  • Western Sydney Dominate Derby But Draw

    mack

Western Sydney should have all three points but slack finishing saw them draw as Bernie Ibini equalised after Tomi Juric gave the Wanderers the lead.

After a quarter hour the Wanderers could have gone ahead if the A-League shared the goal line technology as seen in the Brazil World Cup. Romeo Castelen tore through the heart of the Sydney FC defence and fired a shot that deflected in towards goal, replays showing the ball almost surely was over the line but with no signal from the linesman the referee decided to play on.

On the half hour the Wanderers took a deserved lead. In tight quarters Castelen lobbed a pass to the chest of Juric, who flicked out a right boot to push the ball into the path of Mark Bridge. Unfortunately for Bridge the ball didn't sit up well enough to get a shot away, a block from Sydney FC defender Gersbach only found the feet of Juric who blasted home from 8 yards to open the scoring in the derby.

Nikita Rukavytsya came inches away from doubling the Wanderers advantage just moments after the first goal. Bridge played a delightful through ball for the flying winger and he toed the ball past keeper Janjetovic but could only watch as it arced in towards goal only to bounce off the woodwork.

A breathless 5 minutes was then punctuated by the equaliser. The Wanderers wasted a set piece opportunity with a woeful short corner, Sydney FC managed to clear to Bernie Ibini who ran half the pitch, getting around Adeleke and Hamill before launching a tracer bullet of a shot that was past Covic before he could get a hand up.

Seconds before the half-time break Bridge should have restored the Wanderers lead. Iacopo La Rocca put Bridge clean through one one one with Janjetovic but his first touch took him slightly away from goal and the shot was aimed straight at the keeper.

Shane Smeltz had Sydney FC's best chance in the second half, a header back across goal from a corner was met with a turning volley by the New Zealand international but Covic rose sharply to tip the ball over the bar.

Rukavytsya had his own chances to win the game for his new club and score his first goal for the Wanderers in the process, his blinding pace saw him get in on goal twice, the first a long range effort he could only aim at Janjetovic, the second saw him burst clear of Seb Ryall but his touch let Janjetovic get a sniff of the ball, smothering any chance of a goal.

The Wanderers dominated the match as Sydney FC seemed content to hold on for a point. Western Sydey shaded possession 53% to 47%, with more passes, a better passing accuracy as well as having more shots, crosses and corners in comparison to their opponents in blue. Alas the key stat, goals scored, favoured neither side but the performance was a marked improvement in comparison to the first handful of rounds and if performances like that keep coming then so will wins.

The Wanderers next match is against the Brisbane Roar, on Wednesday the 3rd of December at Parramatta Stadium, kick-off at 7:30pm.

Since we have been chasing the game, its time for popa to bite the bullet, take either la rocca/poljak off and add another striker upfront with juric

Adeleke's one-on-one tackling ability is out of this world.

massive credit to popa and the club's scouts for seeing that in him, He's quickly becoming my favourite player

Our strongest lineup is up there amongst best in league. Victory probably strongest, Adelaide strong, east Sydney sttongish but struggling with injuries. As ours starts to click I see us way better than any of the other sides... Especially Perth Wtf.

The challenge will be how a heavy schedule lands...

I thought that the heavy schedule was already here lol

I dont know if its just me or Adeleke looks uncomfortable in one on one situations and has got himself in poor positions for the smurfs to allow themselves to break away which led to Ibini scoring that goal

Apart from the goal were he got beat,

There were a few good tackles where he just times the challenge so well and wins the ball

Haven't seen any replays but surely some WSW player was pushed in the box before SFC countered to ibini goal.

    Yep...that was my thoughts too.

It's as if some rich Al Hilal prick has lodged a few Saudi petrodollar bribes in the bank accounts of the likes of KGJ and Green to make sure some kind of warped cosmic karma is served up against us after out good fortune in the ACL.

And if I see another blonde haired toddler running the eastern sideline with a flag he got from Toy'sR'Us  I swear to ***** god I'm gonna find me a 7.62mm FN SLR and start going Lee Harvey Oswald on the dullard officials. Even a blind monkey with a gangrenous right leg and epoxy resin poured down his inner ears could judge offsides and throw ins better than that FFA employed part-time cabbage who was nearest to Bay 65.

lol I am thinking you and me are feeling about as **** miserable as each other right now.

That was a ***** ****** offside call, one of the worst I have seen for a while.

Before I come across as a bitter and twisted old bastard (which probably happened around my 3rd post in this forum anyway) I thought Bridge and Hamill were quality tonight, and Tomi and Ante were always of a standard we demand. It gave me shivers to see Hamill steamroll down his flank trying to turn defence into attack, like the old days when Jerome was in his prime

I'm not sure whether I was watching the same game as some on here but I agree with Popa who in his post game interview said that our first half performance was the best we have played in the history of the club other than our finishing.  Even Arnold agreed that we probably should have been 3 up at half time.  Thats only the third time that this squad has had a run together, give or take a player or two, since Popa returned to normal training after the ACL and the improvement since the Mariners game is astonishing.  We made the team with the best defensive record in the competition this season seem rank amateurs most of that half and forced Arnold to completely rejig his formation at half time.  The squad still isn't at the level of fitness of the last two seasons so again we couldn't run out the second half but Popa said he expects that we will be fully fit soon.

Good post, just frustration at the finishing side of things after the last 3 homes games I guess. SO SO SO many chances wasted over the last 3 games!

A positive to take away is that we looked really good going forward in the first half. Offered up a lot of direct attacking threat to the extent that i haven't seen in awhile from the club, although we really failed to take our chances. Ruka needs to spend an extra hour or two just putting them in the back of the net, he could have easily won us the game tonight.

Nonetheless, love Castellen as well brilliant player to watch and new favourite.

Incredible tifo, those involved can pat themselves on the back, top notch. And how good was the diss chant tonight?! loved it, shame that muppet Ibini had to ruin it the second time around but thus is the nature of football. Onwards from here.

What is this impatience with us waiting to get the team to gel together?

We are showing promising signs, we're just over a quarter of the season in and we're THREE points away from the top 6. What's the problem exactly?

    Link to comment

The premiers plate is gone, and we're 3 points behind City in 6th spot.
Get a win on Wednesday night, draw on Saturday in Adelaide, then head off to Morocco and play the biggest games in the history of the club.

We then have 3 games in 10 games then a months break for the Asian Cup.

Once the Asian Cup is done we come back refreshed and then we'll be able to come home and finish the A-League season strong, and then enjoy another

    campaign in Asia

We were the better team and should have won by a few goals. I also believe it was a foul that led to their goal. I think we have been very unlucky in the last 3 games and the refs have not done us any favours. It seemed like we used all our luck in the ACL and now we paying our dues, to be honest I still would not change winning the ACL over a few games in the A league

    Too many chances wasted

I'm putting a sneaky $10 on Ruka beating Usain bolt in a 100M run

Anyone else see one of the fifita bros (Andrew?) in RBB? He was full chanting and going off!

    Shoot *****!

Ruka is sometimes too fast for his own good

Told my mate, we will get nothin out of the ref

Knew straight away the SFC would stay back and play on counter

season 1. polenz is penalised for a ball to

    hand during the grandfinal.

season 2. franjic does the same thing and its waved away during the grandfinal.

both times and the same ref.... between him and KGJ we may as well have B1 and B2 out there.

Should have won but happy to be unbeaten at home in 12 games.

Romeo is an animal but can't shoot *****.

Popa has some balls debuting Ruccas in a derby game.

Cove fell asleep second half I think they got sick of repeating the same chants over and over, they are boring compared to our RBB.

    Great tifo.

    More inconsistent refereeing.

    Bring on Brisbane.

Popa's balls have been on the line plenty of times before.

Remember when he started a 16 year old Alessi in the home derby last season?

Has anyone noticed that the derbies at parra are typically low scoring games whilst at Allianz they're higher scoring?

    Parra, 6 goals

    1-0

    1-1

    Allianz 13 goals

    2-0

    2-0

    3-2

10 goals to 9 in our favour

1 win each and 2 draws at parra

2 wins each at the smurfdome

dead even contest really. should have belted them 4 or 5-1 today though.

Oh, they also have more coaches at derbies than we have (we can only cite Popa, but they've had three...well three and 0.05)

Some wise words from Flytox and I agree with West13's response to Manfred's rant. Had we put away 1-2 more would we be arguing about the performance? I don't think so! The only thing that is missing is the goals and I hope Popa works on shooting practice every bloody day this week in training  I think we are just all frustrated that we are playing some real decent stuff but it's just the small things that aren't working for us, shots not coming off, the final ball or pass is just not coming off and other slight adjustments that is the difference between scoring and not. I can see no way that we will be changing formation at all but maybe just personnel.

That first half we bossed and the second half despite Arnold tightening things up, still we found holes and looked dangerous in front of goal but you wonder how different the game would have been had they had Og, Dimatravic and Abbas on the field. As much as people are giving it to Abbas, you only have to see that falling akwardly can lead to injuries and this was just another case. Also off the corner, we were up 1-0, why didn't we have more cover at the back? Is it too much to ask to have 2 back and 1 holding the space? Instead we let Ibini have so much room, ahhhhh just don't get it!!

Will be interesting to see what Popa does on Wednesday night, does he play a rotated midweek squad and then a full strength side at Adelaide? Or does he wait till he sees how players pull up after tonight, play a strong team against roar and then play the rotated squad against Adelaide?

Problem is Pryd (he says putting on his Captain Obvious hat) is we didn't put away the chances. Time and time and time again our forward motion was stilted, confused or missed the ***** mark.

How long has it been since we throttled a team in any comp, A-League or ACL? I know we can't always win and we can't always win pretty. But FFS when you have players holding onto the ball for so long that the opposition can easily reset (as the smurfs did time and time again over the whole match), or not turning those few moments of quality into a shitestorm of goals, then pointing that out is not a rant...it's stating the bleeding obvious.

And just a reminder...how much match fitness or time together did the guys who were rounded up to play for us in season one had by their seventh round? Not much more if any, and I seem to recall by then we had 3 wins and 7 more points than our current squad has in the 2014/15 season.

    Not sure about the negativity,

Tifo was sensational, best I have ever seen.

We made them look stupid in the first half, even Arnie admitted it.

Rukavitsya - unbelievable, to think he can still improve is insane.

RBB drowned out the smurfs, fox went and moved a mic in front of them because they needed help.

Brisbane played ok but have had to travel so we have that over them.

We may drop to last if newcastle win tomorrow (I'm tipping them to).

Abbas - hahaha, we get Santa back after Xmas - he's a cripple for at least a year.

We are looking good, even the most kosher smurf or fan of other sides will admit we are not a wooden spoon team.
