Brisbane Roar 2 - Central Coast Mariners 2

Brisbane turned around an early disadvantage before themselves suffering a late turn-around in this hard fought draw in Brisbane. The game was only 8 minutes old when the deadlock was broken by Michael McGlinchey. Massimo Murdocca was forced off with a knock, but the Roar were unable to get the sub onto the pitch before play resumed. A cross by Mile Sterjovski was intercepted by Jurman however only as far as McGlinchey who set himself with a good first touch then beat Michael Theo at his near post. Luke Brattan's direct free kick from a very long way out nearly caught the Mariners keeper off his line. Minutes before half-time Bozanic broke the Brisbane line and delivered a cut-back to McBreen who had his shot saved by Theo.

Besart Berisha was lucky to escape a send-off in the first half, with a yellow for a poor challenge followed by an off the ball incident that could have easily lead to a second, but he was on the pitch and he quickly made the Mariners pay. Broich twisted and turned to chip the ball into the near post, Berisha flicked the ball with his head to bring the Roar to 1-1. Berisha had his brace after Steffanuto galloped down the left flank and feed Berisha a ball that he tapped past Ryan to take the lead. 10 minutes later, with only 10 minutes on the clock, Daniel McBreen punished the Roar defense for leaving him unmarked and the 2-2 score that came from his goal was how the game ended.

    Wellington Phoenix 1 - Perth Glory 0

In a game that matched the 9v10 standings, it was a tough match, played in Auckland's Eden Park rather than the usual Wellington "Cake Tin" stadium. Paul Ifill was the main star for Wellington, blazing a shot wide early in the match. Perth were able to put a player through on goal but their finishing was poor. Paul Ifill cracked the match open with a pinpoint accurate cross over the head of the Perth defense that was buried by Jeremy Brockie.

There was not much action in the second half, the best chance of the half fell in the 88th minute for Ifill, who tricked his way past three Glory defenders before his curling shot just missed the far post. The change in scenery working for the Phoenix, pushing Perth Glory to the bottom of the table and heaping yet more pressure on Glory manager Ian Ferguson.

    Newcastle Jets 2 - Sydney FC 2

Sydney FC threw away 3 points in their visit to Newcastle, giving away two penalty goals to share a point each. Without Joel Griffiths due to this abuse of a referee, they needed Del Piero to step up. Poor Newcastle passing inside their own half cost them, Connor Chapman letting Del Piero in with an open sight of goal and the result was deadly. Rhyan Grant then allowed Newcastle to pull the goal back with a stupid challenge on Ryan Griffiths that the striker converted from the spot.

Sydney took only 10 minutes after half-time to regain the lead. Yet another defensive error allowed Del Piero time on the ball, he passed to Ali Abbas who struck a fierce shot, Birighitti only managed to palm the ball to the feet of Blake Powell who put the simple tap-in away. It wasn't the final twist in the tale however, with 2 minutes of regulation time left Emile Heskey nodded a corner back across the goal, a volley from Newcastle was blocked on the line by Terry McFlynn using his arm, the Sydney FC stalwart was dismissed from the field, Ryan Griffiths stepped up again to level the match and Vedran Janjetovic wasn't good enough to keep the shot out, and the game finished 2-2.

    Melbourne Victory 2 - Melbourne Heart 1

Heart surprised Nathan Coe early when David Williams struck a fierce shot that almost fell between his legs. Coe was called into action again with a top drawer save on a deflection coming from a cut-back. Andrew Redmayne stood tall up the other end as Rojas aimed a shot across the face of goal. The 28th minute saw the Heart defense fall asleep, Flores lofting the ball into acres of space behind the back 4, Archie Thompson running onto the ball and scoring a trademark placed finish before running off to taunt the Heart supporters. The woodwork then had it's own moment in the sun as it denied Billy Celeski for Victory followed by Gol Gol Mehbratu for Heart.

More poor defense from Heart in the second half, hauling Marcos Flores down off the ball in the box with Strebre Delovski having no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Mark Milligan stepped up to the spot and wrong footed Redmayne to double their advantage. David Williams made for a nervous finish for the Victory when he broke in on goal, rounded Nathan Coe and finished past several defenders on the line. The Victory were unable to provide a killer third goal, while Heart could not score an equaliser, and the game ended 2-1 to the Blue half of Melbourne.

Adelaide United 2 - Western Sydney Wanderers 4

A full report is listed here.

Youssouf Hersi scored a brace, with Mark Bridge and Mateo Poljak also getting past Eugene Galekovic as the Western Sydney Wanderers secured 3rd place in a high scoring affair in Adelaide. The first of two late first half goals was scored after a goalmouth scramble, Mooy's left footed volley was miraculously saved on the line by Eugene Galekovic, Hersi would not be denied and his low shot found the bottom far corner. Hersi ran at Cassio and delivered a cut-back to Mark bridge who struck a first time shot on his right foot from the penalty spot that Galekovic could not keep out. A chorus of booing echoed through Hindmarsh as the home team left the pitch.

Adelaide turned the ball over in midfield, Bridge had acres of space to pick a cross, Cassio was caught ball watching, the ball making it's way to Hersi a yard out and he couldn't miss with his head. Bruce Djite pulled a goal back for Adelaide after being allowed to turn by Iacopo La Rocca, his 20 yard shot on the turn skidded along the ground, past Covic and nestled into the far corner. It wasn't long before the score changed once more, this time in favour of the Wanderers. Confusion between Galekovic and Boogaard allowed Hersi to deliver a cross to the middle that Bridge missed by Poljak picked up. The defensive midfielder tricked Boogaard and smashed the ball home at the post for 4-1. Iain Ramsay scored a late consolation goal with an innovative side foot shot, too little too late to change the end result.

This leaves the ladder after round 19 at:

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
    • More like Neverlosin' the way they're going.
