  • Wanderers Win Tight ACL Contest

    mack

A solitary and early goal to Labinot Haliti was the difference in an absorbing AFC Champions League clash in Parramatta tonight.

Haliti opened the scoring in only the 3rd minute, and despite chances to both sides, the 1-0 scoreline held until the final whistle after 2 minutes of stoppage time.

Kwabena Appiah spun around his marker, before sliding a ball into the box that Tomi Juric latched onto. The young striker connected with the ball while falling, sliding it across the 6 yard box and past the stranded Kawasaki keeper. Haliti reacted quickly while the opposition fullback tasked with marking him was caught ball watching, Haliti couldn't miss from 2 yards out in front of the RBB.

The Wanderers clean sheet was no fluke, as they played very tight in the center of the pitch, leaving Kawasaki fumbling around the edges of the field with little result. Their best chance of the night came in the second half after working in tight spaces on the left of the penalty box, but they couldn't squeeze the ball past Covic at his near post.

Kawasaki never hit the heights expected of a top tier J-League side, while the Wanderers continued a pattern of lost possession and lack of shooting, the early goal and solid defence was enough to score a valuable three points.

The three points see Western Sydney climb to second place in Group H after 3 games. Ulsan Hyundai are in 1st with 7 points, the Wanderers in 2nd on 6 points, Kawasaki on 3 and Guizhou Renhe on 1. The next ACL match for the Wanderers is the away match against Kawasaki on the 1st of April.

The Wanderers next match is against Perth Glory on Sunday the 23rd of March at Parramatta Stadium kick-off 5pm.

If we do qualify for the next phase the only negative side is that we lose Ono, as his new contract would begin with his Jap club i believe.

I think Ono would still be around for the first knock out round played in May if we manged to qualify.

Beat Kawasaki away and then all we need to qualify is a draw from the remaining 2 games

If Guizhou fail to beat Ulsan and we beat Kawasaki away, then we've qualified. We'll have 9 point with 2 games remaining and Kawasaki will have 3 (but we beat them head to head) and Guizhou will have 2 maximum (if they draw with Ulsan again).

Means Popa can focus on the HAL.

2nd Round is immediately after the Group Stage. Its a few days after the HAL Grand Final. And Ono is contracted for that too.

Quarter Finals are later in the year, August/September-ish

lol @ some random Kawasaki fan coming up to me and giving me his scarf after the match outside the ground... the 3-4 minute convo that followed was off the charts, I didnt know what he was on about and he sure as heck had no idea what I was telling him... Part of which was "melb is a **** hole, dont waste your time going there buddy". Bloody good ppl those Japs!

I was behind you when this was happening and I was trying to work out wtf he was saying. When you asked "what happened to your boys out there?" and he just nodded in agreement haha He was a champion! Saw him later on taking photo's of Parra. BRING ON THIS JAPAN TRIP!!!!

Great result and i thought, given the team we put out, it was a good display. Some what similar to last year

    Gotta mention this

In the second half we had 3 (i think ) corners in a row and thought to my self we must be over the 200 mark now without scoring!.

Teams must reckon a corner for us is better than a throw in for us!.

I gotta moan again about the $10 for a program when they are freebies for a league games

If we cant score from a corner against the smallest team we have played in all our time then what chance do we have against bigger sides.

Last night saw us have corners against midgets and we did not ever look like getting on the end of a cross.

Popa's subs were interesting for me. Ono was gone after 65-70 mins, Juric not long after was also gone but decided to keep them on. Did Mullen get injured? The Cole sub at RB was odd IMO unless its was an injury.

I think this was an injury. Santa was waiting on the sideline for ages (for the ball to go dead so they could complete the substitution) and the light up sign flashed a couple of times and was red 9 green 11. Then when the sub was finally made, 33 came up in red.

I think Popa just took the opportunity to have three strikers out there considering Cole could jump back into RB. Also could be due to Mullen's limited game time recently which means he tires easier.

Popa said after the game that Juric wasn't meant to last the full 90, but Mullen couldn't run any longer.

    What's it of tranquilo?

ah can't link or don't know how to a facebook video here. Its 2 of our fans who went next to or inside their away bay and were chanting RBB ole ole while they were chanting their songs. And the guy on the front of this article, the old kawasaki fan was closing his eyes and rubbing his play unicorn like he was placing some kind of curse or voodoo on them and our team!

When Adelaide did well in Champs league it was because they were able to keep their shape and be near impossible to break down. We rode our luck last night but I tell you Adelaide did the same.

The result last night came it a key time where if we lost the getting out of the group could be as near as gone as our next 2 games are the toughest.

I'm tipping we spank Perth this weekend and hopefully last night sets up a nice run to the finals and to the knockout stage in Asia.

They get too fast and everyone burns out, some need to be slowed down hard.

But like I said, it's always faster in the terrace.

As Nick said, you'd wanna have the tempo of our chants are a steady pace because as soon as we start pumping them fast then the people singing and jumping will get burnt out too quickly, which then means the chant's intensity won't last as long. Also means us drummers won't die out there whenever chants are played faster.

Lol I wanna see it now. They were a funny bunch even had a couple of white guys chanting in jerseys with them but the Yoshi goal counter banner on the fence with double digits 00 made me lol what were they thinking Yoshi was going to score more than 9 goals. I doubt the Yoshi counter will be back for our away game.
