  • Supporter Forum #1 Retrospective.

    mack

Tonight the first of the FFA supporter forums was held at Mounties.

I, along with several other members of the forum attended the meeting.

Several high level members of the FFA including Ben Buckley were present and spoke and listened. Lyall Gorman, Kyle Paterson (who made a series of "Dad jokes" early on) and Mark Bosnich also attended, but sadly Mel McLaughlin did not. Bozza received rapturous applause throughout the night. He is very articulate, passionate, charismatic and this came through everything he spoke about.

From my view it was very successful. The results I discussed in our community round up were exceptionally well regarded and brought up not just by members of the forum.

There was discussion about club culture that meshed well with what I seen spoken about here, wanting to represent Western Sydney and to enable talent to have an outlet that doesn't involve going to Sydney FC or Central Coast to play professionally. Bozza spoke of how he believes this club is going to reflect the community of Western Sydney as it moves from mono-ethnic groups to a wider and more diverse group of people who begin to see themselves as part of Australia and have pride in being from Western Sydney.

Healing and building with the ex-NSL clubs was spoken highly and was applauded. Many Western Sydney coaches were named as potential leaders of the club.

There were two other issues with not a great deal of relation to the new club that came up. One was grass roots fees, and another was about the Training Compensation by a group of fans from a NSWPL club. After a heated discussion Bozza calmed tensions. The NSWPL supporters left the room afterward.

On the club colours, name and logo, what our community has discussed and prefers here was what was wanted in the forum. Red & Black colours, the name West or Western Sydney Wanderers was given rapturous applause. A handful of other suggestions included the colours of West Ham, Green & Gold those were not well received.

A show of hands was asked for those in favour of Parramatta stadium and almost to a person the audience raised their hands. The idea of ANZ was utterly rejected whenever it was raised. A long term vision for a football specific stadium was mentioned, with a member of the public having the idea of playing at Fairfield Showground.

Ben Buckley spoke of needing to build clubs from the bottom up, not the top down.

All in all it was a great night, there were a lot of good, sensible ideas and those ideas well supported were ones that the community here also agree and support.

I would suggest anyone who didn't attend tonight for whatever reason make the effort to go to the next meeting which is to be held at Parramatta.

I would like to thank Julyaugustreno for this effort making flyers that were handed out at the end of the night. He also spoke to Ben Buckley and also the FFA's Digital group on our behalf, and we have some details we will be following up with them.

I was there, but couldn't recognise anyone :(

It was a very productive night IMO. Every single person spoke with so much passion and love for the sport. Also if the "Chris" guy that spoke twice is on this forum, you sir are amazing.

Nah decided against it. Thought it might be taken as disrespectful by some. Still got an interview with the camera guy at the end though :D

Hope they present some form of timetable at the next forum.

e.g. when the Coach would be announced, then Membership would be open etc etc.

These are big milestones which people can look at and see tangible development.

You didn't recognise the huge group of people chanting 'West-ern Syd-ney Ole Ole Ole'? hahah.

Yeah that Chris guy was the first person who spoke who had any brains I thought. Stayed on topic and absolutely ****en nailed it with talking about the future of the club. Really good speaker too. I can't think on the run like that in front of that many people. Hence telling everyone to get ****ed and sitting down hahaha.

I think we need more flyers printed out for the next Supporters Forum so more can be handed out.

Is there a way to see if membership on this forum increases because of them?

Also, did anyone meet/see or get in contact with anyone from the Western Front? If so, did they have anything relevant to say?

I spoke to the digital guys also via my 442 contacts (who have worked with some of those guys in the past).

They are very approachable and actually asked my thoughts on the digital space and how they are going. He also said that A-League never had a twitter account last season and when they made it for this season they got like 2500 followers in 2 days or something. Some people at the FFA have no idea it seems.

Next forum at Parramatta on Tuesday. Get down there and hopefully more emphasis can be discussed on the club instead of fees and stuff like that.

Was definitely an interesting night and was good to meet a couple of you afterwards as well.

I think one word that can definitely sum up the night is passion.

    Passion for the west.

    Passion for the local clubs.

    Passion for acknowledging history.

And most importantly, passion for football.

You could easily see that this team can easily have the most passionate and supportive following in the A-League. Without a doubt. It's so clear that everyone in that room was dying for a club to truly represent the area, unlike any other club in the league.

There was huge support for "West/Western" in the name, being played out of Parramatta, red/black colours, and that all the local clubs be pathways to a professional career. All great stuff. If they want games at The Riff and at Campbelltown, they can be used for the "regional" games that the A-League does every now and then.

However, saying all that, you could also easily see that our biggest strength can also be our biggest weakness. Because everyone is so passionate there is a huge risk of infighting within the supporter base which could seriously hurt the club and the image of the club. Of course, there is always going to be some degree of infighting, but we have to make sure it stays somewhat under control and doesn't explode into anything which could put the club into the news for the wrong reasons; "Ethnic violence returns to soccer", "West Sydney club fans arrested", etc, etc. I'm sure that's the last thing that we all want.

Will definitely be there next Tuesday as well to see what others have to say and to build upon what was discussed last night. Very excited for what is to come.

(Btw, I'm going to ask a friend for help with illustrating that whole unicorn impaling smurf idea.... will keep you all updated)

    West Sydney Passion FC?

Sounds like a Lingerie Football League name....actually it is...Philadelphia Passion

That interview thing was annoying, I wanted them to ask me about Player Recruitment! lol

We did end up live tweeting it on TFS btw even though it's to late but the report is up: http://www.thefootba...rum-report.html

    Great night indeed.

Yeah I noticed the live tweeting. I only tweeted a couple of times and Brentan Speed retweeted mine about "resounding support for Bozza to be coach" haha

I only heard him yell out at the start. He got told to STFU and kept quiet after that haha. Amongst the 10 photos where I took that one up there ^^^, theres a photo of him being interviewed on camera (I think). Worrying what someone like that might've had to say. but anyway, the forum was good and mostly positive

So did you manage to effectively hand out the flyers? Did Buckly/Bozza/Gorman get one?

Did you use them all up?

Did people keep them or chuck them in the bin?

    Link to comment

My Dad got one on the way out but I wasn't handed one. It's sitting in the car at the moment haha, I already know about this forum etc though.

Yeah I handed them all out. Buckley got one, but Bozza left too quickly (he had to go to work... then he didn't show up for work cos I went home and watched his work on TV). I just stood at the door when it finished and gave them to people, a lot seemed keen. There's been a handful of new people posting today I think. I only saw one or two on the floor as well haha.

We gained 18 members yesterday which is about double the usual amount, and already today have 10, so it looks like it's had some effect on memberships. If the same is done for Parramatta, I should think it best to turn up slightly early and perhaps drop them onto the seats so people pick them up as they come in.

There's me and Julyaugstreno (red shirt, left hand raised) in the top left corner. I'm sitting next to him in the dark red shirt with my right hand raised, you can just about see my head). :diablo:

Yes I heard the chanting lol but how was I to know that would be you guys. If I come down for the next one I'll make a point to say hi.

Thanks for the run down ... I actually found my way to this forum because I heard about a new Western Sydney club in the news last week; had a poke around and found this forum, joined yesterday. I have to agree that with passion comes tension but as long as there is sound moderation here and a mutual understanding that respect = success - we're in for a promising future.

Agree mate. I would be happy to average 10,000 crowds next year. As long as Parra Stadium is absolutely buzzing with noise and passion. Create an atmosphere like they do in the Turkish league so visiting teams are left feeling uncomfortable in the hostile atmosphere.

I remember this Clint Eastwood movie called 'High Plains Drifter', where the folks of a small town decide to (on Eastwood's advice) paint the town red and put up a sign saying 'Welcome to Hell', to scare of some rogue cowboys who are coming for revenge. Kind of fits in perfectly with our situation. We are based in the wild west, our colours will more than likely have some red in it, and hopefully when visiting teams come to play they will feel like they have been to hell and back :)

Agree though need to respect other people's point of view even if we have differences.

Thats a good idea. I'd say I won't be there, but I can send you the PDF if you want to PM me your email address or something?

Or anyone else of course. If anyones got a colour printer and a guillotine or a bit of time on their hands to trim them down. If I decide to come down and I have a chance at work I'll do it myself, or if not, have them ready for the next one.

One thing I would make sure is that at any future events held at licensed venues the staff at the door have to all be on the same page. Had to register a complain with Mounties because one of the guys at the door didn't know what was going on and wouldn't let me and my dad in because we couldn't be signed in by a member.
