  • Wanderers Winless Streak Extends To Six

    mack

Another dominating performance by the Wanderers failed to produce a first win at the Sydney Olympic Showground with a 1-1 draw against Brisbane Roar.

As is the penchant for the Wanderers this season, they began the game strongly but were let down by their defence. Jamie Maclaren, a potential transfer target for the home side for next season, slowly drifted to the byline, and was met by a diving Jerrad Tyson. The collision was hardly at full speed, Maclaren collapsed in a heap and was rewarded with a penalty. Having won the penalty he stepped up to take it, and blasted it straight down the middle to open the scoring.

The second half saw a red & black tide threaten to swamp the Roar, as the visitors fell back time & time again. With the attack crying out for a killer final ball to pierce the Roar defence, it came 10 minutes after the break. Nico Martinez poked the ball behind the Roar defence for Jack Clisby who hit a first time cross into the middle that give Jumpei Kusukami a simple tap-in.

The goalkeepers took the spotlight with a string of saves. Michael Theo made a spectacular one handed stop from a shot by Martinez that looked destined to curl into the far corner. Not to be outdone by his opposite number, Tyson came up with a two handed diving save at full horizontal stretch when a Roar free kick was hammered into the wall and deflected off the back of Mitch Nichols.

Tommy Oar had a chance in the 91st minute to steal 3 points, a cutback found the flying winger and his sidefoot first time strike failed to trouble Tyson. A last minute set piece for the Wanderers came away with nothing and consigned the Wanderers to a 6th game in a row without a win.

Western Sydney travel to Gosford next week to face the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday December 3rd.

Probably our best showing of the season but still not enough cutting edge to break the stingiest of defences. Nico could end up being our version of Carrusca and once those combinations work we are a match for anyone in this league. However, even with improvement I can't see this years squad being as good as last year's (although it could be a different situation if we bag Keane). A few other thoughts:

Nichols and Dimas well down on last season's form

Should Dimas be captain? (I guess there's few other choices)

Pinatares is giving us nothing in attack (team lifted a notch when Baccus replaced him)

Bulut needs to score soon or his season might be over

Tyson is only a marginally better keeper that Redmayne but I do like his assertiveness.

I wish Borda would stay on his feet and keep the air swings to a minumum

Aspro is growing game by game

    Clisby's a beast !!

Who decided to turn the sprinklers on at half time? Our defence has enough issues without a soggy pitch

Off the field I accepted that Spotless would always be the 'least worst' option but we're really losing that advantage that Pirtek gave us. Olympic Park is the pits but at least there are a couple of decent pre-game options in Lidcombe. However the RBB is was loud (although do they sound louder amongst smaller crowds like with the Cove at Allianz) and last night more of the rest of the stadium were getting into it. The WST also adding an extra dimension.

    How Epic was the Dale?...

Im curious. Riva - did you like the Dale? Did you get in amongst it?

Why sing, when you can complain?

Man I get amongst everything .........except people singing about themselves and not the team.

Valter , now I know that name and seen quite a few whinings from you if I'm not mistaken. Pot calling the kettle..........

My posts deal in facts but when it offends some precious they call it a complaint.

So Dale would be ok then given that its not about anyone?..

For what its worth, it made my kid's night. He doesnt give a **** about the scoreline. For that, im appreciative... coz at least one person in the family went home satisfied.

Oh and take the RBB out of that stadium and we would have a bunch of unsatisfied ****s everywhere. I love that as a fan base we can continue to enjoy ourselves and support the team even when **** isnt going great on the field.

Interesting that the pitchforks aren't out for Tyson after his unecessary challenge that ended up with the penalty.

but he's nice on social media

yeah its a fair point. i love tyson and enjoy chanting for him but if that was redders coming out and going to ground like that he would be getting torn to pieces both here and elsewhere. there was no need for it - defender was forcing him away from goal anyway. he just needed to get across and protect his near post. but its the a-league so all keepers have significant flaws* or they wouldn't be here

    * except when they play us.

Last night traveling to the ground was horrid and playing at soulless stadium while there is a concert and also v8 racing car road changes should not happen, next year they need to schedule games not on Fridays or when other events are on as it was ridiculous the last two weeks and cannot blame people for not showing up or turning around going home from frustrating traffic chaos on Fridays. Feel as though this ground is cursed and it's a good thing no acl games there.

We played well just lacking final product and butters is a bit lost while Nico pulls the strings, this and wing play needs to be sorted out as not much service into the box and corners/free kick crosses not working well enough for a result with the amount of dominance. Again an error has cost us despite how soft the pen was but I feel a win will get us on a roll and we're not far off from becoming a major threat which should carry over into acl just need transfer window quality now. Rbb was brilliant just hope ffa see the tifo message and wake up to themselves as without rbb this stadium would be as cold as a giants match.

Start off with the positive - overall, we're improving, I can see that....The RBB sound absolutely fantastic, and last night the crowd really got involved with some chants. Its was a nice spontaneous moment. The ole ole ole jerrad Tyson chant was great.

Down to 11,000 last night but i think the atmosphere inside is starting to pick up as the stands are now finding a voice there. All this despite the rubbish location and distance from the actual pitch. I cant see the crowd dropping much below that number as those of us left have now put up with the poor transport options for a few weeks.

Off the field I accepted that Spotless would always be the 'least worst' option but we're really losing that advantage that Pirtek gave us. I agree with these three positive posts. The atmosphere was interesting last night...and I'm not sure that it was only about the goal.

Maybe it was, for me, in  that, for the first time this season, we have seats that I'm happy with - even tho I don't mind our seats at ANZ....and so I started the game in a positive mindset.

I've been disoriented and dejected and didn't think Soulless could ever work.

But to me, in that second half, there was more than a hint of optimism, relief and excitement that we were seeing something of what we are used to at Parra. Both from the team and from ourselves.

The team was playing with more fluidity - still lots of mistakes, but better!!!

Tyson is more commanding in the box than Redders....so you sense more confidence in the team and in the stands. There was lots of frustration from near misses... but at least there were chances occurring!

The RBB was awesome as always, the team played with determination and heart.... the crowd definitely lifted, and there was the sense of real possibility that the next three years might not be the disaster that it had felt up to that point (well from my point of view).

PS I was delighted to read  that Manfred has returned to the fray. All round I feel optimistic atm. And a trip up to Gosford should unite us all a bit further!

I watched the replay today. Tyson does some important talking off the ball. I saw various times calling out to Aspro and Borda to mark their man which makes a world of difference. Aspro and Borda responded accordingly. It is why Brisbane rarely broke our defensive line.

He also saved a free kick which was well taken (not sure how Redmayne would have went) as he had his goal covered, and was surprisingly very good at taking high crosses in the air. He is also a very good sweeper, but also knows when to stay on his line. Yeah he did stuff that one up, but he will learn from it. He is competent in other areas. He also doesn't put doubt in everyone's minds, (including his own supporters and defenders).

I don't care what he does on social media. That has never concerned me. But from what I can tell so far he has good goal keeping attributes. Of course we will need to see more. But Redmayne..come on. He barely knew where his own goal was.

Nico is far from the best player in the league.

Anyone who thinks he's even close to the top 5 in the league has Red & Black tinted glasses on.

For starters to be one of the best players in the league you need to actually do something with the ball.

Nico has 1 goal. Fornaoli has 6. Ninkovic has 4. Rojas has 4.

Nico has 2 assists. Fornaroli has 0. Ninkovic has 3. Rojas has 4.

I'd rate in no particular order, Keogh, Fornaroli, Brosque, Rojas, Ninkovic, all clearly and obviously ahead of him and that isn't including any defenders or keepers. Even Andrew Nabbout has more combined Assists + Goals than Nico has.

Take your point but judge him at end of season. I doubt he will be the best player (Fornaroli is by a mile) but I honk he will be up there.

He is only just reaching full fitness, he dominated the second half last night. He's Clearly class and getting better each game.

I haven't seen brosque dominate a game like that for a long time. Ninkovic is playing really well (he's in his second season).

Unfortunatly this will probably be another case of us getting a player back to fitness and form just in time for him to move on. I'm planning on enjoying it while it lasts

Any time we get on the wing we take a touch too much instead of crossing, then another touch, and a third touch, and maybe if we're lucky the fourth touch is a cross that hits the defender who has now closed down the cross.

This is from Mack from the game day thread but I think it's particularly relevant.

I was going to say the same thing word for word after last week's game. It frustrates the hell out of me. Last night was even worse than last week, because we created so much space for both Neville and Clisby on so many occasions, yet the movement and space created breaks down because of very slow decision making or poor touches.

I get cranky at juniors taking too many touches and eventually putting themselves under pressure. I would have thought that seasoned professionals would understand this but apparently not. Neville in particular is quite poor at this. Clisby is a bit better. Maybe it's Neville's lack of pace, or maybe just a lack of pace between the ears. I'm not sure.

As for other things, it was very frustrating to have dominated to the degree we did (stats were overwhelmingly in our favour) yet not to come away with a win. Again!!!

    Nico is beautiful to watch.

Nicholls seems a bit tactically weary and slightly off his game. Geez he works hard though.

Tyson gives me much more confidence at the back then I've ever felt with Redmayne.

I wish the refs would give more protection to Jumpei and Nico. Every team seems to try and hack these two out of the game, with little penalty.

Bulut just seems lost. I think his time is coming and he might end up getting the "treatment". His positional awareness isn't that great IMO.

The jury is still out on Pinatares and Borda. We certainly looked better when Baccus came on.

On any other night, Santa slots the Nico cross in with ease and we win. It just wasn't our night.

As for OP...........I drive and park there. I get a kebab at a place where the restaurants are under the Commonwealth Bank building opposite the station. I go to the game and then get the hell out of there. As soulless as Olympic Park is, it probably is the only option for us for the next 3 seasons. It's no Parramatta/Eat Street/March etc...... but it's going to have to do.

Spotless -  I'm one of the lucky ones I suppose. Sitting up above the RBB, the noise is incredible rebounding off the roof. I love it. I love it even more because I'm back row and can stand up to watch the match (I must be near K Gee), which I prefer to do. It's not perfect, but where else do we go?

As for the facilities, the food and bar options are brilliant to say the least (except for the shitty mid-strength urine). I like the fact that the whole ground is open for its full circumference to walk around. I went for a walk last night before the game right around the ground to check out the facilities. Plenty of bars (and nice ones at that - one even had lounges and bean bags and was a public accessible bar), an enormous array of really decent food options including kebabs and Camel Burgers {sorry Wendy}, seafood, salads (happy now Wendy? :meep: ), a myriad of hot dog types, Asian stir fry's etc., plenty of coffee outlets, great access and plenty of space on walkways, clean toilets, and fairly decent roof coverage. All the things we want in a modern stadium.

Add 6-10 000 capacity, make it rectangular, and plonk it in Parramatta, and I'd be a happy camper and the crowds will flock back.

Finally, the RBB were brilliant last night. The stadium wide Dale was the highlight, after doing the 3 sectional Dale.

It showed the RBB that the non-actives are really keen to get active. We sometimes just need a bit of encouragement.

Bulut is following instructions. Both he & Santalab constantly go wide down the channel looking for long balls from our defenders. They then get caught on the wing when the play leaving no-one in the middle.

Yes indeed, although Santa has a far better ability to eventually get himself into a scoring position. Bulut has none.

Honestly what are our other options? Would people rather we go to Penrith full time or C'Town? Even Belmore?

SOP isn't as great as Parra, we know. It's what we have though for the next few years, we are better off working to turn it into a fortress than staying home

Whenever you are losing you always need to vent your frustrations on something. For a lot of people it is the ground we are playing at. But remember in our third season not many people were turning up at Pirtek towards the end. SOP actually isn't that bad a place, but more for recreational stuff rather than weekly club football. Still if we were winning we would have got 15k last night.

Surely you must be trolling, right?

How is the Dale singing about the RBB? The boys on the field feed off the energy the RBB & stands put in. At first I just thought you were a miserable sod, this is just next level. Incredible :nono:

I assume you are one of the guys that are in the middle of the RBB at home or away trips, not chanting, arms folded & getting cranky at people getting in your way?

Why such the drama queen response? The greatest thing about being a wanderers support is the great relationship the stands have with the active support. Some of my greatest moments have been when we have all being in unison as one to back our team.

It is one of the greatest things about football, the atmosphere we create & the way we show our passion for our team. It appears it means absolutely nothing to you.

Were in trouble we are running out of games before the ACL starts. Nicols looks like he is out confidence.

The penalty hmmm i think the ref was already giving it because of aspro in the back of mclaren and tyson just gave him enough reason. But we should not have been in that position 2 mins earlier we were comfortably in their half and a back pass sets them.on their way too many mistakes in the team.

Positives Tyson saves were good I have to say and he did command in the 18 yard box. Clisby was my man of the match and serious positive light next to martinez who was a machine.

Do we need Robbie Keane I think so. The forward line is just not firing atm but again happy with Jumpei with his goal but we need to strengthen that front line

Tyson seemed over enthused after a great save forced by a bad Dimas pass. Tyson said post match once he dived and realized he wasn't getting to the ball he pulled out got clipped and a soft penalty for a covered nowhere ball going out. He said he needed to learn from that and sober enough to know he will. Unfortunate but always looked like at least forcing the draw. No pitchforks for Tyson and still all quiet on the western front for Nichols and awol form.
