Football Federation Australia (FFA) has yesterday announced that Western Sydney will be represented by a new club in the Hyundai A-League 2012/13 season.

From day one of its existence the new club will have a core focus on community engagement. The community will have a say in the culture, colours, name and logo of the new entity and we will explore a model that would allow for community ownership.

    My submission:

Hello. I am the administrator and owner of the westsydneyfootball.com website. It is the central hub for the newly launched western sydney a-league team's supporter groups.

As the owner of this website and a participant in the support of Western Sydney football since before the Sydney Rovers bid was created I have a perspective on the issues and situations that our supporters want this team to take. I shall outline several of them now. I do not claim these views as representative of the entire community, only that this is my view as I see it on the issues at hand.

The biggest and most important issue by far is the desire for fans to play at Parramatta Stadium. Not ANZ. Not for regular matches, not for derby matches, not for semi-finals if we make them. There has been constant and overwhelming support for Parramatta as the single home ground for this footall club. There have been at least three polls on this subject. The first had Parramatta or other small grounds like Campbelltown/Penrith getting some games 133 votes with a 76% majority.

The second had 80% for Parramatta Only. 20% were in favour of having 1 or 2 matches a season only at ANZ. ANZ as the only stadium received zero votes.

An ongoing poll in our new forum has followed the same trend. 83% of the votes are for Parramatta only. Only 16% want 1 or 2 derby matches at ANZ, with 0 votes for ANZ only.

The message is clear. #NoToANZ. We do not want to play a single match at this ground for reasons that are perfectly obvious to football supporters. It is expensive. It is just barely inside Western Sydney. It is hard to get to. There is no vibrant community to match that at Parramatta.

The next issue is the colours. The fans preferred colours are red and black. Many fans prefer a kit style of Red and Black vertical stripes. There have been very few alternative colours suggested or wanted.

The term "West" or "Western" being in the name is one issue that the Sydney Rovers consortium failed to listen to supporters on. Again, there is a clear majority on our forum for the use of West or Western in the name. This is not a team for people from the East. It is not for people from Manly. Or Cronulla. It is for the west. The name must reflect that.

The name of the team must be traditional without infringing on existing Australian sporting teams or major overseas teams that may have fans who do not want to support a team named for a rival overseas team. For example naming the club 'Rangers' would not be ideal.

The club should not be called "United" because that name is already used by a team who played in the NSL. We do not want to disrespect the ex-NSL/NSWPL teams and their fans because we want them to join us. For example, we would not want to call the team the "Saints" because the biggest club in Rugby League uses that as it's nickname, and also shares it with an AFL team.

Americanised names like animals or abstract emotions/events like 'Fury', 'Fire' or 'Storm' are not wanted.

Several suggestions which I believe fit this include Wanderers. Rovers. Athletic. Sporting Club or Football Club.

Other issues are those that many clubs face around the world:

    * Affordable pricing for memberships, general admission and families.

    * The desire for the club to move into a dedicated football specific stadium.

    * The introduction of an intelligent fan proactive CEO like Peter Wilt.

    * Ensuring that active support is not squashed by overzealous security but instead celebrated as providing the atmosphere that sets Football apart from other codes.

    * Community engagement is kept up constantly.

    Thank you for your time.

I can only imagine this being hijacked by Sydney FC fans saying "name them Unicorns FC" and spewing their bullshit rhetoric.

Hi all, I made similar comments about stadia. League matches at Parramatta, no to Olympic Park, but also recommended playing preseason friendlies at local football communities such as Marconi, Sydney United etc.

They talk about this club more than we do. They are worried about this situation, so they are trying to hide their fear by using stupid nicknames. Primary school tactics.

    Poor yuppie scum.

They call us "Unicorns" because they say we're mythical. That we don't 'exist'. They are the ones running scared. If we didn't exist why have they made as many posts about us in only two threads on their forum than we've got here about our entire community since it's launch? When we're out-singing them at at the SFS they'll know we exist. It won't be 'mythical' when we've won more competitions on the strength of our youth talent as they languish with lower crowds and supporters.

Hows about a unicorn tifo first derby?

The unicorn tiffo would be funny! In fact it could be a standard icon / mascot of the supporters group. lol

    I haven't either.

They might be doing the invites based on the area you live in.

Hopefully, we will get an email in the next day or so.
