  • Ballack: The Truth. Why He Is Not Coming.

    Benched

Michael Ballack and his attempt at joining the Wanderers appear to be nothing more than an agent looking for a payday.

With the innuendo regarding Michael Ballack, not to mention the media reports and negativity in the football community towards any possible 'deal breaker' with Ballack, I'd like to set the record straight. The general information has come from the Wanderers organisation.

No formal discussions took place with Michael Ballack from our understanding of the situation.

I believe all media reports have been leaked by Ballack's agent.

Upon hearing of Ballack's apparent desire to play for Western Sydney Wanderers FC the club management undertook a series of steps to research and examine both Ballack personally, his level of fitness as a player and how the move would benefit the Wanderers as a club. This due diligence research included:

    • He is 36 years of age as we all know.
    • He has injured his knee in the last handful of seasons.
    • He has ankle problems.
    • He fractured his shin recently.
    • In the past 3 years he has played a total of 33 League and 13 Cup or European games.
    • His last actual match was on May 4th.
    • He has apparently not been training since then.
    • He has apparently not hired the services of a personal trainer to keep match fitness.
    • He has had some alleged acrimonious departures from not just the German National team but also several clubs.
    • He has been concentrating on broadcast duties recently.

The final piece of information that must be known is the reported figure requested by his agent.

For a 6 month contract, the total fee the club would have been looking at was $2.2 million.

It is sobering to see our club being fiscally responsible and thorough in their research. It hold us in great stead for the future.

We have invested in young quality locals talent, experienced imports and a Japanese maestro.

What we all should be doing is celebrating the signing of Shinji Ono, which is confirmed. A player who not only younger than Ballack, however played only last weekend.

Update - Ballack has retired. This event completely confirms the decision of the Wanderers staff to not proceed with signing Ballack on a deal.

I don't believe it benched it's just lyal and tony covering there own back sides as they never wanted Ballack in the first place so they up the figures from 1.6 mill to 2.2 million.

yeah there always seem to be 2 figures bandied about during any big negotiation, i think $2.2 million is gross and what the FFA would have to pay, and $1.6 million is net after tax and superannuation and is what ballack would take home.

wage + tax + agent fees.

Plus airfares a couple of times for a couple of people.

The Boss appeared very subdued at the airport this morning and was reluctant to discuss the happenings of Friday.

He was less than impressed that an employee or someone closely linked with the player / club had leaked the signing of Ono, before the story could be milked for all it was worth.

Well for starters Ballack has played 50+ games in the past 3 years. 35 for Bayer and atleast 15 for chelsea in 2010. Also Bosnich is claiming Ballack is fit. Dont know if he knows something others dont. To me this seems like to club is trying to let the fans down gently from the disapointment of not signing a susperstar.

His time at Chelsea 2-3 years ago was the last time he was really fit. Been absolutely rooted by injuries the past few years. Guy is broken, and a shadow of the player he used to be.

Seems strange when he ok'd it. They had a press release that day to announce Ono's signing.

After it had been leaked by an individual who coped a size 10 up his / her clackker.

Lyall was adamant on Thursday night at the Lions game that no announcements would be made on Friday.

I don't think he is referring to you Benched. All the media outlets were all but confirming Ono had signed with us all week.

    Not at all.

I was very precise in the language I used to ensure that I explained the boss man's backflip on this issue.

Lyall would appear to have had no option but to run with the story, once a member of the club's staff or a player agent, etc. had leaked / confirmed the story to the press.

    Truth.

Well if he didn't demand so much money then he might actually be still playing football! :unknw:

I think his retirement probably shows that he wasn't ever going to play in the middle east, the season had started in the US, Canada etc and we were pretty much the final hope for him. Once our club said no, that was it. Which is why, it's extremely difficult to believe the line of the FFA/Wanderers Management that he wanted so much money. It just makes no logical sense. I think there is more to this story but as I said I doubt we will ever find out.

But it also just as clearly shows that it wasn't simply about wanting to play football in Australia. If it was he would have been sorting this out when he was released in June - instead of only trying to sort something out once the seasons around the rest of the world had started. I think you are right in that Oz was the last option. But it doesn't necessarily follow that that means it wasn't about the money.

Like you say we'll probably never find out.

Prick was just looking for one last pay day!

Well done Gorman and the bosses upstairs for rejecting him!

It is hard to pick and choose the players from afar so things I think have worked out with Ono, who I felt was the best early on out of the two.

Long term the better deal I think as long as injuries stay away.

    Can't wait till Saturday.

    Ooooorrr...

he could be thinking "time to retire I guess"

agent: "but wait!! We can get you a multi million dollar deal for 6 months in a tin pot league in Australia. Weather is good, easy league, easy money"

Ballack: "sounds good I guess, see what you can do"

agent: "well it looks like the only team available is a new one, that has never played, and is owned by the tight as$ Australian federation. No deal apparently. No yacht for me :( "

Ballack: "meh. Saves me from packing and travelling all that way for nothing. You can borrow my yacht this weekend - but don't scratch it"

He wasnt wanted by popa guys. I heard it ftom the guy at the club. Thats the reason he didnt come, but i dont think he would do us any good apart from getting people to the game. Ono is mich better option.

For those of you who were following the Ballack story there is a final chapter coming in his retirement with a farewell game being played in Leipzig in June (as per this item on the DFB website). There is an intriguing note in the story (my German is a little rusty), where it says that he ended his active career in (the northern hemisphere) summer 2012. Now this is probably just a little bit of journalistic short hand from the DFB and its media folk, but perhaps...just perhaps...the decision to shut up the Ballack shop had been made before he and his agent were just playing that one last roll of the dice with the WSW bid.

Must admit that whilst I am grateful Shinji came in and Popa has moulded the team the way he wanted for the results they are now getting, the Deutschie fussball fan in me would've loved seeing Ballack in the black and red. Oh well...maybe Phillip Lam will be available to come in for Tarek Elrich :-P

I think most people see it that way now, and probably why Popa said no thanks. A last ditch effort to find a club but no big loss if nothing eventuated for him.
