The Western Sydney Wanderers hosted Melbourne City in a Tuesday night fixture at the Western Sydney Stadium and was another dismal loss, a 2-0 result for City spearheaded by a brace for Jamie Maclaren.

There was some late drama with Florin Berenguer suffering an ankle injury and having to be replaced in the lineup by Naoki Tsubaki and their coach Patrick Kisnorbo suffering from illness and not being able to make his way to Parramatta.

After copping a first minute goal against Adelaide United the defence would have been looking to stay switched on from kick-off, but Keanu Baccus had other ideas. 5 minutes in with the ball deep in his own half his attempt at playing out from the back went wrong as he found a City player and it was instantly played in to Jamie Maclaren, the Wanderers nemesis fired across Daniel Margush and opened the scoring.

Somehow Nabbout didn't extend the lead in the 30th minute, he was released down the right wing and turned Mark Natta completely inside out before crashing his shot against the far post. Earlier in the game he also made a hash of a free header on the 6 yard box, and also had another chance that he put well wide.

The Wanderers were utterly dominated for a 10 minute period, they finally broke free in the 33rd, with Simon Cox finding James Troisi making a forward run, he cut back inside but his shot was disappointing and well off target. 5 minutes before half-time Keanu Baccus went into the referees notebook for diving to try and win a penalty against Curtis Good, and City went down the other end and Maclaren found enough space for a shot that went over the bar.

Baccus paid for his terrible display by being hooked at half-time for Jordan Mutch. James Troisi continued his horrible game by giving away a penalty in the 53rd minute. He lifted his hands while attempting to block a cross, and despite some dubious camera angles the VAR stepped, the referee called the penalty and Maclaren slotted it into the top of the goal. All complaints about VAR aside, it's been years since the new handball laws were introduced, professional football players have no-one to blame but themselves if they lift their hands in the air trying to block crosses.

Bruce Kamau and Bernie Ibini were introduced in the 65th minute in place of Troisi and Cox. After the subs the team finally sprang into a form of life, keeping possession for enough time to build pressure. Jordan Mutch shot a curling strike at goal that slid just past the top corner. The home side played out from the back and managed to win a corner, after playing through the high press, Ibini & Duke winning a corner. From a scramble the ball fell to Kamau at the back post and he was denied by a point-blank save that Tom Glover likely knew little about. 73rd minute Aquilina should have hit the target, Dorrans managed to chip the ball back across goal, it floated for Aquilina but the fullback couldn't keep his header down.

The fans had been calling for Robinson to switch the formation to a four at the back with a more traditional midfield, and he finally responded 10 minutes before full time. Ziggy Gordon and Duke were replaced by Kwame Yeboah and Nicolai Muller. City had the next chance however, another disgraceful defense from a corner by the Wanderers, letting Good get a free header on the 6 yard box and he should have scored.

Muller and Dorrans bombarded the City goal, Muller couldn't take advantage of Glover being out of his goal, Muller's shot was blocked by a defender and the rebound fell to Dorrans and he blasted a long range drive that also found the body of a City defender. Maclaren thought he'd secured all three points with a hat-trick in the final seconds, but he had strayed offside prior to receiving the pass. In the end it didn't really matter, as the visitor's closed out the game comfortably, taking all three points to move within striking distance of the top 6. For the Wanderers it was same old same old, not matching their opponents in the first half, going behind, and only raising the intensity when behind and after multiple subs had been made. Despite being in the top 4, the loss has setup the Wanderers for a potential drop outside the top 6 should results not go their way, and that happening will heap further pressure on Carl Robinson to make some changes to arrest the slide.

The Wanderers next game is against Western United on Sunday March 7, with kick-off in Ballarat at 6:10PM.

Exactly, I was at that derby as well.

There was another game against City at SOP on New Years Day when the stadium booed them off at half time and some fans got kicked out for voicing their opinion.

It's sad how many lows we have experienced, all the highs were so long ago

Let me preface this by saying I've not really got a football brain, but surely we need to stop rotating players week in week out trying to find a magic "formula" and just run with something till we've bedded down some kind of flow and intuition between players. The focus is too heavy on individual performance and not toward cohesiveness.

I've noticed there's a lot of miscommunication and no one seems to know "who's on first, what's on second" on many occasions (which makes the opposition look like Barca), and I wonder if that's because week in week out there's a different front third or different back 3? Even some of the world's great teams (that have a very talented bench) understand the importance of consistency, and they don't tear a team down and rebuild it week-in week-out on individual performances as this creates huge discontent.

Coaching week to week just feels like some kind of experiment, where if you have a good training week you're in! I say that because I've been fortunate to have been very close to being a professional sportsperson (not football), and I know that having a good week means absolute squat towards being selected in a first team or run on squad, and subbing 3 players on at once (on some occasions) is more about luck then planning.

Yeah, like I said I don't know? Was Robbo lucky at Newy and we latched on to the shiniest thing in the market, or has previous success made us all a little entitled and impatient for results? I say that with respect to those that I know have invested thousands in your dedication to the club.

I think Robbo galvanised that Newcastle team by playing to the underdog/poor tag and it worked cause the players knew it was the case so wanted to prove they could do a job despite the external ridicule.

Here at WSW he’s in charge of a big, well resourced club with a stacked team that really have no reason to be angry at anyone. He’s struggled to find a buy in and is out of his depth as a result.

There needs to be a minimum number of cameras or something for VAR. In any other league they would have reviewed the handball call with a reverse angle camera shot from the eastern stand. Instead we have Fox using two iPhones in the main stand to film the whole game so the only shot the refs had the players body was blocking the view. Not sure how that garbage was conclusive proof of a clear and obvious error but A-League refs etc...

Didn’t matter anyway. From the moment they scored in the 5th minute there was no way we were scoring twice, even if we played them twice. We chop and change our starting XI so much we’re not building any real combinations between players. The only way we got through them was to pump balls into the channels for players to run on to, only for the player to end up completely isolated or put in a trash cross. When we tried to play short players would look up and have no teammates within 20m. I can’t even figure out how we’re trying to play when we have the ball

I can’t see an easy way to turn things around. I’ve seen teams have a stacked XI and no depth, we’ve got heaps of depth and no starting XI.

less than a month ago too many draws was our only concern, jump fwd a few weeks and we are leaking goals left right and centre. Besides tonight the last 2 matches you would think scoring 2 goals you would have a high chance of victory but the once reliable defence is now gone.

Cox put in a good shift and Duke needs to start always but we should be sticking with a top 11 starting line up, Mutch might have to start as Baccus has lost his feet. If we don't get back to where we were before then this slump may become permenant.

If I had to summarise our season using a single GIF - it would be Troisi and Mutch kicking the **** out of each other going for the same ball

Closely followed by Mutch catching the ball in the middle of the field and him hitting a volley from the penalty spot and missing the whole six yard box.

Tranq, could I throw in a grenade and say Duke isn't ready yet. I think he's got a lot of "the second coming" pressure on him at the moment. The mans got a big heart, but he needs time otherwise he's gonna end up injured.

Mutch needs more game time, and KB needs to sit on the pine and eat a little humble pie for a while.

Absolutely atrocious. The boos at the end were well deserved

Wtf is this 3ATB ****? Its extremely one dimensional, as its entirely reliant on 2 players (the wingbacks) to carry the ball. We have no penetration up the middle what so ever. Gee I wonder how you defend that? And to make matters worse we can't get on the end of a cross (god forbid one of our 7 wingers moonlighting as strikers makes a back post run)

If only there were some sort of formation where we could use our natural wingers as wingers. And our strikers as actual strikers... Fu/ck me, this ones got me stumped

I'll give Robinson a game, but I already know how its going to turn out

    ^^^ this

The formation Robinson has us using isn't working. It depends on having two potent wing backs, bywhich we don't have. We have 3 young kids and DG. All decent players, but they aren't potent.

Also, playing 2 up front adds to our woes. We completely lose our midfield at times having a relatively flat 5 at the back and two players high up the pitch. This makes us vulnerable to counter attacks and impedes us when we go forward.

We need a formation that maximises our roster and has players with the better football nous on the field as long as possible (ie Dorrans, Muller, Cox, Mutch), then 2nd tier players (ie Troisi, Kamau, Gordon, Duke), and the best of the rest. Something like:

    4:5:1

Striker: Cox (Sub: Ibini / Duke)

    Wingers: Muller, Kamau (Sub: Troisi)

Midfield: Dorrans, Mutch, Baccus (Subs: Duke/Troisi/O'Doherty)

Back 4: Wilmering (or Russell), McGowan, Natta (or Tass), Gordon.

Last 3 games with McGowan at centre back we have conceded 7 goals,  prior to that we had conceded I think 6 and none from open play. That says it all !!!!!

get McGowan off the park and return Ziegler to the first team until Tass is back

Baccus prolly just cost himself a trip to the Olympics, his motivation will in the gutter

how about we offer Baccus up to western United as a swap for Max Burgess.

so now we will face up to Western United on Sunday with a different team on the park because we have to rest these fit professional soccer players and it looking like we will really get our arse smacked badly on current form.

the Italian and madman Albanian will reek havoc on our defence on tonight’s form.

I will repeat McGowan has to go , he is no good.

I get this is a joke but he's the only coach, other than red nut, who has extracted wins at this club. We've had a string of stupidity at this club and it's not solved by signing bald frauds who we're well passed it in 2019. I get players love CR but at this point I simply don't care if players are happy. We are all well aware the Robbo has some sort of allegiance to an agent (genuinely wtf?) and seems compelled to use the junk said agent sends his way, but at what point does he feel the embarrassment? And if JT is watching that performance and thinking to himself "Yep im sure the fans will be just fine with 20 more of those" then he can go lick a power socket.

Its amazing how an attack involving Duke, Cox, Troisi, Ibini, Yeboah, Kamau and Muller can only muster one shot on target in 90 mins. Regardless of how little or long they had on the field, that is so so poor

Yeah don't know stringer. KB for me throws of a bit of a golden boy waiting for the olympics vibe.

I think some time to reflect on his last 3 poor games may actually help him.

Mutch has played a total of what 45mins since joining. Not even enough time to fire up the muscle memory.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
