  • Should Harry Kewell Come Back to Western Sydney? [Opinion]

    mack

Speculation mounts that Western Sydney is going to be rushed into the A-League to replace Gold Coast United.

Harry Kewell has a release clause written into his Melbourne Victory contract that allows him to terminate the contract after 1 season.

Meetings are ongoing between the league, Kewell, his management and Melbourne Victory management.

A rushed launch for Western Sydney will likely create a situation where substandard marketing, promotion and organisation will take place before the launch.

Is Harry Kewell part of the answer to this issue if the FFA choose to press ahead with a rushed launch?

    I categorically say yes.

Harry Kewell was born and bred in Western Sydney. He played junior football in Fairfield. As we have seen with Melbourne Victory, Kewell provides a big publicity boost, his return was hailed by all codes and interested was widespread.

Having performed this role for the FFA in the AFL state, I believe it is time for Harry to come back and do the same for Western Sydney. He still has the ability on the pitch, being the bright light in a very mediocre Melbourne Victory lineup. His value to Football goes far beyond his ability on the pitch. Harry Kewell ranks with the greats of Australian sport. Playing for Western Sydney in the A-League would give the team an exceptional introduction that no player barring perhaps Tim Cahill could provide.

If the FFA are serious about Western Sydney they need to make this happen.

    What are your thoughts?

    yeah i would say yes.

i dont really like him, but he would definetly bring people to the game, and actually did play some good football for the victory.

if we could get him and one more well known western sydney player like emerton or neill, i think that would be a great start.

Mix these with a couple of guys from the NSWPL, who should come cheap (3k rule) and grab some players from western sydney playing in 'smaller' leagues across the world, like Saun Rooney who is in indonesia, i think we should get a good mix.

i hope that the FFA dont go overboard bringing in 'big' names, as i dont want us to loose that underdogs, working class status

Would rather Cahill for the marquee spot or to a lesser extent Lucas Neill, I just feel Kewell has lost a bit of his impact at drawing a crowd or media attention compared to Cahill or Neill. Even so I woudn't complain if he did come to us.

If a random player can bring people to the game that otherwise wouldn't show up, i say **** them. That means that they will go together with players once they leave the club. I won't let player chants run in the stands even if it means screming at the top of my lugs, because I've seen other supporters eat their own **** after players leave for rivals etc. Only a couple of players will prove to be real deal and they won't luck any support once they earn it.

yeah i agree what your saying about supporters being loyal.

But if kewell means more people coming in, not necessarily sitting in the active support, but just normal seating, spending their money on gate tickets and programs, helping the club become profitable, or at least not bankrupt, i cant see any harm in that.

Ideally i would perfer cahill, as the media promotions and coverage would be massive, but i think he still has a couple of seasons left in england.

I'd prefer someone younger like Mile Jedinak no over the hill players and just sign a decent foriegn player as a marquee but have stated in his contract if he dose not preform out the door he gose with no compensation.

I can't see Neill bringing in the crowds. He is a defender. It will be Craig Moore marquee MkII.

    Plus, I don't like Neill ;)

I'd ****en love to see Harry every home game to be honest. Dude is an Australian legend. Who cares if he goes elsewhere after 1 season? You'd get to see the man himself do what he does best, and you'd be bound to see some brilliance on the pitch. Timmy Cahill would be better but less likely I think.

I say no. He's lost his aura now and would cost too much.

He's from Western Sydney but not seen as a blue collar personality in the slightest.

Wrong fit now and not the sort of personality I'd want at our club.

tim Cahill would be a huge signing for the club, he is widly reconised by people who are not generally football fans.

Absolutely MrUnited but surely he's at least a year or two from coming home?

Would be THE dream signing though.

Agreed. But I'll be there when he makes his debut :D

I rate Harry >> Cahill on the pitch though.

All I've seen Cahill do it ghost into the box and score a header every now and then, whereas Kewell can create chances and change the game.

Cahill is always at the end of a play, never in the build up to it. And that's where you want quality.

How about Schwartzer? One of Australia's most recognisable players, Western Sydney to boot.

I think a bigish name Australian player would be a huge boost to the club. Neill and Kewell would be great too. Cahill would be the gold mine but not likely to happen.

Schwarzer has derided this league before and categorically said he wouldn't play in it, wouldn't want a player like that.

Fair point, but he does score a LOT of goals with his head

personally i dont think harry will leave tardistan....would be great if he did but... Cahill would be a dream signing but he still has too many good years left in him to play in the epl... i think we will see alot of our boys coming back to play for us after the world cup when most retire from international duties.. i think we should be going for Alex "Can't Use His Right Foot" Brosque

Brosque just moved to Japan and is now in the Socceroos squad - reckon he'd move back to the A-League after that? He's not that old is he?

We should go after the likes of Brosque simply because of the angst it would cause SFC fans.

Haha true. Sign up Dwight Yorke, I say

Sorry to say it ain't gonna happen. Harry went to MV for a cut of the ticket sales. WSFC won't be able to compete on that score.

If this were to happen it would be massive. He is the perfect marquee for you guys. He represents everything West Sydney should be about. Raised by a working class family, went to a public school and was able to become a superstar. You couldn't have anyone more inspirational for the young kids of West Sydney.

My older brother stood right next to him at Stockies Wetherill Park a couple years ago when he was in Big W buying a few Wiis?

Except you can't get him to venture to his old stomping ground to conduct coaching clinics etc.

    Bring back Brett I say.

    Sydney FC can have Harry.

Haha could have been Harry's brother. Kat (my fiance) says him and Harry are mirror images of each other basically. And she works near stockies.

Or could have been Harry just chillin with his homies down the shops

He was definitely here during one of his injury recovery spells.

I'd like Harry and Tim personally ... Harry is probably more of an impact player now and with his injury prone nature he's best subbing off the bench.

In a recent 1 on 1 interview with Bozza which aired on Fox, Harry clearly indicated that he was not interested in returning to Western Sydney.

If he returns to the A-League, which he stated was more difficult than he had been led to believe by his previous management team, he will be playing wiith Victory. He added that his family enjoyed living in Melbourne and he would return there next season if a deal can be sorted out. .
