that, Newcastle did well to contain the pace of him and Appiah.

Congratulations to Sotirio for making his debut. Had some possessions but looked absolutely gassed after 10mins! Of course that comes down to the differences in pace between NYL and HAL I suppose.

Hersi and Ono didn't play well, Ono was off position and his passing game.. Hersi was dangerous attacking his flank but couldn't finish.

    In the 2nd half,

Did anyone notice Haliti tell off Hersi when Hersi didn't pass the ball to him? Then Hersi argued back lol!

Out of Battery on your Phablet? is this even possible?

If I hadn't had to GPS navigate the train guys to the pub from Broadmeadow (and back on the return leg) I would have made it.

I think people are being a little negative on this game. Apart from the first 15 mins I thought we generally controlled the game pretty well and didn't give Newcastle much chance to get back into it. It was the first time I have seen us pass the ball around well and really control things. Shinji and Hersi didn't have the best game, but I thought they were marked extremely tightly. This allowed players like Haliti, Bridge, Poljak and Mooy more space and all of them played well in general. I thought Appiah looked ok, but still needs to be smarter about the choices he makes. A good defender will read him easily. Thought it was a good win in general. Newcastle is a vert tough away trip. As I said previously, once we start getting all our players back and playing regularly we are a much different team. We will be better for this run and good to see popa keeping a similar team to last week.

We're on track. Newcastle showed glimpses of why they beat Roar and Victory recently but missed Burns in my opinion who could have caused us much more trouble than their front line last night. Polenz was best for me and on many occasions I have to question the 3-2-1 from Fox. Hersi still looks short of match fitness so hopefully he is firing on all cylinders for the next 2 big games. From TV the pitch didn't look the best for me either so even more credit for a very cohesive dislay after waethering that early period.

we played well, not amazing but we never let newcastle get into their stride and scored the goal

That's what good teams do. Also good to see that when Shinji and Hersi aren't firing, that players like Haliti and Bridge step up. We need contributions from everyone. But the best thing to come out of this game was the way the passes started connecting a bit more. When our passes hit the mark we are extremely dangerous on the counter. I thought Bridge could have scored one or two more goals. We definitely looked more like the team of last season. Even D'Apuzzo had a decent game for mine.

agreed, a few players had some good performances yesterday, and it was nice to see Sotirio get some time too, if Ono and Hersi are not firing then someone else will step up

We created chances and defended well, can't ask for much more from an away game. Juric would have finished off those chances.

I kinda feel for D'Apuzzo now, every team we play now are trying to exploit him. I really hope he comes good. He plays his heart out for the club.
