  • Markus Babbel Is New Wanderers Coach

    mack

Western Sydney Wanderers have appointed Markus Babbel, confirming the new manager at a press conference this afternoon.

The former FC Luzern club manager will replace Josep Gombau, who was sacked by the club after finishing 7th in the 2017/18 A-League regular season.

Markus Babbel, 45, is one of the most high profile coaching appointments in the history of the A-League, having played 51 times for the German National team, with a glittering playing career that included winning the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich, the FA Cup & UEFA Cup again with Liverpool and the 1996 European Championship with Germany.

His coaching career took him to Stuttgart and then to Hertha Berlin, where he won the German 2nd Division title in 2010/11. His most recently appointment was at FC Luzern in Switzerland where he stablised the club back into the top half of the competition before leaving due mid-season after he decided to not renew his contract.

Babbel spoke at the press conference about wanting a new challenge at the club, "It wasn't a difficult decision to come to the Wanderers, I am looking forward to the challenge". Tomi Juric was mentioned as having sold the club to Babbel, comparing Wanderers supported with the much quieter people of Switzerland. Babell will return to Europe for a brief holiday with his family, before returning to take on the role heading into the pre-season.

CEO made it clear at the recent fan forum, that the club would unfortunately need to continue with the practice of conducting BCD trial games.

Of course that isn't their preferred option, but, if the club is going to incur fines & potential financial losses from making the games open to our supporter base, I suppose they don't have many other options.

The NPL clubs which would like to host us in pre-season trials & potentially generate a few thousand dollars, are the big losers.

PS: We've played Manly & Sydney Olympic thus far. No player has been given more than 45 mins in either game

Fair enough that the club needs to go down the path of BCD in the current circumstances, but I think they could at least have a summing up of the trial results afterwards, eg as Perth and Brisbane have done this week on their social media.

Keeping the clubs supporters in the dark re the teams progress so far is not a good thing in my opinion.

Poor communication (or lack of) follows the clubs general MO under JT

Footballers are on holidays atm. Signings will be done in due course. Compared to other teams like SFC and MV who have lost a lot of players, we're doing ok.

SFC are at risk of losing to Rockdale.

SFC still have a decent core of Australian signings. If they nail their 4 foreign spots they will (unfortunately) be fine (maybe not in time for FFA cup.

be interesting to see how well their scouting works for a second time.

last season they had 4 foreign spots nailed

We really need Roly to fire this year

I’m not so sure, without the 3 marquees in the team it effectively means they need to rejig policy. Do they still go with a stacked first XI or do they recruit more evenly across the 26 player squad?

Not so straightforward as recruit foreigners = success

They will stack the first XI again

largely for them it is now about the foreigners they didn’t lose much in the way of Australian players from the last year, they still have same core of former and fringe Socceroos

    They have

    Assuming 4 2 3 1

GK doesn’t change (accepting he’s a bit crap)

    Defence: Zullo, Grant and Wilkinson

    so need a foreign CB

    defensive midfield:

ONeil and Brilantte (assuming the referees continue to let the rotational foul no change there

Attack: Broaque, Ninkovic  remain so need to replace Adrian and Bobo

they need a couple of bench players to replace Simon and Carney

Anyone know the result of our friendly with Brisbane roar who we supposedly played today?

yes, you can tell the World Cup is over as I’m hanging out to hear some friendly results.

    Game didn't proceed.

Roar apparently called it off due to illness in their squad. I noticed that their NPL squad were also playing Friday night, so they couldn't call upon those lads to fill the gaps.

In regard to our friendly game on Tuesday night against a QPL club (5 - 2 win), the starting 11 played about 60 mins & lead 3 - 1 when substituted.

I saw a snippet in a News Ltd headline that we were supposed to play Gold Coast but it was cancelled - any idea who we did play? If Roar was also a no-go, it's a bit of a jumbled pre so far.

Very cloak and dagger stuff from the people's club at the moment. You get more candour from that orange mouth in the White House than this mob

Preparations for an effective Blitzkrieg are best made in secret perhaps?  Hopefully our tactics will take everyone by surprise and we will storm the league!
