  • Western Sydney Dominate Derby But Draw

    mack

Western Sydney should have all three points but slack finishing saw them draw as Bernie Ibini equalised after Tomi Juric gave the Wanderers the lead.

After a quarter hour the Wanderers could have gone ahead if the A-League shared the goal line technology as seen in the Brazil World Cup. Romeo Castelen tore through the heart of the Sydney FC defence and fired a shot that deflected in towards goal, replays showing the ball almost surely was over the line but with no signal from the linesman the referee decided to play on.

On the half hour the Wanderers took a deserved lead. In tight quarters Castelen lobbed a pass to the chest of Juric, who flicked out a right boot to push the ball into the path of Mark Bridge. Unfortunately for Bridge the ball didn't sit up well enough to get a shot away, a block from Sydney FC defender Gersbach only found the feet of Juric who blasted home from 8 yards to open the scoring in the derby.

Nikita Rukavytsya came inches away from doubling the Wanderers advantage just moments after the first goal. Bridge played a delightful through ball for the flying winger and he toed the ball past keeper Janjetovic but could only watch as it arced in towards goal only to bounce off the woodwork.

A breathless 5 minutes was then punctuated by the equaliser. The Wanderers wasted a set piece opportunity with a woeful short corner, Sydney FC managed to clear to Bernie Ibini who ran half the pitch, getting around Adeleke and Hamill before launching a tracer bullet of a shot that was past Covic before he could get a hand up.

Seconds before the half-time break Bridge should have restored the Wanderers lead. Iacopo La Rocca put Bridge clean through one one one with Janjetovic but his first touch took him slightly away from goal and the shot was aimed straight at the keeper.

Shane Smeltz had Sydney FC's best chance in the second half, a header back across goal from a corner was met with a turning volley by the New Zealand international but Covic rose sharply to tip the ball over the bar.

Rukavytsya had his own chances to win the game for his new club and score his first goal for the Wanderers in the process, his blinding pace saw him get in on goal twice, the first a long range effort he could only aim at Janjetovic, the second saw him burst clear of Seb Ryall but his touch let Janjetovic get a sniff of the ball, smothering any chance of a goal.

The Wanderers dominated the match as Sydney FC seemed content to hold on for a point. Western Sydey shaded possession 53% to 47%, with more passes, a better passing accuracy as well as having more shots, crosses and corners in comparison to their opponents in blue. Alas the key stat, goals scored, favoured neither side but the performance was a marked improvement in comparison to the first handful of rounds and if performances like that keep coming then so will wins.

The Wanderers next match is against the Brisbane Roar, on Wednesday the 3rd of December at Parramatta Stadium, kick-off at 7:30pm.

1st half excellent. Loads of chances. 2nd half we weren't good enough. 3 points from 7 games isn't good enough. Popas got to have some balls now and lay in to some of his players. Which I'm sure he will.

Apart from a couple of ridiculous forays where the ball was seemingly glued to a single player's feet, that was a quite a good performance. To match (better than match, to be honest) one of the pacesetters in the league, and show more than a semblance of team work after some truly terrible games, was a sight to behold in what had been a forgettable season till tonight.

My only gripe from tonight, and I can't believe that I am complaining about this, is the RBB... Of all the nights to have a flat performance, why tonight? Apart from the opening chant, I can't help but feel that the travelling members of the Cove had more energy on display in the stands.

    Karma for Ali.

Does this mean sydney have 2 acl's now? positives from the game were the tifo, our 50 million chances at goal, abbas stumbling off the pitch after diving around earlier on.... as for the cove they should have just sat inside parra pools which would have suited their swimming carnival type chants....the **** you westie scum was hilarious considering half the morons would have gotten on the train at strathfield....this game should have been wrapped up at halftime just like the first game.

The two of us said, when Cory did his ACL that we don't like seeing professional players have bad injuries.

    But **** abbass.

Legit couldn't care less for that ****.

    - Abass injured

    - Great atmosphere

    - ACL presented

Only thing missing was the win. Oh well!

So frustrating. But very positive signs!

Ibini had a thong thrown at him. Lol. Westies ;)

    Ali Abbas ACL.... Gone.

Is this confirmed? Wouldn't surprise me, I was at the door of the visitors dressing rooms when he came out on crutches with Terry McFlynn, with a huge brace around his knee just after halftime. One of the ESFC assistants came out and asked where he lived (didn't hear his answer haha) so clearly were taking him home or to the hospital. Looked pretty bad, an ESFC fan walked past and asked him how it was and his one reply was "Bad" with a shake of the head.

Very frustrating result, had about 3-4 chances that should've been put in the back of the net. Bridge isn't a number 10, felt he was quite ordinary tonight and should've buried his one-on-one, let alone absolutely screwing up the shot that fell to Juric for his goal. Saba didn't too good when he came on though, seems like he's always in 2 minds when racing forward on the ball with men making runs in front of him - never knows whether to go himself, or to pass it, and who to pass it to, etc. Not being too critical cause I know it'll take time for him to hit his straps, but expect much more from him when he comes off the bench, particularly considering I would've thought he'd be fired up after the last derby.

Thought we were brilliant in the first half and ran all over ESFC with their defensive, negative football. Clearly played for the draw from the outset. Game hit a lull in the second half and was pretty anti-climactic. Ibini took his goal very well but shouldn't have been given that much space and time.

Overall, yet again a frustrating result but not a bad performance. The win will come - bring on the Roar.

EDIT: yep, just watching the replay now and Tom Chadwick reports he did his ACL.

yeah mate im in bay 41 and its all families around there no one chants so all night i could hear the esfc fans. very disapointed that no one booed or gave the esfc players stick while they warmed up infront of our fans...a few day trippers on that side in the corner.

We should have closed out the game in the first half very similar to last week, then for whatever reason it's like we change structure and ease up for the second. Whatever we are doing in the second half of games is not working. We needed the three points more so than they did, why did we not keep at it. Also release the farkn ball from the middle when you look up first time. Ruka, juric making many runs but the feed is very poor as in too slow. Give it first glance when you look up and they are making their runs we had the pace on their backs to get in behind but the execution was lathargic at best from the middle

that goal was junk and no one even bothered to get a leg in before he took his shot....adeleke got shown up there can't understand why he showed him the goal instead of the sideline? we had enough chances to win 6-1 the ruka shot onto the post, the goal line clearance, bridge getting stopped by the keeper...ruka again... this was our best chance to beat these ****heads but we bombed out on it...they were missing some very good players in dimitrijevic, gamiero and abbas...i thought we once again looked on fire from the start and fizzled out by the end of it. This is surely now a problem as it has occurred in the pat 3 consecutive matches...i think we are trying to blast teams off the park from the start in the hope we hold a lead after slotting a few then defend it out. We are no good at chasing a result and play better from in front... we could have easily been on 9 points now if half those chances went in over the past 3 games.... as for castellen... youre skillful mate but farking taking a shot once youve created some space no point walking the ball to the net.

we need a mid to carry the ball forward and release when right...too many times tonight we over cooked passes or didnt release at the right moment....we seem to create chances though which is positive. I am sick of also seeing no shots from the edge of the area too... sometimes these shots can catch a deflection and go in. Castellen should shoot more as his runs are excellent...he finds space and has quick feet...should shoot. Week by week that front 3 are geling and it'll be a deadly trio thats for sure.

Agree, it was woeful defending, but Ibini did well to run with it and finish it off.

I'd agree with this also, love Castelen and what he offers to our side but he seems so reluctant to shoot for some unknown reason. Had plenty of chances to shoot from distance but never did, and thats been the case for a few games so far.

2154... Take a deep breath bro.

And watch Popa speak to Fox guys post game. I agree with it all.

yeah mate im relaxed ha ha just annoyed we havent banked 3 pointers after being so dominant during these matches. I mention the castellen thing because its frustrating to see a player with lots of skill beat players but fail to finish the brilliant work without a shot on goal. We're on the way up and you can see our starts are getting more impressive each week...if we slot half these chances in the opening stages we get up by 2 or 3 in each game. At the end of the day we just need to finish 5th or 6th and we are a way better side than the 4 above us.

AAAAAARGH so frustrating. How many chances do we need????!!!!! Ball just won't go in at the moment. Some great passages of play during the 1st half. The chances are there just no one wants to stick them in the back of the net.

La Rocca didn't even get a yellow for destroying Abbas' knee lol.

Taking off Castelen ruined us going forward. He was probably exhausted but Saba didn't do anything. Still waiting for him to spark.

Adeleke too laid back for my liking. Someone give him a wack over the head and tell him to get some urgency. I thought he was quick enough to get to that Ibini ball.

    Another 2 points dropped.

Also I've gotta be honest...thought the RBB was the quietest they've ever been at a derby. Despite what it sounds like on the coverage (watching the replay now) we were defs later in the stadium, but still pretty quiet...dunno what it was. The tifo was brilliant but think we let the boys down a bit in the stands tonight.

    • The Western Sydney Wanderers dropped out of the A-League Finals race after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Melbourne City tonight. The Wanderers were looking for revenge for their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Melbourne City earlier in the season with a spot in the top 6 all but assured for the winner. City came out on top with a first half brace followed by a stoic second half defensive play that the bright spark of Marcus Younis & Dylan Scicluna couldn't break down. Melbourne City backed up with the same squad from their record breaking 8-0 demolition of Perth Glory the week prior, while the Wanderers continued to miss Nicolas Milanovic & Lachlan Brook to international duty while also losing Brandon Borrello to injury in their 2-1 losing effort in the Sydney Derby. The Wanderers made a decent start, with Zac Sapsford setting up a free kick on the right wing from a cynical foul by Vicente Fernandez that saw him pick up an early yellow card. City managed to scramble away the resulting set piece opportunity. Melbourne City setup a good opportunity for Marin Jakolis, he chested down a lob into the box that he was onside, but he was put off by the cover defence just enough that he dragged his shot wide. City took the lead with an assist from Marcelo. Leo Natel isolated Aidan Simmons, beat him with a simple cut inside onto his right foot and smashed the ball toward goal, saw it take a flick off the Wanderers Captain and beat the dive of Thomas ar the far post. Sapsford could have pulled the Wanderers level shortly after, Pierias had made a number of attacking raids down the right flank and another one let him find Oscar Priestman who laid it off for Sapsford, his shot at the near post was saved well by Jamie Young. Jack Clisby was in the right place at the right time when Jamie Maclaren and Jakolis combined, the cross into the 6 yard box would have given Maclaren a golden chance if not for Clisby coming across as late cover to nod it away. Jakolis missed his earlier chance but he was given a saloon passage into the 18 yard box to score his 2nd goal of the season and City's 2nd of the game. Starting with non-existent pressure on Jamie Young, the Wanderers invisible midfield allowed their opponents to quickly pass it up field, then to let Jakolis run with the ball from 30 yards out. He strode into the box without challenge, Alex Bonetig ignored the golden rule of defending and ran away from the man with the ball for a phantom run to his left, leaving Jakolis to slowly shuffle inside the box, square up and shoot with Marcelo's attempted block not soon enough to stop it from hitting the side netting to make it 2-0 with 5 minutes left to play in the half, a score line which remained until the break. While it was not quite "season on the line" yet, there was an imperative to make a change and Marko Rudan hooked Marcus Antonsson and Bonetig with Younis and Nathan Barrie on in like for like positional substitutions. The changes did little to improve the situation, with Josh Brillante having a long range strike the crowd was momentarily excited for before Young swatted it away. City went to the bench before the hour mark, Leo Natel making away after his goal-scoring effort with Harry Politidis coming on. Dylan Scicluna came on for Simmons. Melbourne City paid the price for lazy wing defence as they allowed the two Red & Black substitutes to combine to draw a goal back. Scicluna was left in an acre of space on the sideline and he launched a curling cross to the back of the penalty area, Younis arrived on the edge of the 6 yard box, heading back and across the keeper, 2-1 to the Wanderers with 20 to play. Milos Ninkovic and Nathaniel Blair were the final substitutions for the Wanderers as Sapsford & Sonny Kittel left. Terry Antonis & Max Caputo entered for City as they took off Tolgay Arslan and Mathew Leckie to introduce fresh legs for the final 10 minutes. Younis and Ninkovic both had chances, Younis with two attempts after cutting back onto his right and striking hard & fast but not being able to beat Younis or curl it into the far side. Ninkovic was almost through on goal in the 86th minute, but just as he pulled the trigger he was closed down and had his shot blocked. City used their final window following the shot, the substitute Politidis coming off in a tactical switch with former Wanderer Alessandro Lopane after only a half-hour and Curtis Good on to shore up the defence. The Wanderers continued to push for a vital equaliser, they prodded and probed with Ninkovic, eventually a snapshot from Younis was created but his shot hit the bar in an agonising fashion for the home supporters with 6 minutes of stoppage time given by the fourth official. In the 95th minute City gave away a free kick not far out from their penalty area. With even Lawrence Thomas going up for the set piece Jack Clisby elected to shoot at goal but couldn't get it past the wall. After a series of crosses & rebounds it fell for Ninkovic but he turned out to be in an offside position and it was the final chance of the game. Melbourne City took the 3 points with their first half goals enough to get past a Wanderers team that lacked attacking inspiration until Younis & Scicluna arrived on the scene. Western Sydney left too big a hole to pull themselves out from, giving up their 6th place position, with reclamation of the last finals spot now requiring a win against Melbourne Victory in the final round and for Melbourne City to then lose or draw on Sunday. A loss or draw could see the team finish as low as 7th pending result for Brisbane & Adelaide. The Wanderers next match is their final game of the regular season, against Melbourne Victory in Melbourne with kick-off on Saturday the 27th with kick-off at 7:45pm. View full article
    • Classic WSW, show zero intensity until we're already multiple goals behind then fail to come back. The only thing missing was giving up a 3rd goal to City when Thomas went up for that late free kick.
