  • Markus Babbel Is New Wanderers Coach

    mack

Western Sydney Wanderers have appointed Markus Babbel, confirming the new manager at a press conference this afternoon.

The former FC Luzern club manager will replace Josep Gombau, who was sacked by the club after finishing 7th in the 2017/18 A-League regular season.

Markus Babbel, 45, is one of the most high profile coaching appointments in the history of the A-League, having played 51 times for the German National team, with a glittering playing career that included winning the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich, the FA Cup & UEFA Cup again with Liverpool and the 1996 European Championship with Germany.

His coaching career took him to Stuttgart and then to Hertha Berlin, where he won the German 2nd Division title in 2010/11. His most recently appointment was at FC Luzern in Switzerland where he stablised the club back into the top half of the competition before leaving due mid-season after he decided to not renew his contract.

Babbel spoke at the press conference about wanting a new challenge at the club, "It wasn't a difficult decision to come to the Wanderers, I am looking forward to the challenge". Tomi Juric was mentioned as having sold the club to Babbel, comparing Wanderers supported with the much quieter people of Switzerland. Babell will return to Europe for a brief holiday with his family, before returning to take on the role heading into the pre-season.

Babbel saying the right things so far. Curious to see which marquee he brings in (if any) and how we line up in FFA Cup and beyond.

Starting with 2 sessions is a good start.

I reckon if with players he has atm and lining up as a 4-4-2, not sure if that is a diamond or flat formation.  If flat

    ...................Vedran

    Risdon...Hamill...Tongyik.....Llorente

    Fitzgerald....Roly....Baccus Snr....Bridge

    ........................Grozos

    .........................Riera

Tongyik and Tass currently fighting over the CB

We don't have a senior AM so Grozos and Tokich are fighting over that position.

Bridge, Kamau, Sotirio and Fitzgerald all vying for the wing positions along with Majok.

Backup striker should be Scott and Majok.

Anyone know which 4-4-2 formation Babbel favours?

Bridge should be nowhere near the starting XI nor the bench. His time is done. Last season, whether it was in protest over Gombau or sooking over Popa, he was shown up and well past it.

How dare people speak this way about the King

I was respectful to the monarchists but always thought it was a terrible idea to bring him back after Thailand.

Few clubs already playing pre season friendlies.

Do we have anything planned before the FFAcup fixture?

We are playing pre-season friendlies, they just aren't advertised.

I just assumed we were playing pre-season with the FFA cup game just around the corner

Watched the interview with Babbel. I'm excited.

Definitely saying the right things. But now he has to get the players on board and to show the desire and hard work he mentions multiple times.

Apparently we've already played one last week according to McWanderer, do you know who we played and why are they being kept secret?

Probably not to pay for security guards.

I’m guessing thats a lot to do with it, I doubt the club need the hassle of organising security or having another flare incident, to put out

Not every preseason needs to be open to the public. Less pressure on all involved to just have a hit out and work on what needs to be worked on.

It was different in S1 where they needed the games to garner support from the public and build anticipation. Now, its business as usual like all football clubs. Because of restrictions and security costs, its just simpler and cheaper for the club to play secret games.

    Especially this early in preseason.

CEO made it clear at the recent fan forum, that the club would unfortunately need to continue with the practice of conducting BCD trial games.

Of course that isn't their preferred option, but, if the club is going to incur fines & potential financial losses from making the games open to our supporter base, I suppose they don't have many other options.

The NPL clubs which would like to host us in pre-season trials & potentially generate a few thousand dollars, are the big losers.

PS: We've played Manly & Sydney Olympic thus far. No player has been given more than 45 mins in either game

Assume win against Manly and loss to Olympic.

So here's my questions for the last 2 weeks, are there player signings about to be announced, including visa,  and in what positions?

From memory we lost 3-2 vs Manly and won 6-3 vs Olympic.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
