  • FOOTBALL COMES HOME: The Early Days of Western Sydney Wanderers FC

    Jowel

The article available at the download link below covers the early history of Western Sydney Wanderers FC, documenting the 7-month period from the announcement of the new club in April 2012 through to round 5 of the 2012/2013 A-league season in November 2012.

It follows the memorable journey of the birth and formation of the new club during its early period of existence - a time when the club and its fans were finding their feet.

The following topics are covered and provide a chronological account of the club’s early days:

    - Announcement of new Sydney club

    - Community engagement in club formation

    - Club details announced

    - Formation of supporters group (RBB)

    - Pre-season and further club announcements

    - The 2012/2013 season begins

    - References and further reading

The club was put together from scratch in just 186 days in time for the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Numerous milestones in the formation of the club were accomplished in such a short time frame, a testament to the passion of the club staff as well as the fans. The heartland of football in Australia was now finally represented in the national competition after years of waiting.

This article was prepared by me (Jowel). I hope it serves as a detailed record of the early history of the club which fans find an enjoyable read. Thanks also go to Mack for hosting this article on WestSydneyFootball.com.

The article can be downloaded here: FOOTBALL COMES HOME

It is an 8mb PDF file, 72 pages (A4 size) and over 30,000 words. It covers everything.

Awesome job Jowel! Imagine a hundred years from now when the club is massive and people want to know what things were like way back in 2012 where it all began. Now they'll have an excellent historic record to refer to. I found that thought even more exciting when I found the photo of the open training session was one of the ones I took on the day  :xbop:

There probably is enough footage around to make a 1hr doco :)

Damn! Does that mean I'll have to play myself? I was hoping they could get Sean Bean for the role...

    So when's the funeral? ;)

Anyway, awesome work Jowel. I had goosebumps reading a lot of that and it reminded me how much happened last year when we think back.

    So many memories.

Thanks for the feedback, people. Really appreciate it.

This article took a lot of time, research and energy. What started off as just an idea to write a small article about pre-season soon ballooned into the mammoth book that you have before you today.

    Damn I love this club.

Are you planning on continuing with the rest of the season for an updated version for our whole first 12 months? Or did you stop where you did to maintain your sanity after the mountain of work done so far?

Haha. Well my idea was just to put together a detailed summary of the early days. Those days are the ones I'll cherish most so I thought it important to make sure that a good record was made of them that all fans can read about.

I don't think I'll be doing the same for the rest of the season. It's a great idea though. Maybe someone else could give this a go? I was definately going insane by the end :)

    • Most such pardons would be less controversial than the one handed to Flynn. However, among those campaigning for a pardon is Joseph Maldonado-Passage. Better known as Joe Exotic, the zookeeper subject of hit Netflix documentary Tiger King, he received a 22-year sentence for trying to hire a hitman to kill a rival. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/26/trump-pardon-michael-flynn-rick-gates Free the Tiger King!!
    • Wow they are at the point of arrogance that they can just tell people they use public money to shore up votes and get away with it https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/berejiklian-backs-away-from-icac-funding-boost-but-not-pork-barrelling-20201126-p56ic4.html
    • She joined Blacktown Spartans during the NPL season and now the reports are that WSW and Victory have made offers as well as overseas clubs but that she would prefer to stay in Australia. I believe she would be back to Sydney now after participating in the FFA's training camp that was held in Adelaide this past week. I would suspect she'll have to make a decision pretty shortly about which club to join with the season a month away. Roberts also joined the Spartans after the season, we might have decided not to retain her again after 4 seasons with us, she only played 3 games last year. Holloway suffering an ACL injury at age 36 may have forced her into retirement and even if she didn't, signing her again would be a really risky choice for the club.
