  • FFA Vote on Name and Colours

    mack

Vote for new Sydney club name and colours.

Football fans can have a say in the name and colours to be chosen for the New Sydney Club representing Western Sydney in the Hyundai A-League for the 2012/13 season.

A public vote was launched today as the third stage of a community consultation process involving a large cross section of fans from all over the Western Sydney region.

So far the leading name contenders include Athletic, Wanderers, Strikers, Wolves and Rangers. Fans are also invited to suggest another name in this unique process.

The majority of those canvassed so far have asked for the colours Red, Black and White to be the basis of the team’s colours with three combinations of these also up for vote.

Fans are invited to lodge their preferences at www.footballaustralia.com.au/vote.

From inception, an undertaking was made to ensure community engagement is at core of the new club with a process taking place over the past three weeks seeing more than 1,000 fans have had their say at seven community forums in Mt Pritchard, Parramatta, Rooty Hill, Penrith, Castle Hill, Campbelltown and Bankstown.

Over 4,000 fans have already completed an online survey on the culture, values, name, colours, playing style, personnel and preferred home ground of the new club.

The forums and the online survey have shown a clear preference for the club’s name to include the geographical reference of West or Western.

Thats the thing though Cuncinho, do you really think 'economically' it will be much better. You are proposing that ANZ Stadium are willing to pay us handsomely to play there. I don't think the game there will attract anyone extra. I don't mind going there if it's your home game though.

Depends on who you listen to, but I've heard the difference could be huge. All existing HAL teams rent their grounds, beleive it or not Perth pay the highest per match because they get bent over on extra costs for the video screen. Anyways, current costs across the league are between $20K (Adelaide) and $80K (Perth), PER match. Obviously Parra Stadium is yet to strike a season-long deal, and as it's without a summer tennant it could be comparatively cheap if Buckley stays clear of the negotiations.

But compare that to ANZ who routinely PAY teams to play there ...... has happened with quite a few NRL teams, Sydney Olympic Park makes all their money via food, beverage and parking costs, so they're happy to pay the clubs that will bring in the punters. You could easily be looking at an extra $100K - $200K in the FFA's coffers for that ONE match alone, and that's not even factoring in the additional capacity. Obviously they'll recoup more in ticket sales if they pull even 35K to ANZ than a sell-out at Parra Stadium.

The western Sydney franchise is also set to announce a team name with a series of public forums settling on Athletic, Wanderers, Strikers, Wolves and Rangers as the leading contenders with the team colours tipped to be red, black and white.

Despite that, The World Game can reveal the nickname "Pride" is a preferred option for FFA, which 'Wanderers' also mentioned. Fans also stated United as a favourite at some of the forums, but that also doesn't appear to have made the short list.

    hm.

Correction to my above post, apparently Adelaide pay $25K per match, and Perth as high as $100K!! Listing here:

I hear what your saying, however, ANZ pay the Leagues clubs because they bring a larger crowd and sign on for the season or several games. I don't think the FFA will have such bargaining power. Further, I don't reckon the crowd will increase that much. Just have the first Derby at the SFS, if we do manage a 35000 crowd, well how awesome would that look and sound. A derby at ANZ I think should be a couple of years off. We want crowds of 50/60000 to make it a spectacle there.

BTW, PRIDE, how is that even being mentioned.

Yeah, read this a while ago.

They may have been considering "pride" at one point but it wasnt on the short list so they must have scraped the idea when it got shouted down at the forums (which it did) or didnt get any online votes.

Ray Richards was a member of the 1974 Socceroos and he is IMHO an onament to football in this country.

He was keen on Pride as he believed that it reflected the values of the residents of the region. He quickly dropped off when he realised the rank and file wanted a more traditional football name for the WSF club.

If you wan't to see just how passionate he is about Australian Football, go and view the feed from today's announcement of the Socceroos squad for our upcoming qualiriers against Oman & Japan.

Certainly at the fan forums, yes, and on here, and a few other online polls.

The only reason i can imagine they would go for PRIDE (and i dont think they would) is the ease of Trade marking the name in such a short space of time.

people seem to be venting their frustration at the name pride on twitter atm. i cant see what source it came from, probably, just because the sbs poll gave it as an option. regardless wanderers is topping it with around 60%

I know right. Surprised 'Pride' isn't trending on Twitter. The voice from ALL A-League fans has been heard.

It was from a throw away line in an sbs article on popa. Made no solid comments on "Pride" at all, I'm pretty sure (and certainly hope) this is all a storm in a tea cup

    Link to comment

It wasn't in the short list at all in the recent FFA survey. I don't think it will be named that.

Tom Smithies has confirmed that the FFA will not have Pride in the name at all.

    The World Game are wrong.

Twitter went crazy though from all fans around Australia. The power of Twitter conversation.

    Not surprising...

The power of gossip and group think :(

good to clear it up. do you have the link to whatever article post etc. which said that the name was west sydney pride, or was it just assumptions due to it being in the sbs poll

    Link to comment

I'm saying gossip created the hysteria, most people wouldnt have even read the article.

    Link to comment

It's hardly gossip when TWG reports it as being "the preferred" option. It came from this article.

" the nickname "Pride" is a preferred option for FFA, which 'Wanderers' also mentioned"

First of all the sentence makes no sense.

2nd, it doesn't say they will choose Pride, it says it's a preferred option - doesn't mean they'll run with it. What would be the point of having the 2nd poll without their preferred name on there? My bet is the hack who wrote this got someone on the end of the telephone line at FFA who said, "well round the office we liked Pride".

    Link to comment

surely they cant choose pride if it wasnt one of the 5 options on the most recent survey

    Link to comment

Don't fret, the FFA haven't tried to register the Trademark for "Pride". But they have for Wanderers, Athletic, Strikers and Wolves.

Here's The World Games poll results on preferred nicknames for WSF as at midnight 15/5/12.

Unfortunately the poll will run for another 20 years (until 2032) so it may be a while before we have a definitive result.

    Absolute folly I say.
