  • Wasteful Wanderers in Debut Draw with Mariners

The Western Sydney Wanderers spurned a number of chances to put Central Coast to the sword, the Wanderers debut ending in a nil-all draw in front of over 10,000 spectators.

A fireworks display and a presentation from Ian "Dicko" Dickson that involved Wanderers Chief Executive Lyall Gorman and FFA Chairman Frank Lowy was a fitting prelude to the match itself.

In teeming rain and gusting winds, the Wanderers controlled the majority of attacking possession and the biggest chances of the game but couldn't convert one to take the victory. The closest the Wanderers came in the first half was a Labinot Haliti break after touches by Kresinger and Polenz lead to Haliti being one on one with Mariners keeper Ryan in front of the RBB. He took one touch too many, the ball skipped away and so did the chance. Aaron Mooy and Mark Bridge tested Ryan also, but their shots lacked either direction or strength and none seriously challenged the young keeper.

When the game resumed after half-time the Mariners finally made some inroads into the match but stoic Wanderers defense held them at bay. Nerves frayed at the end of the match with several Mariners corners being given, but again the Wanderers held firm. Kresinger had a final chance to take all three points but was unable to put his shot on target and the match ended in a not undeserved 0-0 draw. Shinji Ono was a late substitute and came on to rapturous applause across the ground and early indications are that has all the quality his nickname of 'genius' implies.

The Mariners would not be happy with their performance. The Wanderers will have turned heads with their defence and midfield work, but will need to improve their shooting if they are going to seriously trouble the teams expected to place in the top 4. The performance of the Wanderers bodes well for the upcoming match against Adelaide as well as for the Round 3 Sydney Derby.

The Wanderers next match is the Round 2 encounter against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide. Friday the 12th of October. 7pm Adelaide Time, 7:30pm Sydney Time.

Sang my frikkin head off up the back of bay 56. Great job RBB. Love the ONO song but "We are the terrace" and "Tetris" song are the most fun. Can't wait for derby day.

Also hosted radio show this morning, very scratchy.

The voice was the audio equivalent of shitting thru a cheese grater.

Disappointing that I had anything left in the tank, sing harder next time.

Great job to the boys at the Woolpack before the game. Made those of us popping our RBB cherry part of the family instantly and your hard work and passion is a great standard set early.

Watched the game this morning on IQ. the chants coming thru loud and clear, marinators looked like statues for 90% of the game.

    RBB RBB RBB RBB RBB!!!!!!

i am also concerned where the goals are going to come from, i have not seen enough of some of the players to see if they are good goal scorers or not and i know Ono can score but hopefully we can score a few goals

Boys does the woolpac cater for kids like a garden area whilst the big boys are inside singing?

    Unfortunely not

What do you mean? I brought in my sister who's underage and no one asked questions. I figured since it was a beer garden, minors can be there with adult supervision.

As in the Pub doesn't have a designated childrens area like some larger ones do. Minors can be there with adult supervision but no drinking or pokie-ing..thats what I got done for :P

Enjoyable game despite the weather. The atmosphere from the crowd was great. When the RBB started "Ole ole ole" the people in the stands clapped along. Finally made it down to join my two female friends in GA after they opened the gates from the Red section. Found them parked next to the RBB. They were drawn to the RBB singing and dancing and were joining in despite not knowing any of the the words. As two non-traditional females attending the match they told me they had a great time (except for calling the Ref a wanker - thou I pointed out he deserved it) they said they would come back :meep:

Looking forward to the next home match. Keep up the good work fellas :clapping:

Fair play to you lot. I watched most of the game and I could hear some of your songs. It will only get better, and keep up that positive vibe within the group. Thats where things can go downhill.

On the field; Ono seems like he will boss your midfield meaning that mooy will have more freedom. This can only be a good thing.

Bridge is a waste of space, he was at the jets, he was for us (despite his heroics against the tards) and he willl be for you. popa will need to think about what he does.

Once again, well done on your first outing on and off the field, but I hope we belt you in round 3!

Bro, the "Ono" chant was awesome. I know it was your idea, but it was sung for the first time at the airport on Monday morning. LOL that chant made Shinji smile :)

We're getting quite a bit of love from Japan directed our way too. These guys idolise Shinji and are very, very grateful to the Wanderers Family for taking him to our hearts. One of my Japanese mates admitted to bursting into tears when he heard the reception we gave Shinji last night.

I had a bit of a busy day today, so I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching the game off the IQ hopefully tomorrow.

Hi guys, don't know if this is against the rules but if you want a copy of the historic night, found this: http://www.matchhigh...=DL201210069462

Thanks for the link. I thought it was great how they opened up with the RBB. That shot of Ono and Zwaanswijk in the tunnel. The look on Patrick's face haha, it's awesome how they both once played against each other in the Eredivisie and then find themselves years later facing off again in the A-League.

I wonder how many Japanese supporters would turn up to games just to see him.

I saw a few people both at the squad launch on Thursday and again at the ground on Saturday wearing cheap white t shirts that they'd written on with permanent marker. Had all sorts of Japanese writing and 'Shinji 21' all of them. Also saw a few banners written in Japanese.

I know them, one of them is not really football fan. They are just Japanese, to checking out a Japanese player.

I don't mind. That's how non-football fans become football fans.

i was up in the western stand, during the 1 hour before the game they were playing loud crap music, that adds absolutely nothing to the atmosphere, meaning that we couldn't hear the RBB during that time until they stopped the music just before kick off. the loud music was even more annoying than the kid in front of me blowing a small vuvuzela. due to the amount of ambient noise, people talking etc, in the stands the chants don't come through as loud as the trial game against parramatta fc for instance. nothing can be done about it. it's still loud enough tho. at some times during the game when the ambient noise is a bit quieter the RBB comes across louder then. some in the stands were getting into the (generic!) ole chant, so there is some potential to get the whole stadium singing eventually. the amount of adults and kids wearing wanderers gear and jerseys is fantastic, there is so much red & black everywhere! even though there may not be as many members and supporters as hoped for so far, everyone who is seems totally into it.

anyway the RBB was fantastic, loud and entertaining, you guys are doing an amazing job!

regarding the game, jeez we should have won by a couple at least, the amount of chances we had, but a great first up effort by the boys, Popa has us playing a solid structure and style of play already which is pretty amazing considering he's only had a couple of months of training and a few practise games.

anyway here are many pics of the RBB and the game from before, during, and after the game at http://photobucket.com/AL2013Round01WSWvCCM and who was that guy in orange??

The RBB came through on the TV loud and clear - the commentators were very positive about the support and made a big thing of the Poznan.

i got a confession lol, i was unable to attend the wanderers game as I already had plans from 6 months ago to attend bathurst, unfortunately i was naive enough to think i could see the top 10 shooutout then make it back to parra just in time for kick off, got home at 930 :(

had the game recorded on fox and i gotta say, the RBB sounded fantastic through my tv (havent got surround sound), you guys kept going & going the whole game even through the rain, a monumental effort for the RBB :)

atmosphere looked great & that was a crowd of 10k, seriously cannot wait till the 20th when we play the smurfs in a sellout crowd. Wanderers looked good on sat night but finishing let us down, we shoulda won that game but to hold the Minor Prems to a draw is a great start IMO,

    bring on Adelaide!!!!

thank you for the positive comments, the match between our 2 teams should be interesting, RBB vs the cove, wanderers vs fc on current form i cant see sydney fc troubling us but we will see

Watched this on IQ the next day and the RBB sounded huge - booming if you will. Looked packed as well and the tifo was great. Saw plenty of familiar faces on the tele (as well as some who I'm pretty sure I knew but they were covered up haha). The commentators were loving it. My mum was loving it. My picture from the telegraph with shinji is sitting proudly on her fridge. Redhead - you might have a new friend mate.

awesome work dudes, see you at the derby

PS Apologies to george10 for the impromptu chanting (by myself) outside the kirribilli club after a fair amount of beers.

Ah you're the Kirribilli guy that tweeted me!, I checked my phone so much during the match. Just watched the replay, I have only ever knew what Taurus looks like so that's who I saw. When I join you guys in the RBB I need to learn the chants :P

I was at the game, had great seats behind Mariners bench. Heckled them all game. Hilarious. But putting this out there, I don't think Bridge is good enough for the league, let alone our team. I'd rather see Mooy and Ono behind Gibbs and Dino. Haliti is brilliant and should have stayed on the park.

I've watched Bridge from his Newcastle and FC days and I've never seen anything from him that would make me pick him over others. He's lazy and passes too often when I's rather see a striker be greedy and shoot to keep defenders guessing. Gibbs with his goalscoring instinct and Dino with his immense work rate would suffice. Not sure what popa is thinking with Bridge. They played together at FC so maybe popa sees something I do not. Bridge is also on alot of promotional stuff for the club so he must be considered a big part of the starting 11.

Also, kudos to Mitchell Duke for the Mariners. He was great, without scoring, and will be a good buy. A Western Sydney boy and maybe one we missed out on.

In terms of the play D'Appuzo was being far too exposed on the left hand side. popa needs to get in his ear because all of Central Coast's attack was coming from the right hand side. Bridge and Haliti are defintely a weakness we have in terms of not being able to score. Saying that both contributed nicely to the lead up play and creating chances, so perhaps we might be being a bit harsh on them. Would like to see Ono come in for one of them, and maybe even Minniecon who could prove to be a goal scorer.

Was pleasantly surprised by Hersi, Pollinger and Poljak. All three can play. Especially Poljak who to me will become just as valuable as Mooy. Mooy played well. apart from ocassionally being too selfish and losing the ball. Rogic burnt him a few times.

Well done to the RBB. You were loud, well organised and kept going all game. Even my mate commented on how you kept going all game. Black and red looks brilliant (much better than a gay looking light blue :bad: ).

    • It rained a bit... ...and that's about it.
    • Whilst Milanovic has had some ugly patches, that kids is a footballer. Priestman, Sapsford, Badolato and Simmons will all get there. And dont forget how good tate was in long stretches before his ACL injury. Our current crop of kids is obliterating the NPL, they will come good. And guys like Hendrix could be a base for a long term stable squad. Also getting rid of Antonsson and getting Borello back to being a lone striker like last season will be a huge step forward. I strongly believe our issue right now is our ownership. Lederer has basically gotten every decision wrong since taking over club (someone for the love of god prove me wrong because I can't think of one). I dont think the answer is burning half the squad and starting again
